As we welcome the New Decade, we find ourselves lucky to have many new enthusiastic potters joining our much loved group. A welcoming buzz meets us on Tuesdays, with our dedicated hard working volunteers already unloading and repacking kilns that are churning out bisque and glaze wear!

2019 closed with fabulous Christmas Get-togethers, including a delicious festive lunch at Caloundra’s 3 Bar & Grill, organised by Giovanna. A big thank you to all members who worked hard on clean ups, and the many unseen activities, such as time consuming financials (Mary, Deb and Helen). Over the year, members provided delicious morning teas and supported the CACA Makers’ Markets which are a great opportunity to present and sell our pottery. On Tuesday 4 February 2020 our AGM welcomed members to new roles, and thanked volunteers including Vicki who provided generous Team Leadership. Our Kiln Masters (Sue and Bronnie) and stalwart members (Joan and Vicki) provided workshops, answers and advice. It is impossible to single out any one member when we have so many incredibly generous members.

Welcome to our new CACA Patron, Roy Henzell

Roy started working in the family business as a mail boy when he was 14. After graduating in Accountancy from Queensland University of Technology he started working at Henzells in the property management section before moving into real estate sales. Roy took the helm of the family business in 1984 when his father Bevan died. He was 29-years-old and ran the family business in partnership with his mother Judy Henzell until 1990 when he invited Garry Waters to join as a partner. In 1989, with a friendship with Roy dating back to the early 1970s, Garry joined Henzells to implement the development of Pelican Waters. A year later he became a partner. Judy retired in 1999 leaving Roy and Garry as the Henzells Agency partners.

2020 is an exciting year for Stitchers as we celebrate our 40th

anniversary. We’ve been around as long as CACA has!

In 2010 Members made a beautiful table cloth to celebrate our 30th anniversary. Each member embroidered or cross stitched a square on the table cloth. To celebrate our 40th anniversary we are again creating a tablecloth, but this time as well as embroidery & cross stitch, other techniques are included

such as applique, crochet and knitting. Our theme this year is the seaside. Our AGM was held recently. Vicki & Patsy at the Abbey

Welcome to 2020 from Caloundra Embroiderers. We recommenced our gatherings in February in that dreadful humidity. One wonders if it will ever go away!!! I do promise though, not to comment on the cooler weather. We would like to thank Happy Yarners for the water cooler. It is an absolute delight. It was a lovely afternoon catching up with lovely like minded people but also missing those who had moved further afield and not able to join us any longer. Christine is taking us in hand offering inspiration to work on an item for the display next year...yes 2021... We are joining the Textile and Fibre Artists for their Paper & Thread exhibition along with the Lace Makers. Our theme will be Art Nouveau to Art Deco. The choices are really interesting. We finished our year off with a bus trip to The Abbey followed by lunch at Sandstone Point. It was a delightful day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Our AGM is not until 20th February so we will share a photo of our new Committee in the next edition of Artifacts. The 21st February will see us off on our first bus trip for the year. We are heading off to the first Australasian Embroidery Convention at South Bank. I hope the driver has good ear phones...the excited chatter is likely to be quite loud. Today we have celebrated Joan Morrison’s 80th birthday and Vicki Morison’s birthday as well as wishing Elva Moses a very happy 89th....she was out celebrating!! It was with great sadness that our lovely Paula Corrigan lost her battle. She will be sorely missed and always loved.

Water Cooler

Thanks to Happy Yarners who have purchased a water cooler located in the entry to Kingfisher. Members are asked not to fill water jugs or water bottles from it. The plastic cups are fully recyclable.

Quilters were welcomed back to 2020 with a lovely morning tea. It’s

always good to catch up again after the Christmas break.

We didn’t have time to mention Lorraine Peterson’s ‘curved piecing’ workshop last November as it was held after the last Art-I-Facts was printed. We had a great time as usual at the workshop, learned a lot and went home with our finished work and a pair of Christmas earrings gifted by Lorraine! Thankyou Lorraine for your never-ending patience and Thankyou too Lesley Anne for your help that day.

