GUHSAA Museum open Mondays 9:00 – 1:00 or by appointment call 916-813-2850 Dear Pacers,
Grant High School is out for the summer. Remember when? Leora and I awarded 21 scholarships (Page 8) at graduation on June 10th; the committee had a hard time selecting the recipients. The applicants were all so well qualified, talented and certainly in need of financial help.
Once again I thank you for voting. Approximately 35% of our members cast their ballots. We had the honor of sponsoring our first annual film festival, a fund raiser to assist the producers of the award winning “Give Us This Day” documentary about the 2012 Grant football season in financing their final editing so they can qualify for public distribution. They are well on their way. We will let you know when the DVD is available for distribution. We called it our first annual because with the new ARTS Academy at Grant, we hope to feature student generated films in the future. Our thanks to Pam Kirkwood Bowens ’75 for finally getting the Grant Union High School Alumni Association Facebook page up and running. She is getting a lot of responses on the site. If you want to join, just request Pam to make you a friend.
Please note that the date for our annual George Wright Memorial Organ Concert has been moved up from our usual November date to October 19 (Page 11). Frank and Sondra Fuson ‘54 are both dealing with serious health issues and can use all the support we can give them.
We have two big reunions coming up. Bev Kennedy ’55 and Deb Johnson ’55 are heading up a committee for the 1950-1959 Reunion to be held September 12 & 13, 2014 to be held at the Crown Plaza Hotel. If you know of any Grant Alumni from that era, please help them spread the word. Also Norte Del Rio Alumni are putting together a Mega Norte Del Rio All School Reunion the weekend of July 18-20. This is a tremendous undertaking! Information can be found in the last issue of this Newsletter, on both the Norte and Grant Facebook pages and on our website guhsaa.org. They are also reaching out to find Norte staff members. If you know any of the above, we encourage you to also help them spread the word.
Check out Kelvin Lee Ed.D ‘64’s article updating progress for the Grant Health & Sports Academy. When completed, it will be of benefit to the entire community in addition to Grant students.
For some time we have been trying to get grads from the 1960s, 1970’s and beyond to support the Association. Recent events
have made it more essential than ever. Of our 15 board members, 6 are experiencing serious health issues with themselves and/or their spouse. In addition, our newest board member, Walt Tidwell ’58 is moving to Arizona. It is imperative that we find volunteers that are willing to step up and fill these positions as they develop. Pam Kirkwood Bowens ’75 is in line to replace Walt. But as these resignations occur, we need to be prepared with potential replacements. We are considering forming a search committee composed of alumni from the 60’s and 70’s to assist us in finding willing volunteers. If you would be willing to serve on this committee or as a board member, call 916-813-2850 or 916-368-2438. The board meets every other odd month and is not a very time consuming position. If you ever considered serving, now is the time to step forward!

There were 493 ballots cast for the following candidates: Pam Bowen ‘75, Sondra Swart Fuson ‘55, Johnnie Matranga ‘49, Jeanette Providence ‘73, Chuck Reade ’49, and Walt Tidwell ‘58. The GUHSAA thanks all the candidates for running for the Board and their willingness to work for the graduates and students of Grant Union High School. The elected Board Members for the term that runs from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2017 are: Sondra Swart Fuson, Johnnie Matranga, Jeanette Providence, Chuck Reade and Walt Tidwell.
“Give Us This Day’ premiered at Grant
In 2012 independent filmmakers D.L. Stern, Adam Stern and Milton Boyd spent a year filming a documentary on the Grant Football team. Unfortunately, 2012 turned out to be Grant’s worst season and they endured tragedy as well. The inspiring story of how they dealt with these challenges is told in “Give Us This Day”. The film won best documentary honors at the Sacramento International Film Festival in April. The film is currently designated for film festivals and needs technical finishing touches before it can be shown to the general public. Since it was shown on the Delta King to sold out houses, many Grant supporters were unable to see the film. The filmmakers were seeking funds to complete the editing process which is quite expensive. They signed up for Kickstart.com with a goal of reaching $15,000. Since they needed to reach that goal in order to receive the funds, and since they were receiving so many requests to see the film, they reached out to GUHSAA to sponsor a film festival at Grant as fund raiser to help them reach their goal within their timeline. We had a very short two weeks to pull it all together. We printed and distributed posters, posted information on our website and Pam Bowens got our Facebook page up and running. We had 3 showings in the auditorium on Friday night May 16th, Sunday afternoon and evening May 18th. The film was well received and we did our part to help the filmmakers reach their goal. Once the editing is completed, the plan is to release it on DVD. We’ll keep you posted on the progress. The GUHSAA Newsletter is the official

