4 Latino College Dollars • 2006 – 2007 Directory

November 2006

Dear Friends,

Time and again, research conducted by the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute (TRPI) has

revealed that an overwhelming majority of Latino parents and families value a

college education, yet they perceive the cost of higher education to be prohibitive.

Many families are not aware that numerous scholarships and grants – free money –

are available specifically to Latino students, and every year thousands of dollars go

unclaimed.

Today, most scholarships are publicized online, and yet we realize that it takes time

to research scholarship opportunities, and that computer access is often limited in

Latino homes.

This fall, with generous funding from The Sallie Mae Fund, Southern California

Edison and The Walt Disney Company, we have been able to assemble an up-to-date

directory of scholarships that are offered by regional organizations and targeted

specifically to California Latino students.

Best of luck to you as you work to find the financial support you deserve.

Sincerely,

Harry P. Pachon, Ph.D.

Estimados Padres y Familiares,

Atentamente,

Harry P. Pachon, Ph.D.PresidenteTomás Rivera Policy InstituteProfesor de Política PúblicaFacultad de Póliza, Planificación y DesarrolloUSC

What are scholarships?Scholarships are free money that is available to offsetthe cost of school. Students have to apply for schol-arships, which are awarded on a case-by-case basis, often based on merit. If a student receives a scholar-ship, it does not have to be paid back.

What do you need to have to qualify for a scholarship?Every scholarship in the following pages has varyingrequirements — including its own application, whichyou will need to get and complete — but it is a goodidea to pull together a folder of the following infor-mation (or as much of it as you can), as almost allscholarships will ask for some combination of thesethings:

• One or Two Essays

• Letter(s) of Reference

• Writing Sample

• Resume

• Transcripts

• Copy of Student Aid Report (SAR- see below)

• Parent and Student Tax Returns and W-2 Forms

• GPA Certification Form

• Enrollment Verification Form

• Copy of Financial Aid Award Letter

Beware of scholarship scams.Be wary of scholarship applications that require an“application fee.” Also proceed with caution withscholarship matching services that guarantee resultsand sales pitches that describe themselves as financialaid workshops or seminars.

Do you need to be a citizen or legal per-manent resident to qualify for a scholarship? Some scholarships require proof of citizenship inorder to qualify for a scholarship, but others do not.Lists of both types of scholarships are in the back ofthis directory.

Where can you get more printed informationabout paying for college?Call the federal government for a free guide, inEnglish or in Spanish, to student financial aid: 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). This guide is an excellent comprehensive “how to” resource.

Are you entering college next year?Complete the FAFSA as soon as possible. If you do nothing else, complete the Free Applicationfor Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), immediately afterJanuary 1 of your senior year. It is a form that mostschools use to determine financial aid, and money isawarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.

After you submit your FAFSA, you will be sent aStudent Aid Report (SAR), which tells how muchmoney your family is expected to contribute to yourcollege education for one year. This helps schoolsand scholarship organizations know how much moneyyou will need in financial aid.

About this directory…This directory contains all regional organizations which the TomásRivera Policy Institute (TRPI) could identify that award grants andscholarships targeting California Latino students.

Additionally, TRPI has included the largest national organizations (in total dollars awarded) that grant scholarships for which California’sLatino students may qualify.

TRPI acknowledges that new scholarship opportunities are becomingavailable on a continual basis, and urges readers to submit new scholar-ship listings or corrections to TRPI.

TRPI also encourages students to check for scholarships from collegesor universities they are attending, as specific scholarships may beavailable that are not listed in this directory.

Developing this directory…

In 2005 the TRPI undertook a study to identify all the organizations inSouthern California where Southern California Latino students andparents could receive information about, or apply for, college scholarships and grants.

Among the outcomes of the study was a recommendation for organi-zations to actively disseminate hard copies of online data, as theonline scholarship search process was found to be time-consumingand complicated.

The difficulties of online scholarship searches were furthermore foundto be compounded by the reality that many Latino households do nothave Internet access. Any online search is likely to be undertaken at alibrary or school, where time on a shared computer is limited.

In 2006, in response to these findings, TRPI commissioned the devel-opment of this printed scholarship directory.

It should be noted that, while TRPI researchers recognized that therewould be value in including all organizations, nationally, to which Latinostudents could apply for scholarships, such an undertaking was beyondthe scope of the project.
