Alumni Induction 2011The alumni association is growing! On May 16, the Class of 2011 was inducted into the Oldenburg Academy Alumni Association by President Barb Gillman Lamping ’71. When addressing the 55 graduating seniors, Barb asked them to stay connected to Oldenburg Academy. They are instrumental throughout our growth, key to our future success, and testament to those who believe that what is done here at OA is worth any sacrifices that we make. After reciting the Alumni Pledge, the graduating seniors were given a special gift from the Alumni Association and a sports pass for next year’s athletic events. Lunch was served with the help of the Alumni Association Officers, Trustees, and Board and the Oldenburg Academy School Board. Senior Mass followed in the Sisters Chapel.

Alumni: thank you for making a differenceAs I complete my tenth year as President of Oldenburg Academy I pause and reflect on all the gifts and blessings this position has offered. At the top of the list is coming to know so many of you and learning about how you are making an impact on our world. It is awesome to experience our grads going forth and developing into mature young adults. We are so proud of all of our alums who continue to live the ICA/OA mission through ministries, volunteer efforts, and charitable gifts.

We have a rich legacy and a common bond of being educated in the Franciscan tradition. Service and giving back to others is what we are all about. Special thanks to each of you for your volunteer efforts and financial gifts throughout the year to our Annual Fund, Reverse Raffle, Pro-Am Golf Outing, Easter Egg Hunt, and so much more. Most of all, thanks for all you do to promote your Alma Mater to your friends and family!

Each year during the Alumni Induction and Senior Luncheon I marvel at the families who have passed on the legacy of an ICA/OA education. Thank you for your endless sacrifices for ensuring that we are here for generations to come.

You truly are a gift and blessing to us! You are ICA/OA alive today! May our loving God bless you abundantly for all you do for others and for gifting the Academy with your time, treasure and talent.

Have a blessed summer!

Reverse Raffle thanksThanks to everyone who helped with Oldenburg Academy’s 22nd Annual Reverse Raffle, “Come Sail OA.” Your help, even in the smallest way, made a tremendous impact on this event. It was a wonderful evening for all attending. Your generous support directly impacts each and every student at OA. Thanks to Barb Bohman and Susan Strange Glaser ‘80 who co-chaired this event, Mary Dickey, live auction chair, and a great committee of volunteers: Jean Beischel, Janet Borst, Diana Ryker Brunsman ’71, Mary Beth Hortemiller Dickman ’78, Kathy Kuntz Dietz ’76, Kathy Fangman, Jackie Wenning Fitzgerald ’80, Sr. Ruth Mary Forthofer ’51, Mary Harrah, Lynn Hertel, Denise Johnson, Marty Junker, Janet Grieshop Kirschner ’78, Carol Reed, Melanie Riehle, Mary Ellen Rippe, Heidi Shenk, Jane Smith, Kim Mollaun Smith

’77, Mary Beth Simmermeyer Welsh ’75, Katie Welsh ’06, and Rita Strange Wilder ’83. Thanks to our Masters of Ceremonies, the junior class, the Academy Singers, the cheerleaders, and the OA faculty, parents, alumni and friends who assisted with event set up or volunteered the night of the event. Thanks also to our event sponsors, gift donors, those who purchased raffle tickets, and attendees. Your participation made this event a great success!

The fourth annual OA Easter Egg Hunt was held on April 23 with over 100 people in attendance. Under cloudy skies (but no rain!) children searched the grounds outside ICA Hall for over 1,000 candy-filled eggs. The Easter bunny was available for pictures and hugs and everyone gathered in the cafeteria after the hunt for refreshments. Newborn to tweens had a great time celebrating Easter at this fun event, bringing together alumni and the community. Several local businesses generously donated food and items for this event: McDonald’s, Ruth Ann’s Hallmark, The Bookshelf, and Snikkers and Peanuts. Join us for the Easter Egg Hunt next year on Saturday, April 7!

The first annual holly’s rOAd to education 5k walk/run was held on April 16th. It was a rainy, rather dreary day, but within the mist of the gloomy weather, more than 65 participants and more than a dozen volunteers brought their own rays of sunshine, warmth and happiness to the streets of Oldenburg. We all came together that morning to help fund the newly established Holly Bruns Memorial Scholarship for Oldenburg Academy.

Through the generosity of numerous sponsors, donors and participants, this event grossed $5,500! The planning committee is beyond grateful to everyone who helped in ANY way. We are looking ahead to next year already, in the hopes to do as well, and YES, even better than this year! We have ideas, people. Big ideas! We’re going to promote a ‘virtual walk’ so more people who can’t physically be at the event will still be able to FULLY participate! We hope to get even MORE sponsors and feet on the ground the day of the event. This of course will require even more volunteers! So, if your heart tugs and you want to help but can’t actually WALK or RUN, please volunteer in some way. (More information on how that can happen will be available closer to the next event!)

