Moisture CondensationYou may notice the CD playback sound wavering due tocondensation. If this happens, remove the disc from theplayer and wait about an hour for the moisture toevaporate.

Damaged DiscDo not attempt to play cracked, warped, or damageddiscs. Playing a bad disc could severely damage theplayback mechanism.

MaintenanceIf you have problems, do not attempt to repair the unityourself. Return it to your Alpine dealer or the nearestAlpine Service Station for servicing.

Installation LocationMake sure the CDA-7876RB/CDA-7873R/TDA-7588RB/TDA-7587R will not be installed in a location subjected to:

• Direct sun and heat• High humidity and water• Excessive dust• Excessive vibrations

Handling the Detachable Front Panel• Do not expose to rain or water.• Do not drop or apply shock.

Never Attempt the FollowingDo not grip or pull out the disc while it is being pulledback into the player by the automatic reloadingmechanism.Do not attempt to insert a disc into the unit when the unitpower is off.

Inserting DiscsYour player accepts only one disc at a time for playback.Do not attempt to load more than one disc.Make sure the label side is facing up when you insert thedisc. Your player will automatically eject any disc that isinserted incorrectly. If the player continues to eject acorrectly inserted disc, push the RESET switch with apointed object such as a ballpoint pen.Playing a disc while driving on a very bumpy road mayresult in skips, but this will not scratch the disc or damagethe player.

New DiscsAs a protective measure to prevent the CD from jamming,the CD player will automatically eject discs with irregularsurfaces or inserted incorrectly. When a new disc isinserted into the player and ejected after initial loading,using your finger, feel around the inside of the centre holeand outside edge of the disc. If you feel any small bumpsor irregularities, this could inhibit proper loading of thedisc. To remove the bumps, rub the inside edge of the holeand outside edge of the disc with a ballpoint pen or othersuch instrument, then insert the disc again.

Irregular Shaped DiscsBe sure to use round shape discs only for this unit andnever use any special shape discs.Use of special shape discs may cause damage to themechanism.

Correct HandlingDo not drop the disc while handling. Hold the disc so youwill not leave fingerprints on the surface. Do not affixtape, paper, or gummed labels to the disc. Do not write onthe disc.

Disc CleaningFingerprints, dust, or soil on the surface of the disc couldcause the CD player to skip. For routine cleaning, wipethe playing surface with a clean, soft cloth from the centreof the disc to the outer edge. If the surface is heavilysoiled, dampen a clean, soft cloth in a solution of mildneutral detergent before cleaning the disc.

Disc AccessoriesThere are various accessories available on the market forprotecting the disc surface and improving sound quality.However, most of them will influence the thickness and/ordiameter of the disc. Using such accessories can cause thedisc to be out of standard specifications and may createoperational problems. We recommend not using theseaccessories on discs played in Alpine CD players.

Tape SlackCheck and make sure any slack in the tape is taken upbefore inserting the tape into the unit. A loose tape can getcaught in the mechanism and cause damage to the unitand the tape itself. Tighten the tape by inserting a pencilor a similar instrument into the spindle hole and turn untilall the slack has been taken up.

Excessively Thin TapeC-120 type cassette tapes are not recommended for use inautomobile tape players.

Precision Tape MechanismPrevent any foreign objects from entering the cassetteopening as the precision mechanism and tape head may bedamaged.Never play dirty or dusty tapes – they can damage the tapehead.

Tape Head CleaningPeriodic cleaning (approximately every 20 hours of use)of the tape head with a wet type head-cleaning cassettetape (available at audio stores) is necessary for bestperformance.

Fuse ReplacementWhen replacing the fuse(s), the replacement must be ofthe same amperage as shown on the fuse holder. If thefuse blows more than once, carefully check all electricalconnections for shorted circuitry. Also have your vehicle'svoltage regulator checked.

Detaching the Front Panel

1 Press and hold the POWER button at least 3seconds to turn off the power.

2 Press the (Release) button at left side untilthe front panel pops out.

3 Grasp the left side of the front panel and pull itout.

NOTES• The front panel may become hot in normal usage

(especially the connector terminals on the back of thefront panel), this is not malfunction.

• To protect the front panel, place it in the suppliedcarrying case.

Attaching the Front Panel

1 First, insert the right side of the front panel intothe main unit. Align the groove on the front panelwith the projections on the main unit.

