What are altmetrics?

u Altmetrics are data that can explain both the volume and nature ofattention that research receives online.

u Altmetrics are complementary to citation-based metrics (citationcounts, Journal Impact Factor etc.).

u Altmetrics can measure how many people have shared orengaged with a scholarly output.u Examples of this include mentions on Twitter or in the mainstream media;

page views and downloads; GitHub repository watchers.

u Some types of altmetrics data can signal that research is changinga field of study, the public’s health, or having any other number oftangible effects upon larger society.u Examples of this include references in public policy documents; or

commentary from experts and practitioners.

What are altmetrics? Advantages!

u Altmetrics are (near) instant: By virtue of being sourced from theWeb and not from journals and books, it’s possible to monitor andcollate mentions of work online as soon as it’s published. Many typesof altmetrics are updated on a daily basis.

u Altmetrics can uncover more diverse attention than citation-basedmetrics: Altmetrics can complement citations in that they help youto understand the many ‘flavours’ of attention and impact researchcan have.

u Altmetrics apply to more than journal articles and books:Researchers are sharing their data, software, presentations, andother scholarly outputs online more than ever before. That meanswe can track their use on the Web as easily as we can for articlesand books.

What are altmetrics? Limitations!

u Altmetrics don’t tell the whole story: As described above, altmetrics area complement to, not a replacement for, things like informed peerreview and citation-based metrics. Think of altmetrics as just one tool ofmany you’ve got in your toolbox for understanding the many types ofattention that research receives.

u Like with any metric, there’s a potential for gaming: Anyone withenough time on their hands can artificially inflate the altmetrics for theirresearch. That’s why altmetrics providers like Altmetric, PLOS and SSRNhave measures in place to identify and correct for gaming. Don’t forgetto look at the underlying qualitative data to see who has been talkingabout the research, and what they’ve been saying.

u Altmetrics are relatively new, more research into their use is needed:Though we’re learning a lot about how often research is shared online,we don’t yet know a lot about why it happens–more research isneeded. Until we know more, use and interpret altmetrics carefully.

u General best practicesu Experts have recommended using altmetrics in a manner that’s

accurate, auditable, and meaningful.u Accurate data is up-to-date, well-described and has been filtered to

remove attempts at deceitful gaming.u Auditable data implies completely open and transparent calculation

formulas for aggregation, navigable links to original sources and accessby anyone without a subscription.

u Meaningful data needs context and reference…How many tweets is alot? What percentage of papers are cited in Wikipedia? Representingraw counts as statistically rigorous percentiles, ideally localized todomain, type of product, or year of publication, makes it easy tointerpret the data responsibly.
