Our Congressman, Lionel Van Deerlin, D-SD, former news and TV reporter, and a staunch booster for this area says that these soaring costs are '"threa'tening to price average SD county folks out of the homebuying market'". He told the House Subcommittee on Housing that "matters are reachin the desperation point;" submitted testimony in response to an invitation by the subcommittee, _which is ivstigating problems besettmg the buildmg industry. "The cost of lumber once accounted for about 6½o/o of the price of a home,'" Van Deerlin said. "Now it represents nearly 13o/o. He said Congress has a duty to protect both buyers and builders from the "devastating effects" of inflation. ·Every month the food index goes up. A few short years ago we thought a nickle for an apple was high but now a big apple costs 15¢ or more! And all fruits and produce are higher than ever. Well do I remember the soaring prices just before that tragic Oct. 29, 1929 when the depression bit and so many jumped out of windows. Perhaps it might be well to be prepared for the worst in this present situation. Maybe everyone should dig a cellar and stock it against a day when bread could go to $1 a loaf! House's concern about the forthcoming school board election, but wouldn't Mr. House and other interested voters like to ask the candidates some questions concerning the Alpine School District? These candidates are running for the Alpine School Board, not the University of California! Sincerely. By the Duuble C ' · If you want to watch the Lakeside

Rodeo Queen contest, be at the school gym tomorrow at 1. The following entered: Petty Sattler, Karen Nelson, Holly Riding, Stacy Robinson, Brenda Hartman, Terry Plympton, Victoria Young, Justine Curtis, all from Lakeside, and Linda Rushing, only entry from Alpine.

The rodeo is scheduled for April 17 -19 , in conjunction with the Lakeside Family F air. Proceeds will help complete El Cap's stadium. We helped on many money raising projects for this stadium and are happy to see it nearly finished even though we graduated two years ago.

Steve and Stacy King moved from their home on Tavern Road to El Cajon. They took their horses and are mem -b ers of Alpine Riding Club. They sold their home and business to Doug Benson and his family.

Don ' t forget the pony show tomorrow . in Lakeside at the Tumbleweed ring. entry fees are $2. It is approved by the SD County Exhibitors' Assn. and the Junior Horsemen. Should be interesting with Rocky Wright judging.

Ginny Blanton, former Alpiner, was going to a horseshow_ Sunday when a_ truck and trailer whipped on a turn m El Cajon and ran her off the road. She w as towing two of her horses and luckily didn't turn over. She and the horses w ere slightly injured but nothing permanently.

John Hendricks bought the nice saddle Maureen Carrell had for sale in the last issue. It was a real buy too.

W e have never been at an Easter Sunrise Service but would like to go. Several Alpiners always attend the one held in Lakeside and now the Crest riders are scheduling one for Sunday starting at 5; Hope it is a nice, clear day. Rev. Woodhouse will preside over the services. We would try to go to one of them but are not going to oe home Sunday.

We just learned that members of El Cap's stadium fund are staging an allday gymkhana show the 12, and Sunday an equitation show at Tumbleweed ring. Gymkhana entry fees are $1. per class. Sunday's show is $2. to enter with Rusty Hunter judging.

Nikki and Bob Menconi brought home their Appaloosa stud Polka Dot Panda Monday afternoon. We weren't home or would have gotten bis picture for this issue.

Alpine Riding Club has planned a ride and barbecue today starting at the Scully house with the riding going to the river and then back for food at their house on Tavern. Sounds like fun but we will be looking at the Grand Canyon for the first time we hope. We had planned on going to Oregon but just didn' t have the time so will go when school is out.

Interested in Arabian horses? If you are, there is a beautiful show going on today thru Sunday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. More than 1, 000 entries have 5een booked so far and it is a benefit for the Pop Warner Football Club.

The show will have a complete va · riety of western and English classes and a special 200th Anniversary costume class, and a parade of champions plus the Sunday costume classes when the horses and riders will be decked out in exotic Arabian attire,

A charge of $1 for adults and kids over 12 for the afternoon and evening performances.

17 GAS KILLS GIRLS IN CAMPER

Deadly monoxide seeping into a camper apparently killed Kerry, 4, and Cindy, 5, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle D. Jacquot, of SD while en route from Santee to Descanso where they discovered the tragedy. They were on their way to a weel<end campout, stopped to check the sisters. CHP officers failed with oral resuscitation. Later in EC Valley Hospital they were prouounced dead.

Note- It is against the law to ride in a trailer, perhaps campers should be included, or some means should be used to test for gas while underway. -Ed.

·«l- .. From earliest times, people with res_::,:;j ==: :-:. piratory troubles came to Alpine for the

1 '"" relief its mild weather promised. To this ' day, the local newspaper, The Alpine

SPRING THIS YEAR is bringing more than blossoms to the rural community of Alpine. Sometime in April, massive road-building machines will complete Interstate 8 through the town, making it just 30 freeway miles from San Diego.

Although Alpine has become easier to reach due to road improvements over the years, it has always seemed remote from city life. The freeway will speed up development of the area, but Alpine is likely to remain a refuge for people who like fresh air and horses.

Homesteaders first settled in Alpine around 1860, when the community was known as the Viejas stop on the stage line from Lakeside to the gold mines at Julian. The name was derived from 4,180-foot Viejas Mountain, northeast of town. One of the settlers said the countryside reminded him of the Swiss Alps, and in 1900, the residents decided to change the name officially to Alpine Center.

I

Sun, says on its masthead, "Best Climate in the U.S. by Government Report." And the Sun's editor adds, "When the weather is bad here, it's worse everywhere else."

Horseback riding is a popular activity, and the big event of the year is Viejas Days Horse Show ( May 10 and 11) which draws entries from as far awa; as Phoenix.

Despite its name, Alpine is not on a mountaintop. Elevation of the town ranges from 1,800 to 2,600 feet, which the Chamber of Commerce points out is above the fog, beyond the smog and, most of the time, below the snow level.

The 4,300 residents of Alpine include retirees, health seekers, poultry ranchers and local businessmen. Completion of the freeway should bring more people who will live in Alpine and commute to jobs elsewhere. As a consequence, the pace of housing construction has stepped up. Further gains to the economy are expected as newcomers are drawn by Alpine's relaxed country living.

FIRE BURNS MILLERS OUT Sunday afternoon around 3:15 while Mr, and Mrs. Robt. Miller were out, the 2-bedroom home owned by A. R. Carlson of Gorden Real Estate, 955 S, Grade Road, burned almost to the ground taking with it most of the possessions of the Miller family. Only thing that was saved was son Charles ' ham radio equipment that was in the garage. Their beautiful, near new piano was gone, stereo and records, coin collections, etc. They have some insurance but said " not near enough to cover the loss" , They are looking for a home to take care of their immediate needs till something permanent can be secured. Mrs, Miller and her husband own and operate Alpine Printing Co. , 2251½ Alpine Blvd. TUCKERS CUTTING BIG OLD TREES Alpine Tree Service, the new business here, run by Henry Tucker and sons Wm. and Thomas, are busy removing those tall, ancient eucalyptus from the corner of Alpine Blvd • . and S.