2 Push the left side of the front panel until it locksfirmly into the main unit.

NOTEBefore attaching the front panel, make sure that there isno dirt or dust on the connector terminals and no foreignobject between the front panel and the main unit.

Basic Operation• Controlable with Remote Control

(CDA-7873R/TDA-7587R only)This unit can be controlled with an optionalAlpine remote control. For details, consult yourAlpine dealer.Point the optional remote control transmitter atthe remote control sensor.

• Connectable to Remote Control Interface BoxYou can operate this unit from the vehicle'scontrol unit when an Alpine Remote ControlInterface Box (optional) is connected. Fordetails, contact your Alpine dealer.

Initial System Start-Up

Immediately after installing or applying power to theunit, it should be initialized. Press the RESET switchwith a ballpoint pen or any other pointed object.

About Demonstration

This unit is equipped a Demonstration function.Soon after resetting the unit or after turning theunit on the first time, the demonstration startsautomatically.To cancel the demonstration, refer to“Demonstration” on page 10.

Turning Power On and Off

1 Press the POWER button to turn on the unit.

NOTEThe unit can be turned on by pressing any other buttonexcept the eject c button.

The volume level gradually increases to the previouslevel you were listening to before the unit was turnedoff. Press and hold the POWER button for at least 3seconds to turn off the unit.

NOTEThe very first time the power is turned on, the volumewill start from level 12, the BBE will be on in the tunermode.

Movable display

The movable display may be adjusted to 3different angles depending upon user preference.

1 Press the ANGLE 89 button to adjust the angleof the movable display.

NOTES• The display will close a half minute after the ignition

key is turned to the OFF position.• The adjusted angle of the display is stored in memory.

There is no need to re-adjust the angle when the poweris turned back on.

CAUTIONKeep hands (or any other object) away from the displaywhile it is opening or closing to avoid damage or injury.The back of the movable display will get very warmunder normal operating conditions. This is not amalfunction. Do not touch.

Adjusting Source Signal Level

If the difference in volume level between the CDplayer and FM radio is too great, adjust the FMsignal level as follows.

1 Press and hold the SETUP button for at least 3seconds.

2 Press the f UP button repeatedly to select"FM-LV."Each press of the f UP button scrolls themodes as follows:

Adjusting Volume/Balance(Between Left and Right)/Fader(Between Front and Rear)

1 Press the MODE (Audio Control) knobrepeatedly to choose the desired mode.Each press changes the modes as follows:

NOTES• If the MODE (Audio Control) knob is not rotated

within 5 seconds after selecting the BALANCE, orFADER mode, the unit automatically returns to theVOLUME mode.

• When the subwoofer or BBE mode is ON, theirrespective levels may be adjusted.

2 Rotate the MODE (Audio Control) knob until thedesired sound is obtained in each mode.

NOTEWhen the temperature inside the unit rises, the volumemay decrease momentarily. This is not a malfunction.

Selecting BBE Mode

The BBE (Barcus Berry Electronics) processorinstalled in this unit is designed to correct thephase distortion inherent in most loudspeakerdesigns. Ensuring the phase integrity of the signaldriving the speakers improves the accuratereproduction of the sound.

1 Press and hold the BBE button for at least 2seconds to turn on and off the BBE mode.

2 In BBE mode, press the MODE (Audio Control)knob to select the BBE adjusting mode.Each press changes the adjusting mode.

3 To change to a desired BBE level, rotate theMODE (Audio Control) knob.The BBE level can be changed from +1 to +3.

NOTEThe initial mode is +2.

Dimmer Control

Set the DIMMER control to AUTO to decrease theillumination brightness of the unit with the headlights of the vehicle ON. This mode is useful if youfeel the unit's backlighting is too bright at night.

Automatic Seek Tuning

Manual Storing of Station Presets

1 Select the radio band and tune in a desired radiostation you wish to store in the preset memory.

2 Press and hold any one of the Preset buttons (1through 6) for at least 2 seconds until the stationfrequency on the display blinks.

3 Press the Preset button into which you wish tostore the station while the frequency display isblinking (within 5 seconds).The display stops blinking once the station hasbeen memorized. The display shows the band,preset No. with a triangle (9) and stationfrequency memorized.

4 Repeat the procedure to store up to 5 otherstations onto the same band.To use this procedure for other bands, simplyselect the band desired and repeat theprocedure.A total of 30 stations can be stored in the presetmemory (6 stations for each band; FM1, FM2,FM3, MW and LW).

