4 ifs University College Alumni Fund Annual Report 2012

Heading in here

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the first-ever report on theactivities of ifs University College Alumni Fund.

2011 can be considered a year of significant achievement.

Following the grant of taught degree-awarding powers in 2010, making us the only professional body in the UKwith the right to award its own degrees, all our higher professional education programmes have now been fullyvalidated as ifs University College awards. In September we commenced the delivery of our first-ever full-timedegree course, the BSc (Hons) in Banking Practice & Management.

The 40 students who have joined this course have represented a whole new challenge for ifs University College. Incontrast to our many years of experience delivering distance-learning professional qualifications to those alreadyworking in the industry, we now have, for the first time, students, many of whom have come to us straight fromschool, attending our City campus every day of the week. This has required us to grow our academic community, toinvest heavily in enhancements to the teaching resources and facilities available and to put many new mechanismsin place to provide much greater levels of support to these students with their pastoral needs, their study and theirpreparations for successful careers in financial services.

This challenge has been taken on concurrently with our ongoing commitment to providing those already in theindustry with professional qualifications of the highest standards and relevance. We continue to review and enhance our programmes to ensure they meet the development needs of the industry and those working withinit. Again we have invested heavily in improving the student experience through constant enhancements to learning resources, both physical and virtual, and by strengthening the study support available.

Welcome and thank you

In 2012 we will be offering a new degree, the BSc in Finance and Accounting for Financial Services, on both afull-time and distance-learning basis. Applications for full-time study at ifs University College commencing inSeptember 2012 have more than doubled in contrast to a drop of 8.7% in UCAS applications overall. InSeptember 2012 we will also be launching the first full-time Masters programme to be taught exclusively at ourCity campus and we now have ‘Tier 4’ status from the UK Border Agency which enables us to recruitinternational students. Further development is underway to launch new programmes which will continue tobroaden our offering.

All of the above is integral to our goal to support the industry in developing a highly skilled and competentworkforce and in doing so contribute to a sustainable and positive future for the sector. None of this would bepossible, however, without the support in turn from the industry itself and those working within it. The AlumniFund plays an important role in enabling existing professionals to contribute to this vision.

I would like to personally thank the donors who have supported the Fund. This report recognises the collectiveimpact of donations and shows how, regardless of size, they have helped improve the overall student learningexperience.

By supporting the Fund you are doing something really worthwhile. Your continued commitment helps to ensurethat finances are not an obstacle for talented students, and equips them with the skills and knowledge to helpthem excel in their future careers.

Thank you once again for your support, without which the Alumni Fund would not be able tomake such an impact.

Martin Day Vice Principal Professional Higher Education

ifs University College is committed to ensuring thattalented students from all backgrounds are given thebest opportunities to pursue careers in banking andfinance.

The Alumni Fund was established in 2010 to offerwider access to its programmes and to allow alumnian opportunity to give something back by investing inthe next generation of financial services professionals.

The increasing cost of higher education can deterstudents from enhancing their skills, knowledge andemployability through further study once they leaveschool. As a result, many of these students are missingout on the opportunity to realise their full potential.

The Alumni Fund provides assistance by awardingscholarships to help students with education andmaintenance costs, as well as providing funding forteaching resources essential for studies.

The Fund aims to raise £100,000 in donations andpledges by 2015. It is open to regular donations viadirect debit and one-off pledges from alumni andthose working in financial services who wish to investin the success of others in the industry.

Scholar profiles

Alois Angelo (pictured) and Connor Fitzpatrick are full-time students in their first year studying theBSc in Banking Practice and Management and arerecipients of £1,000 Alumni Scholarships fromthe Alumni Fund. In this section they explain whythey chose to study with ifs University College andwhat difference the scholarship award has made.

Page 12: Alumni fund donor report

Alois Angelo studied both the Certificate and Diploma in Financial Studies at HarrowCollege. He is currently living at home in South Harrow from where he commutes to hislectures.

Why did you decide to study with ifs University College?

Positions on graduate schemes are intensely competitive, especially in the financial services sector. In order to be successful you need to stand out from the crowd by having a recognised qualification and relevant experience. I knowthat studying for my degree with ifs University College will give me the right knowledge, practical skills and understandingto keep me one step ahead of the competition when I graduate.

What aspects of the course are you enjoying the most?

The course has a logical flow with interlinking modules; the more challenging elements can be understood with support from the lecturers and the first-class learning resources that we have access to. I am really enjoying the ‘Customers and their Needs’ module; my interest and curiosity in the subject seems to grow with my knowledge of thefinance industry. The more I learn the more I am excited about a career in financial services.

What difference has being awarded a scholarship made?

It has been a true privilege to be awarded the Alumni Scholarship. The award has enabled me to focus all my attention onmy studies. I have been able to purchase a netbook to help me with my course as well as a range of textbooks. In additionI have been able to explore internships and other opportunities more freely as I am now able to cover my travel costs.

What does receiving a scholarshipmean to you?

Receiving a scholarship has motivated me further. Iam determined to achieve my goals and gain aqualification that will unlock my true potential. Inaddition to this, the scholarship has reduced the financial pressure and the stress so I can concentrate on my studies more.

Page 13: Alumni fund donor report

Connor Fitzpatrick studied the Certificate and Diploma in Financial Studies at FranklinCollege in Grimsby. He moved to London at the start of his degree and is currently living in student halls.

Why did you decide to study with ifs University College?

I’ve always had an interest in the financial services industry. After studying ifs University College’s Award in PersonalFinance I decided that I wanted a career in the industry. It seemed the natural step to come here and continue with my studies.

What aspects of the course are you enjoying the most?

I am enjoying all the modules, especially Financial Markets and Risk. I find it fascinating learning about the monetary andfinancial system.

I’m also really enjoying all the networking opportunities and events that we get invited to. This is really valuable as weget to meet alumni and hear from industry leaders from all the major banks.

What difference has being awardeda scholarship made?

The scholarship has made a huge difference to me. I’mliving away from home during term time which meansI have to cover my rent and living expenses as well asbooks and study materials. The scholarship hasenabled me to concentrate on my studies in the firstyear without the extra stress and pressure of finding apart-time job.

What does receiving a scholarshipmean to you?

It makes life so much easier, not only for the reasonsI’ve outlined above, but also the fact that I’m livingaway from home and standing on my own two feet.My grades have been really good so far, I think this is directly attributable to the fact that I’ve had more timeto study and I feel settled in London.