Pacer Profile – Leora Kaufer Matranga ‘52
Life happens when you are planning something else. At least that was true for Leora
“Billee” Kaufer’52. Her childhood dream was to be a teacher like her 3rd
-4th
Grade teacher
Margie Clark Lee at North Sacramento Elementary School where she graduated in the last 8th
grade class in 1948. At the end of her sophomore year at Grant she met Johnnie Matranga who
was attending Grant Tech across the street. They were married during her senior year and
becoming a mother became her first teaching job for daughter Cyndi and son Rocky. She took
night classes at Grant Tech and was active in Noralto PTA and was a Girl Scout leader. She
received a PTA Honorary Life Membership from Las Palmas PTA. Finally when Rocky started 4th
grade she enrolled at American River College and then on to Sac State to earn her teaching
credential.
While she was attending college, Johnnie got the water ski bug and the family became a ski family. They all
skied in the ski shows for the Sacramento Water Ski Club. Cyndi was the first to win a national title. When they went to
a tournament they contributed four judges, three drivers and two scorers. Rocky became sought after as an announcer.
It was truly a team effort. Johnnie and Leora both served on the Western Regional Council. Johnnie served as Regional
Vice President and Leora edited the Western Region Tournament Guide for 17 years. When Cyndi attended Sac State,
she and Johnnie started a water ski program that eventually grew to become the Sac State Aquatic Center. Johnnie and
Rocky also won many titles and Johnnie received an Award of Distinction from the Water Ski Hall of Fame. As a Senior
Judge, Leora became one of the first women selected to judge a National Tournament and went on to judge many more.
She also conducted judge’s clinics to train upcoming judges.
In a quest for family history she joined Root Cellar Genealogy Club where she took classes, served as president,
volunteered at the club library and led tours to the LDS Library in Salt Lake City. She found a long lost cousin, traced her
mother’s family to Puritan roots 1632 Massachusetts and became a member of the Daughters of the American
Revolution. She connected with German cousins and traveled to East Germany where they took her to visit her
grandparent’s village and was in Berlin weeks before the wall came down.
Leora began teaching 5th
grade in 1969 for the Rio Linda School District at Larchmont School, followed by a stint
at Orchard School. In 1976 she became the district Grant Writer and Public Information Officer. In 1980 she returned to
the Classroom at Oakdale School. She spent two summers as a Fellow of the Northern California Math Project at UCD
and was part of the “Equals Project” at the Lawrence Hall of Science in Berkeley. She teamed with a primary colleague to
win a grant for a “Model Hands-on Math Classroom” and trained other teachers and parents. In 1991 she received the
Sacramento County “Outstanding Math Teacher” Award. This led to working three years as the District Math
Coordinator. She had nine schools where she presented staff development demonstration lessons to all grade levels K-
6. District funding cutbacks ended the program and she taught 5th
grade at Holmes School. She ended her career where
it began, working as math specialist at Larchmont School. She retired in 1994 and spent several years working as a tutor
in private schools for the district.
Truly a “Pacer for Life” she chaired her class reunion committee for many years and made wonderful lifelong
friends. In 1997 Johnnie was elected to the Grant Alumni Association Board of Directors. She went along to the meetings
and was enticed by Al Davis ’43 to volunteer at the GUHSAA Museum with the promise of learning how to use the
computer. She volunteered to edit the GUHSAA Newsletter following the retirement of Faye Gould Wiese ‘39. The
following year she was elected to the board. She arranged a meeting to recruit volunteers for the museum and
spearheaded the Grant Grad Photo Display Project. The computer program was designed by Al Davis and classmate
Jerry Arthur built the wall frames. Another classmate Lillian Catledge Weisenburger teamed up with Leora to create the
displays, scan all of the yearbooks and preserve them on CD’s. Sixteen years later all of the classes from Grant and Norte
Del Rio are on display. When Al Davis retired as museum director she took his place. Through her leadership, there are
displays at the museum in the outside windows featuring “Grant High School 1932-1942 – The Purple and Gold Years”, a
photo display of the Scholarship Recipients, and a “Bring Back the Band” display. Inside the museum is the “History of
the Grant Organ”, the World War II project at Grant (one of 5 in the Nation) to train mechanics to repair airplanes, the
history of Grant Technical College, and the 2008 State Football Champions along with much more memorabilia.
Now with the staff of 8 at the museum beginning to age out, she is ready to recruit and train younger alumni
volunteers to continue to preserve Grant Union High School’s rich history.