NOTEIf you store a station in a preset memory which alreadyhas a station, the current station will be cleared andreplaced with the new station.

Setting RDS Reception Mode andReceiving RDS Stations

The RDS (Radio Data System) is a radioinformation system using the 57 kHz subcarrier ofregular FM broadcast. The RDS allows you toreceive a variety of information such as trafficinformation, station names, and to automaticallyre-tune to a stronger transmitter that isbroadcasting the same programme.


2 Press the "F" button. The indicator willilluminate.

3 Press the AF button to activate the RDS mode.

4 Press the g DN or f UP button to tune inthe desired RDS station.

NOTEWhen the BAND button is pressed for at least 2 secondswhile the PS (Programme Service Name) is beingdisplayed, the display shows the station frequency for 5seconds, then returns to the previous display. To show thePS (Programme Service Name) in the display, press andhold the BAND button for at least 2 seconds again.

5 Press the AF button to deactivate the RDSmode.

Recalling Preset RDS Stations


2 Press the AF button to activate the RDS mode.The display shows "AF" when the RDS mode isactivated.

3 Press the 1 through 6 buttons in which yourdesired RDS station is preset. If the presetstation's signal is weak, the unit automaticallysearches and tunes to a stronger station in theAF (Alternative Frequencies) list.

4 If the preset station and the stations in the AF listcannot be received:

The unit searches again for a station in the PI(Programme Identification) list.If there are still no stations receivable in thearea, the unit displays the frequency of thepreset station and the preset indicatordisappears.

If the signal level of the Regional (Local) stationbeing tuned becomes too weak to receive, pressthe same preset location button to tune in aRegional station in other district.

NOTEFor presetting the RDS stations, refer to the RadioOperation section. The RDS stations can be preset in theFM1, FM2 and FM3 bands only.

Receiving Traffic Information

1 Press the T.INFO button to activate the TrafficInformation mode.To cancel the Traffic information mode, press theT.INFO button again.

2 Press the g DN or f UP button to selectyour desired traffic information station. When atraffic information station is tuned in, the TPindicator lights up.

Traffic information is heard only when it is beingbroadcast. If traffic information is not beingbroadcast, the unit is set in the standby mode.When a traffic information broadcast begins, theunit automatically receives it and the displayshows "TRF-INFO" for 5 seconds, then returnsto the previous display.

When traffic information broadcast is over, theunit will automatically set in the standby mode.

NOTES• If the traffic information broadcast signal falls below a

certain level, the unit remains in the receiving modefor 1 minute. If the signal remains below a certainlevel for over 1 minute, the "T.INFO" indicator blinks.

• If you do not want to listen to the traffic informationbeing received, lightly press the T.INFO button to skipthat traffic information message. The T.INFO modewill remain in the ON position to receive the nexttraffic information message.

• If the volume level is changed while receiving trafficinformation, the changed volume level will bememorized. When traffic information is received nexttime, the volume level will be automatically adjustedto the level memorized.

• In the T.INFO mode, the SEEK tuning selects only theTP stations.

PTY (Programme Type) Tuning


2 Press the PTY button to activate the PTY mode.The Programme Type of the station beingcurrently received will be displayed for 5seconds.

• If there is no receivable PTY broadcast, "NOPTY" will be displayed for 5 seconds.

• If no RDS station can be received, the displayshows "NO PTY."

NOTEIf no button is pressed within 5 seconds after pressing thePTY button, the PTY mode will be automaticallycancelled.

3 Press the g DN and f UP buttons within 5seconds after activating the PTY mode tochoose the desired programme type while thePTY (programme type) is being displayed. Eachpress scrolls the programme type by one.

Receiving Traffic Information WhilePlaying CD or Radio

1 Press the T.INFO button repeatedly until theT.INFO indicator appears in the display.

• When a traffic information broadcast starts, theunit automatically mutes the CD player or theregular FM broadcast.

• When the traffic information broadcast finishes,the unit automatically returns to the originalsource play before the traffic informationbroadcast began.

• When traffic information stations cannot bereceived:In the tuner mode:

When the TP signal can no longer bereceived for over 1 minute, the "T.INFO"indicator blinks.

In the CD mode:When the TP signal can no longer bereceived, the traffic information station ofanother frequency will be selectedautomatically.

