The business challengeAs a high-tech manufacturer with a global reach, Allied Motion requires a strong local presence with the ability to serve customers with demanding support requirements and to provide high delivery precision. And because the company must be able to source through its global network, an efficient supply chain plays an essential role in the business, offering a competitive edge in its market.

For several years, however, each production site at Allied Motion had its own operating practices and fragmented business systems. The company therefore faced a huge challenge: to streamline and increase overall operational efficiency.

A company-wide solution and the right consulting partner bring success Against this background, Allied Motion selected the Microsoft Dynamics AX business system to achieve its goal of a one-company solution for supporting global operations.

After initial installation of the system in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, Allied Motion realized the need to develop a global template to use in subsequent worldwide rollouts. To support them, Allied Motion selected EVRY as a partner to develop and establish the template for the defined business processes. EVRY´s industry expertise in Supply chain management and deep ERP experience enable EVRY to deliver a template with high Business process focus, so Allied Motion where able to meet project milestones as well as long-term business objectives.

“When developing our common template for im-plementing AX, EVRY offered a very well thought-out working model. They also helped us get the full benefit of Dordrecht’s experience of this process. What’s good? What needs to be developed? Which workflows do we need to manage in AX and how? In this project, EVRY also had a structured way of anchoring solutions and templates with users,” says Erik Nugteren, European controller at Allied Motion.

The template consisted of business processes descriptions, documentation, setup in Dynamics AX and documentation for testing. As a result, Allied Motion and EVRY brought harmonization, standardization and reusability to processes and practices across the organization.

A standardized solution helps you stay on scheduleThe first site for the template rollout was Stockholm, Sweden. Also the facilities in Changzhou (China) and Amherst (USA) are live after using the template rollout. When the rollouts began, the application consultants could use the configurations from the template, which were also used to present the processes. This both reduced the configuration time and ensured good set-up quality. For data migration, EVRY created a separate template that delivered high-quality imported data and could also be reused. Training with super-users and testing were both based on process charts, resulting in major time savings when creating test cases and work descriptions.

Better visibility across the business, anytime and anywhere in the world“With this common template, we have gained a really good understanding of how we need to work in AX and how this business system should be implemented throughout the whole group. In Stockholm, the go-live was a success – there were no disruptions, and it kept to the schedule and the budget in an exemplary manner. One important point to mention is that, as far as possible, we have avoided expensive, demanding customizations, and have instead worked from our own template and the system’s standard functionality,” Nugteren continues.

With a common model for the introduction and maintenance of Microsoft Dynamics AX, Allied Motion can now safely transition from many disparate local system-support structures to one cohesive, unified system – one with better potential for control, analysis and monitoring, both locally and at the group level.

– Never re-create the old system in the new one. Instead, take a fresh approach and get help where needed.

– If a template has been developed, stick to it. Don’t allow special local solutions unless absolutely necessary.
