BOX 7272, KAMPALA Tel. +256 - 414 -345688 Website: www.ahpc.ug REGISTRATION OF MEDICAL LABORATORIES The Allied Health Professionals Council (AHPC) was established by Allied Health Professionals Act Cap. 268 to regulate, supervise and control the training, practice and other related matters of Allied Health Professionals in Uganda. The registration of medical laboratories is a regulatory requirement pursuant to the authority conferred upon AHPC under section 29 of the Act which is intended to provide Ugandans with quality health laboratory services by guaranteeing accurate and reliable diagnosis which is a cornerstone of disease management and prevention. In consultation with Ministry of Health, Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council, Central Public Health Laboratories, Medical Laboratory Technology Board, Uganda Medical Laboratory Technology Association, Private Sector Laboratory Operators’ Representatives among other stakeholders and in accordance with the Uganda National Health Laboratory Services Policy, 2009, The AHPC shall with effect from 1 st August 2013 start registration of all Public, Private Not For Profit t (PNFP), Private and NGO or Research Medical Laboratories which will operate during the calendar year 2014. All supervisors of medical laboratories and other laboratory practitioners must be registered and in possession of a current annual practicing license from AHPC. However, supervisors of standalone/reference laboratories must have four (4) years of professional experience as required by AHP Act. The medical laboratories must therefore be registered to operate by 31 st March 2014 and any laboratory found operating without registration after the above date shall be closed in accordance with the law. All practitioners and the general public are further informed that private medical laboratories within health facilities will only be registered if the health facility has a valid operating license issued by the relevant health professional council.
