Symptoms as common as fatigue, anxiousness, headaches and sleep difficulties can be triggered by neurotransmitter imbalances.*
Serotonin Dopamine
Glutamate
Your nervous system helps you handle stressors and health challenges through neurotransmitters. When properly balanced, neurotransmitters make sure the right messages are sent to and received by your body. When they’re out of balance, health challenges can persist indefinately. If you suffer from recurrent, complex symptoms, ask your practitioner about testing to help rebalance your neurotransmitter levels.*

How Important Is A Name?
Medicine is one of those strange words that take on different meaning depend-
ing on how the word is used. The practice of medicine is what occurs in doctors’ and other health care practitioners’ offices, and the noun medicine can also refer to drugs or treatments used to treat disease. The word medicine is derived from the Latin ars medicina, meaning “the art of healing.” Such a definition is interesting and raises questions. For example, when we think of medicine, do we think of medicine as a science—or an art? We re-quire clinical trials before drugs and treatments are approved, and clinicians rely on scientific tests to determine how to treat patients.
Yet, one of the definitions of art is a skill that is acquired by experi-ence, study, or observation. Art requires the conscious use of skill and creative imagination, yet most medical evaluations have little basis in imagination; we look for empiri-cal data to evaluate medical issues.
My entire rant on the word medi-cine comes from a recent discussion that I had with an industry consul-tant. He was urging me to change the name of our magazine. His claim is that the term alternative medicine is going to be identified primarily with medical marijuana now that Wash-ington and Colorado have legalized its use (apparently marijuana retail-ers are setting themselves up under a shingle that reads “Alternative Medicine”). I guess medical mari-
juana can be considered an alterna-tive medicine, but so can garlic, berries, many exotic fruits, and so much more. What are your thoughts about the name of the magazine? I would appreciate your feedback. You can email me at [email protected] with your response.
The current issue of Alternative Medicine focuses on Alzheimer’s dis-ease, which may be one of the most difficult conditions our aging popu-lation faces. Our condition spotlight this month concentrates on how and what to eat in order to slow the pro-gression of Alzheimer’s. Currently there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, and those suffering from the condition might even live for 20 years with the disease. Although the majority of those with Alzheimer’s are over the age of 65, up to five percent of people with the disease have early onset Alzheimer’s (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s. Visit our website to see a list of the 10 warning signs for Alzheimer’s.
Finally, I hope that you have a chance to try the recipes included in our issues. Cooking tips is one of the most popular requests that we receive. We appreciate your feedback, so please send us your concerns, article suggestions, or any comments about the magazine.
