Alphabet Activities: Compiled by Briana Rogers Disappearing Alphabet: Print the templates (appendix A) and cut the cards out. Print out worksheet one per child. (Appendix B) Divide children into groups of 5-7. Each group gets a set of cards. Shuffle them and place them upside down on the table. Children take turns drawing a card and then checking off the appropriate letter on the worksheet . The player with all the letters checked off first wins. Make it harder give them uppercase letters from worksheet and lowercase cards. ABC Chains: Supplies Construction Paper in many colors Scissor Glue Stick Old Magazines or Newspaper Circulars ABC from appendix Instructions: Cut construction paper into 1-1/2" strips. Staple or glue 26 strips into a paper chain. Print the letters from appendix. Cut out. Glue one to each chain in alphabetical order. Find pictures in old magazines or circulars to represent the letters of the alphabet. Cut out. Glue to the link.

Try making other rubbings in the background of your picture using other objects. For younger kids you can do all the tracing templates and cutting; older kids can do this for themselves. Age Guideline: 3 Years and Up Time Required: 20 minutes (Does not include drying time)The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.Materials Needed: Course Sandpaper Plain Paper Old Crayon Pieces Without Labels ScissorsInstructions:BEFORE CLASS: Cut large letters out of the sandpaper. You could use the letters from disappearing alphabet as a stencil.Place the letters, rough side up, on your work surface (desks),Have students place the plain white paper over them. Now make a crayon rubbing of each letter by gently rubbing the side of the crayon on the paper that is over the sandpaper letters. You should be able to see the letters show up with a nice texture design on your paper. If you want a challenge, why not try writing your name or spelling out other words.Variation: have students rub sections of the alphabet.

Alphabet Coconut Tree

Make a lovely coconut tree with alphabet letters for the leaves. Spell some words or just stick the letters for fun.

Materials Construction paper Alphabet letters (stickers or cut your own from craft foam or colored paper) Scissors Glue stick Crayons

Steps1.Plan how big you want your coconut tree to be and cut out the appropriate size of background paper.

2.Draw a coconut tree trunk on brown construction paper. Also draw 5 curved pieces for the branches.

3.Cut out the tree trunk and branches.

4.Use brown or black crayon to draw horizontal lines on the tree trunk.

5.Glue the tree trunk at the center of your picture. Glue the 5 branches in a fan-like fashion, just like a real coconut tree.

6.Make your own alphabet letters by cutting them out from green craft foam or paper. You can also use pre-cut craft foam or sticker letters or print out these lower case and upper case letter templates.

7.Make some different-colored letter O's to make the coconuts.

8.Glue the letter O's on the top portion of the tree trunk.

9.Glue the alphabet letters along the branches to make the coconut leaves. Spell a word on each branch or just stick the letters for fun.

10.Draw details for your picture with crayons or markers. Make grass at the bottom, you can make a sun, flowers, or even butterflies. Use your imagination and add any detail you like.

GAMES:You can use the cards from Disappearing Alphabet as flashcards.Alphabet Writing RelayDivide and line up the students into two teams. Divide the board into two halves and have one student from each team run to the board, write 'A', then run to the back of the line. The next student writes 'B', etc. The first team to finish wins.

Alphabet Erase relayAs 'Alphabet Writing Relay', but this time, write the alphabet on each half of the board and have each team race to erase the letters in order.

Alphabet SculpturesDivide the students into teams and call out a letter of the alphabet. Award a point to the first team that can form the letter with their bodies.

Alphabet SoupGive each student an alphabet flashcard and have them skip around the room to the 'ABC Song'. Stop the tape at random and have the students rush to line up in order, e.g. A-K.Balloon TossHave the students stand in a circle. Toss a balloon to one student and elicit vocabulary or a structure from that student. They must be able to tap the balloon in the air without missing the vocabulary or structure E.g. S1: "My name's Miki. What's your name?" (tap) "My name's Hiro. What's your name?" (tap). Alphabet variation: Have them say the alphabet A (tap) B(tap)Beat The ClockTime the students as they race to put alphabet, days of the week, or month flashcards in order. Have them try again to see if they can beat their fastest time.

BingoBingo can be used with any topic. Blank Bingo sheets can be used, and students can write of draw randomly in the boxes. The winner is the first student to cross out all the numbers/letters etc. on the sheet.Flash Card WalkArrange the flashcards in a big circle. Play some music while the students walk around the circle. When the music stops, call out a flashcard, and the student standing next to the flashcard wins.Grab It Relay / Race to TouchLay the flashcards on the floor at one end of the room, and have the students line up in teams at the other end of the room. Call out a flashcard and have the first person in each team race to grab the card. Those students then go to the back and the next students race to grab the next flashcard the teacher calls.