NOTEThe receiver is equipped with the EON (Enhanced OtherNetworks) function in order to keep track of additionalalternative frequencies to the AF list. The EON indicatorappears while an RDS EON station is being received. Ifthe station being received does not broadcast the trafficinformation, the receiver automatically tunes in therelated station that broadcasts the traffic informationwhen it occurs.

3 Press the T.INFO button to deactivate the TrafficInformation mode. The T.INFO indicatordisappears.

Priority PTY (Programme Type)

This function allows presetting of a programmetype such as music category, news, etc. You canlisten to a programme in the preset programmetype as the unit automatically gives priority to thepreset programme type when it beginsbroadcasting, and interrupts the programme youare currently listening. This feature is functionalwhen your unit is set to a mode other than the LWand MW.

Displaying the Title/Text

It is possible to display the CD title if the title hasbeen previously inputted. For details, see TitlingDiscs (see this page). Text information, such asthe disc name and the track name, will bedisplayed if playing a CD text compatible disc.

1 Press the TITLE button.The mode will change every time the button ispressed.

About "Title" and "Text"Title: With this device, it is possible to input the CD

name (see this page). This inputted name isreferred to as a "title."

Text: Text compatible CDs contain text informationsuch as the disc name and track name. Suchtext information is referred to as "text."

CD/Changer mode:

∗ 1 Displayed during playback of a disc with CDText. "NO TEXT" will be displayed when theCD contains no text data.

Erasing Disc Title

CD Text Scroll Setting

This CD player has the ability to scroll the discand track name recorded on CD-Text discs. Thescrolling feature will work with names greater than8 characters.

Inserting/Ejecting Cassette

1 Insert a cassette tape into the slot with the openside facing right.

When the cassette is loaded, the playerautomatically starts tape playback and indicates"TAPE" in the display.

2 Press the c button when you want to eject thecassette tape.

NOTES• When power is turned off or the front panel is removed,

the full-logic mechanism will automatically switch tothe PAUSE mode. This protects the tape from beingdeformed by the pinch-rollers if left for long periods.

• Auto MetalWhen a metal cassette tape is inserted, the playerautomatically adjusts to the equalization for metal orany other high bias tape for optimum sound.The display shows "MTL."

Normal Play and Pause

1 Insert a cassette (or press the source button toswitch from the tuner or CD Changer mode if acassette is already inside the tape player).The player begins playback. The display shows"TAPE" and " or " during tape playback toshow the tape side being played. 3 Press the T.S.M. button to play the selected disc.The unit will automatically search for the discand begin play.

4 Press the T.S.M. button for at least 2 seconds tocancel the disc searching mode.

NOTEThis function cannot be performed when using a multi-changer switching device.

Multi-Changer Selection

Alpine's Ai-NET system will support up to 6 CDChangers. When operating two or more changers,the KCA-400C (Multi-Changer Switching device)must be used. If you use 1 Switching device, youcan connect up to 4 CD Changers. If you use 2Switching devices, you can connect up to 6 CDChangers. When using KCA-410C (Versatile LinkTerminal), you can connect two changers and twoexternal outputs (AUX).

1 Press the SOURCE button to activate the CDChanger mode.

Alternatively, press the SOURCE button on theRemote Control (RUE-4187) to activate the CDChanger mode. Proceed to Step 3 below toselect the desired CD Changer.

2 Press the BAND button or the RUE-4187 toactivate the CD Changer Selection mode.

- Make sure the tuner is in the DX mode.• If the area you are in is a primary signal area, the

antenna may not be grounded and connected properly.- Check your antenna connections; make sure the

antenna is properly grounded at its mounting location.• The antenna may not be the proper length.

- Make sure the antenna is fully extended; if broken,replace the antenna with a new one.

DO NOT SPLICE INTO ELECTRICAL CABLES.Never cut away cable insulation to supply power to otherequipment. Doing so will exceed the current carryingcapacity of the wire and result in fire or electric shock.

DO NOT DAMAGE PIPE OR WIRING WHENDRILLING HOLES.When drilling holes in the chassis for installation, takeprecautions so as not to contact, damage or obstruct pipes,fuel lines, tanks or electrical wiring. Failure to take suchprecautions may result in fire.

