The largemouth bass is the most popular fish in the United States. The bass reaches up to 20 pounds and is usually olive green in color with brown mottling. The largemouth bass is found all over Florida, and throughout the southern part of the United States.

Bluegill, also known as bream, are one of the most common fish found in South Florida waters. Reaching up to 10 inches in size, they have an oval-like appearance and a multi-colored pattern.

Channel Catfish eat a variety of food and spend a majority of their time scavenging lake bottoms. A population of these fish is beneficial, helping to balance a lake’s ecosystem. Catfish are easily recognizable by their “whiskers” and elongated bodies. They can attain weights of greater than 25 pounds. The “cats” are capable of gulping air from the surface when dissolved oxygen levels are low.

Grass Carp, or white Amur, are a weed eating fish species originating from Asian waters. They are commonly used as biological control agents. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, who issue permits for qualified waterway systems, regulate their stocking. Grass Carp have silvery, smooth scales and can grow to large sizes.

Mosquitofish are another beneficial species of native fish. They eat their body weight daily, consuming the larvae of mosquitos and aquatic midges. Due to its specialized diet, mosquitofish have been introduced throughout the World, especially in areas where West Nile Virus, malaria and yellow fever are prevalent. These fish are in the minnow family, reaching up to 1.5 inches.
