Using the WordPress SEO plugin

Now we won’t go in-depth in this article, but perhaps will do so in the future. Instead we will cover basic blog post SEO.

Unlike the All in One SEO Pack, this plugin will not automatically create meta data if you don’t manually fill in the fields.

However by taking the time to fill in the fields you should hopefully produce better results.

At the bottom of each page or post you should see the WordPress SEO plugin fields.

When filling in the details straight away the plugin shows how advanced its features are. It shows an example of your google listing, which is dynamically changed as you type.

It counts how many times the keywords that you are using appear in your main content, plus provides a useful counter.

Once the page or post has been created / updated you can perform a ‘Page Analysis’, which is impressive.

It provides useful tips for improving the page, plus provides useful information such as keyword density and where the keyword appears in your copy, amongst other useful data.

There is also an ‘advanced’ tab displayed in the WordPress SEO box on your page or posts.

Most users will not need to touch this, but it is worth noting there is a 301 redirect option, which is useful if you’ve moved content.

WordPress SEO’s XML Sitemap creation

A nifty addition to the WordPress SEO plugin is its ability to create XML sitemap files.

These are used by some search engines, such as Google to find out details about your website, including how often a page is expected to change.

WordPress SEO XML Sitemaps

It only takes a moment to enable this option and saves you from having to install a separate XML sitemap WordPress plugin.

However please be careful about turning on the option to ping the servers listed when you publish content, as you might already have them set to be pinged elsewhere in your WordPress blog.

Conclusion

This article split over two posts does not cover the full functionality of the WordPress SEO plugin.

Already just with the data preview and analysis features alone, it is a SEO plugin worthy of consideration.

It might require you to modify your theme to smoothly run.

It will require you to spend more time looking at your meta content.

However surely to gain improved results it is worth the time and effort installing this plugin?

It isn’t a plugin that perhaps self-hosted WordPress novices can install, it is however a plugin that page or post writers should easily be able to use.
