Abstract for paper presentation
Alternative medicine in oral mucosal lesions
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the term for diverse group of medical
products and practices that are not part of standard care. These resources complement or replace
conventional therapies, or used as palliative therapy with a specific emphasis on research that
explores the biological mechanisms of action, as well as their efficacy, safety, costs, patterns of
use and/or implementation. CAM practices are often grouped into broad categories such as
natural products, mind & body medicine, manipulative & body based practices. It encompasses
movement therapies – a broad range of Eastern & Western based approaches. Certain dietary
modifications such as inclusion of zinc, flavanoids, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, adenosine
monophosphate and other natural substances may be useful for management of oral mucosal
lesions or preventing recurrence.
At present there is no gold standard treatment for management for oral mucosal lesions that has
clinically proven to be effective without any adverse effects. Most treatments have been
hampered by the absence of uniform reporting system for classification & staging of the disease.
All-natural treatment, beneficial for the healing of oral mucosal lesions & sores comprises
medicinal herbs with demonstrated anti-inflammatory, restorative and regenerating action. These
