“Reaching the top requires taking a good break every time you need it! On
the way up, you must never hesitate to
stop for a while!” ― Mehmet Muratildan
This quote applies to our remarkable
Altrusans as well. We have had an awe-
some year of fundraising, volunteering
and fellowship so as we take the month
of June off, relax and recharge for an
even more fabulous upcoming year.
We have so many new and energized
members that were installed on May
16th. A special thank you to the Mem-
bership Committee for planning such an
elegant evening. We welcomed the fol-

I’d like to send a special shout out to
Kathy Shambre and Marilyn McFarland
for their hard work on the Annual Altrusa
Flower Sale. The flowers were beautiful
and, as our last fundraiser of the year,
we made $2,962. We couldn’t have
done it without so many of you buying
and selling the hanging baskets, THANK
YOU!
As you take the month of June to relax
and recharge, please mark your calen-
dars for one June Altrusa event, which I
hope you all can attend. The Member-
ship and Communications Committees
have planned the “Spring Party” for
Tuesday, June 19th at Candy Brenner’s
house. Details will go out soon, but plan
on a fun filled summer evening.
I can’t thank you all enough for such
astounding accomplishments we had
this past year from team efforts! This
year our achievements were displayed
at the Altrusa District Five Conference
by winning so many awards, thanks to
our awesome Awards Committee, Laura
Anliker and Barb Huston. Our name is
getting out into the community more
and more. With all of our new members
and continued support of current mem-
bers, we should be able to show our
community how great Altrusa of Mans-
field is.
Enjoy your June break and I look forward
to seeing all of you energized and ready
to go July 18th!
Your Altrusa Sister, Sherry

For over 50 years, Altrusa International’s mission has been to
dedicate time and effort to improving communities across the
globe. The Mansfield Altrusa organization met at the Mansfield
City Schools’ Board of Education Building to take the first steps in
distributing “buddy bags” - kits for kids that were homeless or dis-
placed around the area.
This is a project that we began talking about a little over a year
ago,” said Linda Williams, Co-Chairman of the Tools for Schools
Project. “We realized that the kids—because they’re so transient—
needed some toys or games to occupy their time when they’re not
at school. They need nutritional snacks and personal care items.”
Williams and the Co-Chairman of the program, Susie Harlan, have
worked on the project for over a year, securing funding through
various local charities and businesses. An Altrusa International
Foundation Grant assisted with the funding for the program. The
pair is coordinating the distribution of the Buddy Bags with Mans-
field City School’s SAFE program, which is dedicated to helping stu-
dents in need.
“Every school district has an obligation to take care of the kids that
are less fortunate,” said Phil Mitchell, Coordinator of the SAFE Pro-
gram. “That’s where Mansfield City Schools’ SAFE program comes
in. It stands for Student Achievement through Family Engagement,
and the things that Altrusa have been supplying in these Buddy
Bags help our families stay engaged.”
Throughout the coming weeks, the bags will be dispensed to stu-
dents chosen by the SAFE program. Over 150 bags were created
for the project, with supplies such as basic toiletries to coloring
books and other items. Source: WMFD

Susie Harlan was awarded the prestigious Ann Deley Award on Wednesday eve-
ning, May 16 during the organization’s Annual Installation and Initiation meeting.
The dinner was held at the Dan & Ed’s Events and Catering in the Reed Room.
Several new members were initiated into Altrusa and installation of next year’s
officers was completed.
Congratulations to Susie Harlan who was awarded the Anne Deley Memorial
Award this year. Susie has been an Altrusan since 2003. She has been very in-
volved with Altrusan activities, including serving as the Co-Chair of Tools for
Schools for several years. She also served as the chair of the Altrusa District
Five Conference held in Mansfield Ohio. Susie is retired but stays very active
with Altrusa and the Miss Ohio Pageant.
Mansfield Altrusans participated in the Downtown Beautification project by planting flowers to be
enjoyed by all during summer.
Approximately 200 hanging flower baskets were sold by Altrusans to support future community service
projects. Way to go Altrusans—you did it again!
