JUNE 2016• 17 THE PETALUMA POST PETALUMAPOST.COM Community Community Theater Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival Cinnabar Young Rep and Mentor Me Team Up for Camp Cavanagh "The Magic Flute" Opens at Cinnabar T he Board of Di- rectors for the Valley of the Moon Vintage Festival has announced the entertainment for the Opening Night Gala, which kicks off the week- end of festivities. The Northern California based dance act Notorious will take the stage on Friday, Sept. 23 at 6 PM in the Sonoma State Historic Park barracks and entertain attendees as they enjoy food and wine from local restaurants and wineries. This band has played for corporate clients like Cisco, Yahoo and YouTube and are also the back up band for ‘80s giants like Vince Neil of Motley Crüe, Howard Jones, Curt Smith of Tears for Fears, and Tone Loc. The act has a repertoire that spans the full spectrum of ‘80s and beyond, from disco to classic jazz. Notorious is known for their ability to connect and interact with an audience. This band puts on an electrifying show, as many of their fans will attest. “We thought it was important to bring in a really dynamic dance band this year,” said Maria C innabar Theater is joining forces with Mentor Me to present the first-ever Summer Theater Camp at Cavanagh Center, the headquarters of Mentor Me. Children ages 8 to 13 from both inside and outside the Mentor Me program are invited to attend the two- week camp, Monday through Friday mornings, June 13 to June 24, at the Cavanagh Center, 426 8th Street in Petaluma. The Summer The- ater Camp is part of the sum- mer programming offered by Cinnabar’s Young Repertory. This is the first time Cin- nabar has offered any of its youth programming outside the theater itself at 3 Petaluma Boulevard North. Led by staff members of Cinnabar and assisted by Young Rep veterans, Camp Cavanagh will cover stage and vocal techniques, theater and improv games, dance, playwriting, costuming and more. The last day will feature a final performance for friends and family. Scholarships are available; no child is ever turned away from Cinnabar due to lack of funds. “Cinnabar has long had a desire to align with other youth-serving organizations, so this collaboration is a perfect match,” said Diane Dragone, the new executive director of Cinnabar Theater. “I can’t wait to see all that we can accomplish together.” Cinnabar’s Young Repertory Theater was founded in 1983 to counteract the precipitous decline in arts funding for public schools and to make lasting and meaningful con- nections between the arts, the community, and the daily lives of young people. Young Rep serves youth of all ages, from 4 to 18 years old. The most prominent programs are the top-tier seasonal shows; other activities include summer camps, after-school classes, weekend seminars, ticket discounts, and community service opportunities. Mentor Me is a 15-year old nonprofit that helps at- risk youth achieve their best by providing them with one- on-one, long-term adult mentors. Operating in four Petaluma and Novato school districts and serving youth aged 5-17, the organization currently has over 300 active school-based mentorships, with 90 youth waitlisted. In 2014, Mentor Me took over management of the 12,000-square-foot Cavanagh Recreation Center, which youth can visit year-round during non-school hours for a wide range of academic, social and recreation activities, as well as support services for themselves and their families. Cinnabar, with its intimate setting, is the perfect venue to see this glorious opera. A dazzling celebration of true love conquering all, "The Magic Flute" transports audiences into an unconventional fantasy world. A prince’s quest leads to love at first sight but to prove his worth in marriage, he must first survive trials of wisdom and devotion. Lost in a faraway land, young Tamino is enlisted by The Queen of the Night to rescue her lovely daughter Pamina from the hands of Sarastro, an evil sorcerer. With the aid of a magic flute and the bumbling, lovelorn Papageno by his side, Tamino sets out on a fantastic adventure filled with danger and temptation, culminating in one final test at a mystical temple. Mozart’s final opera, The Magic Flute is both a delightful fairy tale for the whole family and a profound reflection on spiritual enlightenment.
