PRECIOUS UDOH EMERGES WINNER AT THE STAR RISING FINALE

Success and fame are derived when creativity and talent are developed. Nigeria is filled with extra-ordinary talents waiting and searching for opportunity to unfold to the world. The Star Rising Mastermind Educational Initiative was created for thispurpose. Founder, Mrs. Kay Ovia, wife of former Zenith Bank MD, Mr. Jim Ovia, created and established The Star Rising Foundation to support and mentor youth to be the best they could be.

The event provided a platform for talented Nigerian Children in high school to express themselves in the areas of dance, music and comedy and eventually get rewarded for it.

The audition which took place on November 22, 2014, brought together a total of one hundred children who were auditioned by a panel of judges that included rapper and designer, Sasha P, vocalist and ‘Nigerian Idol’ judge, Yinka Davies, and musical performer, Ikon.

Eventually, twenty eight children were selected for the competition, out of which ten proceeded to the final held at the Civic Centre, Lagos, on December 20, 2014. The event featured fantastic musical performances from Evan, winner of Nigerian Idol reality TV show. Others artistes who performed were Lynxx, DJ Cuppy and Dr. Sid. The comperes were Illrhymz, host of Nigerian Idol and radio personality, Mandy.

After an eventful and entertaining evening, the judges made their decision, selecting five children – from which young vocalist, Precious Udoh, emerged winner. She walked away with an Arik Air return ticket for three to Uyo, three hundred and fifty thousand naira (N350,000) cash prize and an Ipad.

The runner ups were also given cash and Ipads as consolation prizes. The event was proudly sponsored by The Civic Centre.

THE MIRABEL CENTRE HOLDS SEMINAR, APPOINTS GOODWILL AMBASSADORS

As part of its efforts aimed at creating awareness about rape and sexual assault in the society, Mirabel Centre presented its Goodwill Ambassadors during an event which took place recently at the De Renaissance Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

The Mirabel Ambassadors are distinguished personalities in their respective professions. They include Editor of Allure Vanguard, Mrs. Remmy Diagbare; on-air radio personality Wana Udobang; award winning comedian, Koffi Idowu Nuel; Nollywood actress, Bimbo

Akintola; Miss Centenary Nigeria, Queen Mbah; and, Nigerian hip-hop artiste, Ice Prince.The event began with a seminar with theme: “A Coordinated Approach to Sexual and

Gender-based Violence in Lagos State”. It featured several topics by different speakers and representatives of some organisations that deal with issues of sexual violence, punishment of offenders and rights of citizens.

In line with the theme, Managing Partner, Partnership for Justice, Mrs. Itoro Eze Anaba, in her speech gave a brief description of the organisation. “Mirabel Centre is run by a team of professionals including doctors, nurses and counsellors who have been extensively trained to treat and support survivors of sexual assault.

“The goal of this non-governmental organisation is to provide holistic, quality support to survivors of sexual assault in a compassionate and caring manner; where individual specific needs are met and their rights to make decisions on how to address those needs are respected and met,” she said.

She also expressed her gratitude to the ambassadors who took time out their busy schedule to support the organisation by being role models to people in the society.

“All the ambassadors are successful people in their various professions. Their duty, as ambassadors of Mirabel Centre, is to create awareness about sexual violence everywhere they go. These are persons young people look up to in the society; with them more awareness would be created at grassroots level.”

In his opening address, the representative of the Lagos State Governor, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ade Ipaye, said: “The Governor is taking several measures to ensure that rape victims fight for their rights in Lagos State. I will like to tell those perpetrating the act to desist now because we would be going after them.

“Recently, there a register of sex offenders was opened by the governor to monitor and list offenders in Lagos State. There is also need to create more awareness about young people; to help our women feel safer in the society.”

There was also an interactive session followed by gift presentation. During the interactive session, Mrs. Eze Anaba assured guests that the organisation has made plans to create awareness about sexual violence through social media platforms.
