    Happy summer to you all:

My family has been enjoying the warm, but not too warm weather. We really dolive in a beautiful part of the country. We made a trip to Wisconsin the 2nd week of August for a family reunion. Our two 15 year old boys shared in thedriving. Thanks for all the positive thoughts as we traveled!

The board has been very busy with budgets, learning our leadership roles, andreviewing survey results. We had a retreat at my house to discuss what each of usis responsible for as a board member. We listed and debated our duties as a boardmember and used the time to train each other on our different roles as well as learnour own duties. The hope is to not lose sight of anything in the year ahead.

We also reviewed the member survey that was completed in early spring. The

Board has decided to address the three key weaknesses: retention of members, participation of members, and member recognition. I will also commit to start themeeting no later than 12:10 and complete our meetings by 1:00. I will reinstate theAltrusa Accents on the 2 nd Tuesday of every month. We will complete the surveyagain in the spring and hope that we will see the fruits of our labor.

The club and foundation budgets are being created, challenged, reviewed, andrevised. I have never seen more thought going into our budgets. We truly have agreat deal of talent in our club and board right now. Thank you all for what youdo.

    Kaye

"Page from the Past" - by Elaine Hale JonesA look back over 35 years of Altrusa International of Montrose

My first introduction to the Altrusa Club of Montrose was actually through

a cookbook titled, "Dandy Dishes by Dandy Dames," a collection of mouth-watering recipes compiled by Altrusa members. My mom, MargaretHale, was one of the charter members of the Montrose Altrusa Club in June1976 and participated in the cookbook fundraising project. The cookbook was one of several "money making projects," in the early days of the club.Other efforts included selling lemonade, visors, baked goods and usedbooks and records.

Although I'm not a big fan of wild game, "Dandy Dishes" features one of the best collections of venison, elk, pheasant and trout recipes I've seen overthe years. Another popular section of the cookbook, titled "Good Then-Good Now," highlights recipes from a century ago, like Kerosene Cake

(kerosene, thankfully, is not used in the recipe!), gingerbread and FloatingIsland (a formal dessert made from sponge cake colored with a teacupful of the juice from cooked spinach). You'll also find a handy spice guide andwords of wisdom sprinkled throughout the pages (and Joyce Loss' recipe forhomemade chicken and noodles, which we, as a club, have enjoyed on sev-eral occasions).

    Keeping In Touch

Pay It ForwardReprinted from Better H omes & Gardens August 2010

Performing a good deed for someone makes him or her more likely to do something nice for someone else, say researchers at Harvard and the University of California, San Diego. Their study provides strong evidencethat cooperative behavior spreads from person to personlike a benevolent virus. In the study, volunteerssimulated giving money away to others. The researchers observed a domino effect, in which one personskindness spread first to three people, then to nine people, and then to even more people. Whats more, aftergiving you become a more generous person wholl give to others more frequently. Happily, no ones immunefrom the kindness flu. We found that the effect works on Scrooge and Santa personalities alike, says studyco-author James H. Fowler, Ph.D, a professor at UC San Diego and expert on social networks.