2014 Scholarship Awards – by Jeanne Perry Benvenuti ‘52
On May 16, 2014, the Alumni Association Scholarship Committee met to select the scholarships to be awarded for 2014. The Committee received 51 student applications and from those awarded ten $4,000, two $2,500, and nine $2,000 scholarships. The recipients were announced at graduation, June 10, by Association President Johnnie Matranga and Leora Matranga, Association Secretary.
Those graduates receiving $4,000 awards were Mai Cha, 2014 Valedictorian, who will attend CSU, East Bay, and major in History; Student Body Vice President Valerie Cha, who will major in Human Development at U.C. Davis; Anna Cheng, who will study Cognitive Science at U.C. Berkeley; Jennyann Gallo, who will major in Sociology at UCLA; Suyash Pandey, who will study International Relations at U.C San Diego; Luz Rosales, who will major in Biology at UCLA; Kristy Vang (undeclared), who will attend UC Davis; Callie Vue, who is interested in Civil Engineering and will attend UC Berkeley; Suzanne Vue, who will major in Film Studies at UC Davis; and Student Body President Mai Chiang Xiong, who will attend CSU, Sacramento as a Business major. Two graduates received $2,500 scholarships and will attend American River College (ARC)---Lourdes Alvarez, whose major is Psychology, and Claudia Cuevas, who will major in Liberal Studies. These scholarships were funded by Perry Flicker, who graduated from Grant in 1934.
Five graduates received $2,000 scholarships that were also funded by or in memory of individuals or by Alumni Association groups. -- Two Jane and Darrow Fund Scholarships from Ralph Livingstone scholarships were given in memory of Ralph’s

Those serving on the Scholarship Committee were Beverly Kennedy and Jeanne Benvenuti, co-chairs, Leora Matranga, Rhonda Baber, Walt Tidwell, and Grant teacher Jeanette Providence. Jeanette led a well-attended meeting for recipients and their families on June 11 at the school library. She and Association Treasurer LeRoy Perry reminded the graduates of the details pertinent to receiving their scholarship checks. The students learned more about the scholarship process from Beverly and were encouraged by Johnnie and Leora and others of the Committee to join the Alumni Association. The highlight of the meeting was an inspiring send-off by Jeanette regarding what the graduates can expect as they move on to their college careers and what will be expected of them. The Association congratulates the 2014 scholars and is grateful to those who have assisted in funding the scholarships for these outstanding graduates.

TEN CLASS REUNION UPDATE
1950 – 1959
September 12 & 13, 2014 Crowne Plaza Hotel, 5321 Date Ave., Sacramento
The Save the Date flyer we mailed out in March went to a few wrong addresses
which we corrected in the Alumni data base, then sent out new flyers. We’re
hoping for a good turnout, the room holds close to 500. Call a friend or two
from your class and make it a party!
The Class of 1958 headed by Arleen Allen Clavet and her crew of Joyce Myers
Johnson and Barbara Nelson Kennedy have the Friday night mixer plans to be held in the Terrace Room well
in hand. From 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. a no host bar and hors d’oeuvres will be available and there will be music to
reminisce by. Dress is casual, but go all out if you feel like it. You might even see a football jersey or three!
Also, don’t forget we have the Special Room Rate of $89.00 for two for the night, which includes breakfast the
next day! Lunch in the Ballroom on Saturday is $45.00 per person, including tax and gratuity. Registration
begins at 11:00 and lunch will be served at 1:00. Stan Shaver ’55 will provide the rock and roll and other 50s
appropriate background music for the luncheon.
For those opting to go to the home football game Friday night, Grant is playing Bullard of Fresno – Jr. Varsity at
5:00 and Varsity at 7:15. Alumni usually sit in the section right of the announcer’s booth. If there is enough
interest, we can arrange for a Sunday tour of the school and to see the Sports Health Academy weight room,
the new Promenade and the Alumni Museum.
Just In: One of our speakers for the luncheon will be Grant Head Football Coach Mike Alberghini. Mike and
his wife Mary have accepted the invitation to be our guests and we know they will be well received. We are
awaiting confirmation of two other speakers and hope to have that information soon. Also invited will be
several teachers from the ‘50s. Don’t worry, the program will not be long or boring and there will be plenty of
time to visit. We have the room until 5:00 p.m. and we’ll have all this information and more in the invitation
going out in mid-July. Deadline for reservations will be August 15, to give us time to make sure all nametags
are made and individual information on attendees are typed and printed for the program.