Both groups enjoyed an end of year Christmas Function, Friday ladies enjoying a catered lunch in-house and Night Owls had a lovely night at Three Bar & Grill. A bus took members to ‘Faeries in My Garden’, a quilting shop in Shorncliffe, that was holding a sale on Australia Day. The shop was packed and had good bargains. They then went into Redcliffe for lunch and a look around. A good day was had by all. What a nice surprise to arrive at the centre today to see a water filter supplied by Happy Yarners. We continue to recruit new members especially for Night Owls, our Tuesday evening group. Thanks go to Roxanne and Amanda, our outgoing President and Vice President, who have done a wonderful job and kept us on our toes for the last two years. Vicki

Workshops: Organised by Gail Ferry, there is a whisper that Roe Gartleman, Mixed media artist from Adelaide, may be coming to Caloundra. If enough students interested to enrol, other CACA members invited if places available. A rare opportunity.

Bev Black has another Workshop coming up, alcohol inks & abstracts! Magnificent florals, colourful, challenging - Bevs' expertise, inspiring.

It was my pleasure to speak with Minh and hear the story of her most amazing life. I share it with you here:- Minh was born in Vietnam just after the end of World War II to a large but poor family. She lost her mother at aged 3 and was brought up by grandparents as part of their large family. At 11yo she went to live with an uncle and continued her schooling. Minh tells me of her efforts to learn English- she lived next door to a Catholic Church. Someone gave her a bible. She was also given a small dictionary, Minh read the bible and translated the words by using the dictionary! Whilst at school an Australian medical team visited and started giving the children English lessons at night. One of the nurses Susan Terry wrote some books about these times and Minh became a pen pal to one of her friends. This friendship continued for many years until the lady passed. This lady sent Minh copies of the Walkabout magazine and that first introduced Minh to Australia At 16 Minh was awarded an American Field Service Scholarship to study English at the Northwestern High School in Kokoma, Indiana USA. This scholarship covered , fees, books, board food and everything except airfares. “I had to work in my uncles printshop (typesetting), in a pharmacy , looking after my cousins and going to the markets I was rarely in bed before 12am and up again at 5am”

“While I was in the United States, I was invited to Washington D.C. and to the White House, to meet the President Lyndon B Johnson, Dean Ruske, and the Defence Minister Robert McNamara.” “When I returned from America and travelling back to my place, our bus was hit by a mine. All 65 people were killed and I was the only survivor. I was thrown onto a rice paddy and picked up b y 2 motorcyclists, who recognised my school uniform and so took me to my hometown.” In 1968 Minh graduated from Saigon University and started teaching English at the International High School. In 1970 Minh migrated to Australia She started teaching in Primary schools in the Darwin area in 1970. Minh was the first Vietnamese to settle in Darwin. In 1976 Minh was awarded a Commonwealth Teaching Service Scholarship to further study at Darwin Community College and graduated with a Bachelor of Education Early Childhood Education. “I lived through Cyclone Tracey in Darwin whilst living in a caravan. I cooked for the ABC crews during their time there at this disaster.” The Queen visited Darwin following the cyclone and was walking with the Mayoress Dr Ella Stack, "I was introduced to the Queen there.” In 1992 and 1993 Minh was awarded with Monash University Scholarships to study Mandarin in Nanjing, China. This was to bring back knowledge to existing teachers to start language programmes for children in Darwin. When asked what she saw as her greatest achievement Minh didn’t hesitate, “ Wherever I go I am able to make friends who are very loyal to me and I consider this a great achievement!” “I have been taught what we think, do and say all have consequences, so we need to be very judicious with what we say.” Minh came to Caloundra in 2013 and taught meditation to several large groups. She also conducted tours to Vietnam since 1997 to take teachers there.

Minh tells “When I retired I decided to meet some more people, I came to a Quilt show and met some friends and decided to learn their skills. I find people here have lots of wisdom, are very generous and friendly and are very willing to share their knowledge." When asked what she hoped to achieve Minh replied “Every year be able to sponsor 60 Vietnamese children until they finish their schooling. I do this by quilting, teaching cooking to raise funds." “I knew as an 11 year old that I would be in the U.S. by aged 16. So I have been in Vietnam to learn the hard life and so I have always been there to help people and have spent my life doing so” Minh’s story is inspirational, her achievements, her zest for life, her desire to help, her friendship to one and all make her a remarkable lady. Wow Minh are we so fortunate to be able to call you our friend here are Caloundra Arts Centre!