To wrap things up, we want to say, THANK YOU. That doesn’t feel like it covers it enough, but THANK YOU for all the support for this cause. We look forward to the 2nd Annual holly’s rOAd to education and look forward to meeting more people through participation and volunteering.

Here is a link to a slideshow from the event, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfKeY491hNc. It’s not perfect but we think it shows the TRUE atmosphere of the day. It certainly wasn’t about the rain! Save the date for the second annual holly’s rOAd to education 5k Walk/Run scheduled for April 28, 2012 at Oldenburg Academy.

Heartwarming thanks from the Planning CommitteeNita Mauer ’82, Julie Daly Neyer ’82, & Tina Caldwell ‘80

I had the privilege and honor of coming to know Mark and Joann Fledderman when I took the position as Oldenburg Academy President ten years ago. Their passion for Oldenburg Academy is witnessed through their years of giving back to an educational institution that impacted their lives. They exemplify what it means to give back to an organization that made a significant difference in their lives with their time, talent and treasure.

As you may remember, Mrs. Joann Reer Fledderman ’61 received the Outstanding Volunteer Service Award in 2004. This award was initiated ten years ago to recognize the volunteer efforts of individuals in service to Oldenburg Academy. Individuals receiving this award are recognized for their leadership, faithfulness, and contributions of time, talent, and treasure. To this day she continues to be a loyal and trusted volunteer at OA. She remains active in the Alumni Association, having served as an officer of the board and on a variety of committees, as well as working at Twice Blessed Resale one day a week.

In January 2011, during Catholic Schools Week Eucharistic Celebration, Oldenburg Academy presented the 2010-2011 Outstanding Volunteer Service Award to Mr. Mark Fledderman.

Truth be told, Mark has been more than a volunteer to Oldenburg Academy.

Mark would say his commitment to the Academy started over forty five years ago when he first met Joann at the Morris Church picnic. He would go on to say that he became invested in Oldenburg Academy when he “scaled the walls” to spend time with his future wife, Joann. Joann and Mark married, settled in Batesville and started a family with four girls and one boy. Joann taught and substitute taught at St. Louis School, while Mark worked for Proctor & Gamble. After 29 years at P&G, Mark retired and began working as OA’s Business Operations Manager, helping to oversee major facility projects, budgeting, benefits and much more. To date, Mark has attempted to retire from OA three times. Although officially retired, he is still consulted for special projects.

Following in the footsteps of their mother, all four of Mark and Joann’s daughters attended the Academy: Lynn

’84, Debi ’86, Erin ’98 and Taryn ’05. Mark and Joann will both tell you that, had the Academy been coed at the time, Kurt would also be among the OA alumni ranks. Much to their daughters’ dismay Joann and Mark were regular chaperones at school dances. Even after their youngest daughter graduated, they have continued to help cheer on the “Twisters” by attending and supporting school events. Today their children Lynn (a lawyer in Batesville), Debi (a salesperson in Indianapolis), Kurt (an engineer in Alaska), Erin (a Biology teacher in Missouri), and Taryn (working in counseling services and beginning a masters degree program at NKU), will tell you that their parents’ dedication to Catholic education and desire to make this world a better place, not only for them but for all people, is exemplary.

Thank you for all you do to help ensure that a quality Franciscan Catholic education is available for future generations! Thank you for vesting your family in the OA mission!

Team of educators evaluate Oldenburg Academy and give highest ratingIn April, a team of educators appointed by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) came to evaluate Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception for the sole purpose of providing a recommendation for accreditation. The evaluation team was responsible for gauging the accountability of the school in accordance with federal regulations while using a method of quality assurance designed to distinguish schools adhering to a set of educational standards.

This evaluation process is also known to drive student performance and continuous improvement in education while examining the whole institution—the programs, the cultural context, the community of stakeholders—to determine how well the parts work together to meet the needs of students.

We are thrilled to announce that Oldenburg Academy received the proposed rating of “fully accredited” from the team. This is the highest rating any school in the state of Indiana can receive from an accreditation team. Coupled with our Four Star Status this year, the rating of fully accredited is something we are proud of and hold in high regard.

Mrs. Bettina Rose, Oldenburg Academy Principal

Generous gift supports Oldenburg Academy iPad project! The excitement is mounting as Oldenburg Academy students anticipate the arrival of the iPad 2 for the 2011-2012 school year! In the fall of 2010, the Academy announced that every student and faculty member will have the opportunity to expand his or her critical thinking and communication skills as we supplement our Four Star education with the iPad. The Academy is the trailblazer for Southeastern Indiana high schools launching 1:1 iPad computing after only the second year on the market. This decision provides endless possibilities as well as numerous academic challenges for a rural, private school of approximately 210 students.