DO NOT USE BOLTS OR NUTS IN THE BRAKE ORSTEERING SYSTEMS TO MAKE GROUNDCONNECTIONS.Bolts or nuts used for the brake or steering systems (orany other safety-related system), or tanks should NEVERbe used for installations or ground connections. Usingsuch parts could disable control of the vehicle and causefire etc.

USE SPECIFIED ACCESSORY PARTS AND INSTALLTHEM SECURELY.Be sure to use only the specified accessory parts. Use ofother than designated parts may damage this unitinternally or may not securely install the unit in place.This may cause parts to become loose resulting in hazardsor product failure.

ARRANGE THE WIRING SO IT IS NOT CRIMPED ORPINCHED BY A SHARP METAL EDGE.Route the cables and wiring away from moving parts (likethe seat rails) or sharp or pointed edges. This will preventcrimping and damage to the wiring. If wiring passesthrough a hole in metal, use a rubber grommet to preventthe wire's insulation from being cut by the metal edge ofthe hole.

DO NOT INSTALL IN LOCATIONS WITH HIGHMOISTURE OR DUST.Avoid installing the unit in locations with high incidenceof moisture or dust. Moisture or dust that penetrates intothis unit may result in product failure.

Precautions

• Be sure to disconnect the cable from the (–) battery postbefore installing your CDA-7876RB/CDA-7873R/TDA-7588RB/TDA-7587R. This will reduce anychance of damage to the unit in case of a short-circuit.

• Be sure to connect the colour coded leads according tothe diagram. Incorrect connections may cause the unitto malfunction or damage to the vehicle's electricalsystem.

• When making connections to the vehicle's electricalsystem, be aware of the factory installed components(e.g. on-board computer). Do not tap into these leads toprovide power for this unit. When connecting the CDA-7876RB/CDA-7873R/TDA-7588RB/TDA-7587R to thefuse box, make sure the fuse for the intended circuit ofthe CDA-7876RB/CDA-7873R/TDA-7588RB/TDA-7587R has the appropriate amperage. Failure to do somay result in damage to the unit and/or the vehicle.When in doubt, consult your ALPINE dealer.

• The CDA-7876RB/CDA-7873R/TDA-7588RB/TDA-7587R uses female RCA-type jacks for connection toother units (e.g. amplifier) having RCA connectors. Youmay need an adaptor to connect other units. If so, pleasecontact your authorized ALPINE dealer for assistance.

• Be sure to connect the speaker (–) leads to the speaker(–) terminal. Never connect left and right channelspeaker cables to each other or to the vehicle body.

IMPORTANTPlease record the serial number of your unit in thespace provided below and keep it as a permanentrecord. The serial number plate is located on thebottom of the unit.

Installation

CautionWhen you install this unit in your car, do not removethe Detachable Front Panel.If the Detachable Front Panel is removed duringinstallation, you might press too hard and warp themetal plate that holds it in place.

Slide mounting sleeve from main unit (see"Removal" on this page). Slide the mountingsleeve into the dashboard.

When your vehicle has the Bracket, mount thelong hex bolt onto the rear panel of the CDA-7876RB/CDA-7873R/TDA-7588RB/TDA-7587Rand put the Rubber Cap on the hex bolt. If yourvehicle does not have the Mounting Support,reinforce the head unit with the metal mountingstrap (not supplied). Connect all the leads of theCDA-7876RB/CDA-7873R/TDA-7588RB/TDA-7587R according to details described in theCONNECTION section.

NOTEFor the screw *, provide a proper screw to the chassisinstalling location.

3 Slide the CDA-7876RB/CDA-7873R/TDA-7588RB/TDA-7587R into the dashboard. Whenthe unit is in place, make sure the locking pinsare fully seated in the down position. This can bedone by pressing firmly in on the unit whilepushing the locking pin down with a smallscrewdriver. This ensures that the unit is properlylocked and will not accidentally come out fromthe dashboard. Install the Detachable FrontPanel.

Removal1 Remove the detachable front panel.2 Use a small screwdriver (or similar tool) to push

the locking pins to the "up" position (see abovedrawing). As each pin is unlocked, gently pullout on the unit to make sure it does not re-lockbefore unlocking the second pin.

3 Pull the unit out, keeping it unlocked as you do so.

1 Antenna ReceptacleConnect to the supplied ISO antenna convertor plug.

2 Audio Interrupt In Lead (Pink/Black)Connect this lead to the Audio Interface output of acellular phone which provides ground shorting whena call is received.