Firstly congratulations to the Unite, Inspire, Paint, 2020, Exhibition which heralded in the New Year.

Also a huge thanks to the Happy Yarners for providing the COLD water dispenser for use of us all. A wonderful gesture from a relatively new group, to add to the benefit of the whole centre. Again thank you all so much.

Now to our Textile Group. Our first meeting was held on Monday 10th, so we had a day of catching up, and planning our activities. We also had a demonstration of bead making using painted Tyvek, organza, taffeta, and glitzy threads. One of our clever ladies then embellished them with copper wire and beads.

We will have our AGM on the 17th February. So watch this space for the next Committee Members, whom, I am sure will lead us on more exciting, creative endeavours.

2019 ended with wonderful Christmas lunch at CACA, when everyone contributed to a fabulous spread. Ellen together with Dieter (her husband) decorated a long table for us to sit at. Thank You! Our annual ‘Secret Santa’ was used to make a contribution for those firemen fighting the bush fires. Happy Yarners are back for another year of knitting, crochet, fellowship

and fun. The new year brings new leaders Linda Buchanan and Sue Rae,

both Happy Yarners since 2018.

The people we must give a great big thanks to are Trish Thomas

and Anne Warburton for leading us through since the conception of this group. You ladies have been helpful and have guided us through many twisty encounters in our crafts. The new year has started off well with Graham and all the girls already in full swing for the year ahead. Cotton crocheted hand towels and face cloths are Graham's “go-to” crochet just at the moment. He has many lovely knee rugs already under his belt – not literally of course. His diversity in yarns and items is usually checked-up-on in each class.

We all enjoy our Monday evenings 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm together so, if you are someone who enjoys knitting or crochet, or perhaps would like to learn please give us a go. Bring a mug and a smile.

We had 14 happy, chatty ladies at our last meeting…so much to catch up on and ideas to swap and advice to be given and received. We have several new enthusiastic girls and the heat hasn’t daunted any of them. We received a lot of donated weaving books which were excess to our requirements and they magically disappeared, thank you to whomever has

made new homes for them. Donations are wonderful but sometimes we all just run out of room at the centre and our homes….definitely need another shed!! Don’t think hubby would be too happy… maybe an extra cupboard in the garage? Or maybe we should just sell more at the Fairs and Markets.

Have enclosed photos of some of our challenge creations from last years big dyeing day. More of the fibres have been spun up but some finishing touches are still in progress and some have just not found that aaahhh moment of creation.

The group finished off 2019 with an excellent workshop with Master Pastellist Christine Clark. The subject was a landscape with Poppies. Some delightful and colourful work was produced by the group. Our Christmas breakup was held at Bellvista Tavern and was an enjoyable social event to end the year. We take this opportunity to wholeheartedly thank Glenda Mills for her work, as treasurer for our group, over many years. She has retired from this position and we wish her all the best. Special thanks also to Johnathan and his team from Friday Art Group for the organisation of ‘Unite Inspire Paint 2020’. The standard of this

exhibition was exceptional and the presentation was very professional. Two of our pastel group, Bev Black and Bob Maas had sales of their work. Well done to both. We had a great turn up to our first meeting for the year in spite of the heat and humidity. Brian is already

organising workshops for the year and we appreciate his tireless work for the group. We all look forward to a productive artistic year.

North Street Makers' Markets Saturday 14th March

The Makers' Market is open from 8.30am til 1pm. The Market aims to give local artisans and makers an affordable place to show their wares and to give shoppers the awesome opportunity for a fun morning and to pick up some unique and wonderful things for themselves or as a great gift for any occasion! Many stall holders are CACA members sharing a stall site. There is room for more and we would love to have a baker or someone selling chutneys and jams. Stall sites are available for members and local residents, with no commission payable, just pay for your stall. Booking forms are available in the office.