Sacramento, has been invited to participate in the 2015 National Independence Day Parade™ on

MEMORABILIA SOUGHT FROM 1980’S, 1990’S, 2000’S
The Alumni Association is looking for memorabilia to be loaned or donated, for display in the
museum. Items used in displays for earlier classes include sports trophies, game balls, and other sports
related keepsakes, including items from the State Championship football team, cheer outfits, pompoms,
etc. But we are also looking for other types of memorabilia such as photographs, awards, homecoming items, or anything you believe might be of interest to others who come to the museum to
learn about the history of Grant High School.
We are planning to update our displays and would welcome the chance include these missing classes
from the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. We’re also looking for volunteers to help us in the operation of your Alumni Association. It’s a great way to continue the long tradition of “Pacer Pride”. Volunteering can
involve as much or as little of your time as you can spare. We normally work on Mondays except
holidays. It’s also a great way to keep
current on your computer skills or learn new ones. If you’ve always wanted to do something artistic we
have a need for assistance with new displays in the museum. So if you are interested in being a volunteer
or know someone who is, or you have memorabilia that you would like to donate or loan, call us at 916-
813-2850. We can’t wait to talk to you.
Grant adds new ARTS Academy Grant High is adding a new Academy to begin for sophomores in the 2014-2015 school year. A. R. T. S. stands for Academy of Rhythm, Technology, and Stage Production. This mission of this Academy is
to provide opportunities for students to gain awareness of careers related to the arts. The academy will
establish an environment where creativity is evidenced daily in varying educational settings. The career
focus will include musicianship, dance, theater, design, production, and applied art, all of which
will incorporate the effective usage of technology. The Lead Teacher for the A. R. T. S. is
Jonathan Young.
GUHSAA Facebook Page The Alumni Association now has our own Facebook page. If an easy way to stay connected with your
fellow alumni and up-to-date with what’s going on with the Alumni Association. We update it on a regular
basis and hope to add you to our group. You can find us by entering Grant Union High School Alumni (Sacramento, CA) in your Facebook search bar and then ask to join. It’s that simple. If you have
questions, give us a call at (916) 704-0353.

GRANT UNION HIGH SCHOOL
HEALTH AND WELLNESS ACADEMY FITNESS CENTER PHASE II STATUS UPDATE
BY KELVIN K. LEE ED.D ‘64
Since successfully completing the first phase of the Grant Union High School Health
and Wellness Fitness Center a continuing effort has been underway to fund and complete
the second phase of the facility. In addition to providing a renovated indoor fitness center
(Phase I) that opened in January of 2012, Phase II will add and outdoor plaza and stage,
male and female changing and shower rooms, air conditioning to the indoor fitness
center, upgrades to the parking area and beautification the entire complex. It is
estimated that the cost to complete phase II would about $1.4 million. The
Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency has reviewed the success of the
combined efforts of the community, high school and district to complete Phase I
of the fitness center and is providing an incentive grant of $400,000 to complete
Phase II.
The Grant Union High School Health Sports Academy Fund Development Committee has actively been
working to achieve the completion Phase II to the fitness center. During the greater part of the 2012-13 school
year the committee has been working with the high school administration, the students of the Health and
Sports Academy, the district and community members to construct the outdoor plaza and its associated
facilities. Meetings and interviews have been made with over 2 dozen prominent community members,
political leaders, alumni, family members and district leaders to assess the feasibility to fund and complete
Phase II the fitness center. The response was very positive in support of Phase II.
As the school year 2012-13 closed significant changes occurred in the leadership of the school district
and at Grant Union High School. This school year (2013-14) the district has an entirely new top administration
and a new principal at Grant Union High School. Fortunately the former principal of Grant Union High School
(Craig Murray) is serving as the executive director of secondary education in the district and the new principal
at Grant Union High School is its former assistant principal, Darris Hinson. The transitions within the district
and high school during the prior school year interrupted the progress that was being made to fund and
complete the fitness center.
Today completion of Phase II of the fitness center is back on track. The Sacramento Housing and
Redevelopment Agency grant of $400,000 has been extended through June 2014, the design plans for Phase II
have received approval from the State of California, Craig Murray and Darris Hinson are completing an
agreement with the Sacramento Parks and Recreation to jointly operate Fitness center complex with the Twin
Rivers Unified School District, and the District has committed to fund the completion of Phase II of the fitness
center.
The Grant Union High School Health Sports Academy Fund Development Committee continues to meet
and support the goals of the Health and Sports Academy and its goal of improving the health and wellness of
both students and community served by Grant Union High School. Among the projects under consideration
are fully equipping the fitness center with state of the art training stations, increasing parent and community
access to the facility, hosting community and family wellness and fitness programs, and becoming a center for
community health services.
The Grant Union High School Health Sports Academy Fund Development Committee would like to
thank everyone that has contributed to the ongoing progress and success of the Fitness Center Project. We
would also like to encourage your continued support and participation as the Health Sports Academy program
expands to improve the health and wellness of the students and community served by Grant Union High
School.
