    Faces Pain Scale - Revised The Faces Pain Scale - Revised (FPS-R) is a self-report scale of pain intensity designed for children of age 4 years and older, and is often used in other populations and in many countries. It is scored 0 to 10. The FPS-R is available from the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) at www.iasp-pain.org/FPSR.

    It is free of charge for clinical and research use. For reproduction, modification, or commercial use, permission must be sought via that web link and a fee may be charged.

    CTEV Survey & Upcoming Education In March 2012 the NSW Congenital Talipes Equino Varus (CTEV) Network Group which comprises Physiotherapists from Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (Randwick & Westmead) and John Hunter Children’s Hospital, conducted a survey of Physiotherapists across NSW. The survey aimed to identify the following:

    Respondents’ current level of involvement in the management of clients with CTEV;

    Respondents’ current level of support and education relating to CTEV management;

    Type of support and education that respondents felt they require to provide a quality service toclients with CTEV.

    A total of 49 responses were received from Physiotherapists across NSW. Below is a summary some of the evaluation results:

    The majority of respondents (81%) worked in a paediatric ward/department;

    For the majority of respondents CTEV was a relatively small component of their clinical caseload. 74% of Physios saw less than 10 children with CTEV in the last 12 months.

    Despite this, almost all respondents identified that they would like to receive further education and support regarding the management of CTEV. Education and support was requested in the following formats:

    o Clinical Practice Guideline (51%) o E-learning module (45%) o Course/workshop (43%) o Allied Health Secondment (43%)

    In response to the above survey results, the following strategies to provide support and education for Physios regarding the management of CTEV are underway.

    Development of CTEV Clinical Guidelines will commence in the second part of 2012.

    A CTEV e-learning module has been completed with funding support from GESCHN. This will be used to complement practical training activities.

    SAVE THE DATE CTEV Workshop - Tamworth Friday 29th October

    Further details regarding this workshop will be distributed in the coming month.

    Expressions of Interest for the CHN Allied Health Secondment Program are now open. See article on page 1 for further details.

    For further information regarding any of the above survey results or education activities, please contact CHN Allied Health Educators Jenny Nicol or Sue Sims.

    Thank you to the following members of the NSW CTEV Network Group for their ongoing commitment to the education and support of Physiotherapists across NSW.

    EnableNSW: Supporting Children with Disabilities EnableNSW provides equipment (assistive technology) to children with a permanent or long term disability.Assistance is provided in the areas of communication, mobility, self-care and respiratory support. EnableNSW Children’s Equipment Pool (CEP) The CEP is an initiative aimed at providing cost effective and timely access to equipment for growing kids.

    The project is going from strength to strength with the addition of tandem strollers to the pool of mobility and bathing aids currently available.

    Challenges associated with the arrival of a new baby are heightened for parents who already care for a child with a disability and complex postural support needs.

    It is hoped that the addition of tandem strollers to the CEP in the coming months will make disability specific strollers more readily available to families facing these issues.

    What Prescribers Need to Know to Request a Tandem Stroller The prescription and provision guidelines (PPG) for strollers

    have been updated to include specific criteria relating to tandem strollers

    Weight limitations of this equipment must be considered to ensure the individual weights of the children are within the ‘safe working load’

    Please include ‘Children’s Equipment Pool’ as the supplier on your equipment request form.

    Prescription guidelines are available at: http://www.enable.health.nsw.gov.au/__documents/equipment-ppg-for-review/specialist-stroller_ppg_03-12.pdf

    Further information For more information about the Children’s Equipment Pool please contact Linda Elliott, Senior State-wide EquipmentAdvisor, on 1800 362 253 or via email: [email protected].

    Celebrating 80 years of Speech Pathology at…

    Professor Joan Arvedson A Series of Advanced Workshops in Paediatric Feeding

    Date & Topic Outline

    23rd - 24th October

    Problem-solving in Paediatric Swallowing & Feeding Day 1&2 – AUD $700 (AUD$600 early bird)

    Nutritional needs and pulmonary health always take top priority in therapeutic decision-making. This workshop will guide participants through the critical decision-making and problem-solving processes involved in assessment and management of feeding disorders in medically complex children and children with sensory issues, using an evidence-based approach, through lecture, videos, and interactive discussions. The multifactorial aspects of paediatric feeding disorders, including physiologic, sensory-motor and neurodevelopmental will be discussed in the context of health, medical and developmental factors. Participants are encouraged to submit case studies one month prior to the workshop for discussion during the course of the 2 days.

    25th October

    Facilitating Infant Feeding: NICU and Beyond Day 3 – AUD $400 (AUD$300 early bird)

    This workshop focuses on feeding issues in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with preterm and term infants. Professionals in this environment are required to have extensive knowledge about pre-natal development and disorders that can occur in utero and/or the perinatal period. The interactions of upper airway, cardiopulmonary, gastrointestinal, and neurologic systems are extraordinarily complex. All have direct bearing on anticipation and expectations for advancing oral feeding. In addition, parent/infant bonding is critical as is adequacy of nutrition and hydration. Assessment and management decision making will be discussed through lecture, video examples, and discussion with active involvement by the participants.

    26th October

    Paediatric Videofluoroscopic Swallow Studies (VFSS): Interpretation, Decision Making, and Intervention Day 4 – AUD $400 (AUD$300 early bird)

    This workshop focuses on instrumental swallow evaluations with topics to include rationale for carrying out VFSS, practise identifying anatomic landmarks, interpreting VFSS findings, and decision-making related to sensorimotor factors in the various stages of swallowing. Given current concerns about radiation exposure in light of needs to define swallow physiology, evidence-based best practices will be described and discussed. Case studies will provide participants with clinically relevant information with active participation in decision-making. Participants are encouraged to submit video examples of complex patients one month prior to the workshop.

    Please contact Gloria Tzannes ([email protected]) for a registration form. Please note that payment must be received by the 14th September to access early bird rates.

    Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale 2 – 3 August

    Wallsend Health Site The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) is a semi-structured, standardised assessment of communication, social interaction, and play. It provides a series of standardised contexts in which the child’s social, communication and repetitive, stereotyped behaviours can be observed. The Introduction to the ADOS workshop is intended for clinicians interested in using the ADOS. It provides an introduction to the ADOS as an assessment tool, and is a first step for researches in the process for establishing reliability.