Implementing this project involves significant financial investment, and it was important to both the Board of Trustees and the administration that this technology be affordable for all students. The Academy is grateful for the generous gift from Mr. and Mrs. Gus Hillenbrand in support of this project. Lifelong educational advocates, both Gus and Nancy possess a passion for making a difference in the lives of others through the world of technology. The Hillenbrand gift of over 250 iPads will help bring this project to fruition while allowing Oldenburg Academy the fiscal resources to continually expand current student programs.

“Oldenburg Academy will embark on a change that will transition us toward greater technological advances of the 21st century while working toward the goal of exemplifying all that a Catholic education can do for the students,” said Mrs. Bettina Rose, Principal.

“The iPads fit well with our Franciscan beliefs,” said Sr. Therese Gillman, OSF, President. “It is our hope that the iPads will help us become a greener school. We are so excited about this generous gift from the Hillenbrands. It’s like Christmas morning in the spring. I can’t wait to see the excitement on our students’ faces as they are given an iPad at the start of next year. This truly is a gift and blessing.”

“Nancy and I love Oldenburg Academy,” said Gus Hillenbrand. “If it wasn’t for the forward looking Sr. Therese, this idea never would have started. Oldenburg Academy is miles ahead of other schools.”

In preparation for the next academic year, the faculty will receive iPads as well as training through the CREATE foundation this April so they can explore all the potential educational opportunities within their curriculum.

The entire Oldenburg Academy community thanks Gus and Nancy Hillenbrand for this generous gift that will allow opportunities to await OA students every day!

Congratulations to OA Boys and Girls Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach, Merle Hines, for completing 109 marathons in 50 states (and the District of Columbia)! It took Merle 30 years, but she accomplished her goal, which was inspired by her son when he was a teen. Merle has coached at OA for 22 years and has inspired 12 OA graduates to become marathoners. The 66-year-old told Debbie Blank

of the Herald-Tribune, “I feel like there’s nothing I can’t do.” For more info, go to www.batesvilleheraldtribune.com and search for “109 Marathons in 50 States.”

Congratulations, OA Coach Merle Hines!

Participants march to remind the world and our nation that each of us is special and deserves to be given the chance to live. Each year, Oldenburg Academy has invited students to participate in the March to stand up against the laws that permit individuals to forget about the dignity of life. Participants are comprised of individuals who are against abortion, the death penalty, euthanasia and any other circumstance that allows us to forget about the dignity given to each of us as a result of being made in God’s image. ALUMNI NEWS - 10

On a rainy Thursday, May 26th, quick modifications had to be made the annual Walkathon fundraiser which is focused on purchasing a 15 passenger mini bus. Rather than all faculty and students walking the six mile trek through scenic Oldenburg, the school community rallied together and participated in our first ever Super Volleython!

In all, twenty teams participated in a series of games that was emceed by Mr. “Ace” Moorman and eventually led to the championship round. The senior team of Woodie Perkins, Jim Moorman, Dan Rohrig, and Lucas Nare of the Fantastic Four took home bragging rights for the 2010-11 school year.

A huge thanks to Jean Stacy for organizing the event, Mark Zinser for assuming student leadership, and all parents who volunteered to assist that day. Anyone who would like to see OA students riding to concert, athletic, or club events in an OA mini bus, please contact Sarah Lamping at 812.934.4440 ext. 240 and say, “I want to get on the bus!”

As you receive your Alumni News, the 20th Annual Pro-Am Golf Classic will be taking place. We have been blessed over the last 20 years with many wonderful supporters: golfers (including our PGA professionals), sponsors, advertisers, volunteers, and raffle ticket purchasers… many of whom are alumni! We sincerely thank you for your support.

If you have received your newsletter before June 20 and would like to purchase a raffle ticket for a chance to win $3,000, please call us. We will gladly complete your ticket and place it in the bucket for the drawing on June 20. Tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50. (License #124488). The odds of winning are great! About 380 tickets are sold each year.

Proceeds from this event help support the academic and tuition needs of over 200 students at OA. As a small rural school, our financial resources are limited and events like the golf outing are key to keeping our tuition among the lowest in the Tri-State.

Mark your calendar for Monday, June 18, 2012 for next year’s event! Attention former OA golf team members: bring back those fun memories of your OA golf matches by gathering your former team to play next year! We invite all alumni to join us as golfers, sponsors, advertisers, raffle ticket purchasers or volunteers!

For questions, or to volunteer for next year’s event, contact Debbie Holtel Lamping ’73 at 812.933.0737 or email [email protected].
