Musical Articulations

1) Staccato – light and detached. Literally, ½ of the rhythmic duration.

a. We say “di” to mimic the sound of this articulation.

b. In jazz, this is often “dit” ending the note with the tongue.

2) Legato – smooth and connected. Play for the “full value” or literally until you touch the

next note or rest. The default articulation in a slow ballad or chorale style piece is

legato.

a. We say “doo” to mimic the sound of this articulation.

3) Marcato – Heavy and detached. Literally to perform with emphasis. This is considered

an air attack for wind instruments.

a. We say “Da” to mimic the sound of this articulation.

4) Martellato – Heavy and detached BUT stop the sound with your tongue.

a. We say “Dut” to mimic the sound of this articulation.

5) Fermata – HOLD the note and WATCH THE CONDUCTOR for a release.

1) Flashcard PO (10 Points, 5 for each successful attempt)

a. Demonstrate the ability to identify your first 5 notes under 20 seconds. You must do it twice; once on a

practice run, and once with timer.

2) Assembly PO (10 Points)

a. Demonstrate the ability to assemble your instrument with all applicable accessories.

3) Holding PO (10 Points)

a. Demonstrate the ability to correctly hold your instrument with the proper posture and hand positions.

4) Maintenance PO (10 Points)

a. Have all the necessary equipment to clean and maintain your instrument.

b. Demonstrate the ability to clean and maintain your instrument.

c. Percussionists are excused from this PO and automatically earn the 10 points.

5) Long Tone PO (10 Points, 1 per second; flute and tuba are out of 6 points)

a. Play and hold a concert F for 10 seconds. 6 seconds for flute and tuba.

6) Consistency PO (10 Points, 2 per attempt)
