Each year the Alliance meets at different locations around the country to reconnect and share ideas. Conference 2014

will be just a bit different.

Healthy Smiles from the StartThe Alliance of the ADA is excited to announce that Healthy Smiles from the Start, a suite of patient education materials, developed by the American Dental Association, to help new parents understand the importance of oral health for pregnant women and babies is now available to Alliance members.

Early childhood cavities is a significant public health problem — one-third of children aged 3 to 5 years have a cavity in at least one tooth. Did you know that the bacteria that causes cavities is an infectious disease that can be transmitted from mother to baby soon after the first baby teeth appear? Research shows that when a mom’s mouth is healthy, her baby’s mouth is more likely to be healthy too. That’s why it’s important for new parents to learn mouth healthy habits right from the start.

Your Healthy Smiles from the Start kit includes a DVD, 100 brochures in En-glish, 40 brochures in Spanish, samples of a one-page handout and quiz, and a postage-paid survey. On the DVD, you’ll find the following instructional mate-rials:

• Video in English and Spanish• One-page handout with dental care tips in PDF format to reprint the handout • for your patients• One-page quiz in PDF format to reprint the quiz for use in your classes• Powerpoint presentation.

You can also download the materials at Allianceada.org/Healthy-Smiles-from-the-Start.php. Our goal with Healthy Smiles from the Start is simply to educate as many new parents as possible about the importance of dental health. The materials provided may be reproduced to meet your educational needs.

We ask you to take a few minutes to complete the postage-paid survey. This will help us to better understand your educational needs and improve the materials for future educators.

Please take a moment to get famil-iar with the “Healthy Smiles from the Start” tool kit. Preview the video. Once you see it, it’s easy to be excited about delivering this tool kit! If you run out, all materials can be downloaded at MouthHealthy.org/PrenatalToolkit

Begin by locating a Facility: Re-search on line or by Yellow Pages to find a Public Health, Hospital Birthing Center or Prenatal Facility near you. As a Dental Spouse, you may have contacts in your Medical Community. If not, here are some tips on how to approach a facility that offers Patient Education for Pregnant Women.

DO NOT approach a business without first making contact. Make a phone call and ask to speak to the “Director” or person in charge of Patient Educa-tion. It’s important to reach the head of the department. If you are unable to reach the director by phone, try to email them.

Introduce yourself as the Spouse of a local Dentist and a member of the Alliance of the American Dental As-sociation. Explain that you would like to deliver a FREE gift - an Oral Health Education toolkit that was produced professionally by the American Dental Association. Also let them know that the kit contains a four minute video as well as educational materials that may be reproduced.

Make an appointment to hand deliver the “Healthy Smiles from the Start” toolkit in person. It must get in the hands of the Director. Do not deliver to any other person.

Let the Director know:

1. You are Not selling anything. This is a FREE Gift.

2. The Toolkit is professional education developed by the American Dental As-sociation.

3. All materials are printable and in-tended to be shared.

4. You will follow up with a phone call or email to see how the program is go-ing and encourage them to submit the educator survey.

The benefits of good dental health begin well before your baby is born so get an early start on a lifetime of healthy smiles by taking good care of your own mouth now.

• Brush for two minutes, twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss every day.

• Eat healthy foods and follow your physician’s advice about diet.

• When you need a snack, choose foods that are low in sugar and nutritious, such as raw fruits and vegetables, yogurt, or cheese.

• Visit your dentist. For most women, routine dental visits are safe during pregnancy.

• Tell your dentist that you are pregnant, about any changes you have noticed in your dental health and about any medications you are taking.

• Your dentist may recommend using a mouth rinse to help control plaque, a sticky substance on your teeth that contains bacteria and can cause gum disease.

• If you are vomiting frequently, try rinsing your mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with water instead of brushing your teeth directly after vomiting. When stomach acids repeatedly come into contact with teeth, it can cause tooth enamel to wear away.

• Drink plenty of water that contains fluoride.

For Baby: It’s Never Too Soon to Start Caring for Your Baby’s Dental HealthA baby’s 20 primary (baby) teeth are already present in the jaw at birth and usually begin coming through the gums around 4 to 6 months of age. Most children have a full set of 20 primary teeth by the time they are 3 years old. Tooth decay is the most frequent childhood disease, but it’s also very preventable. The most common cause of tooth decay in young children is frequent, prolonged exposure of the teeth to sugary drinks. Here are some tips to avoid tooth decay:

• Put only plain water, formula, milk or breast milk in bottles. Avoid filling bottles with liquids such as sweet-ened water, fruit juice or soft drinks.

• Never put your baby to bed with a bottle. Even when it’s breast milk or formula, it can still decay teeth.

• Use clean pacifiers — don’t dip them in sugar or honey. • Try not to share saliva with the baby by using the same

spoon or licking a pacifier to clean it. Tooth decay can begin with cavity-causing bacteria being passed from the mother to the baby.

• Keep your baby’s gums and teeth clean.

2013 was a fantastic year of growth for the Alliance.

In just one short year, the Alli-ance was able to redesign their bylaws, usher in the first ever Leadership Council, donate thousands of oral health sup-plies and create a new infant dental health program! As we take on a new year of challenges and adventure, let’s take a look back at all we’ve accomplished.

This Conference, held in Branson, MO, had a spectacular line up of fun and educational opportunities!

A huge thank you to Joan Lawrence and her team from Indiana for putting on an amazing Conference! The theme was “a Conference 4 U - Unique, Up-lifting, Unifying and Unforgettable.”

UniqUe: The event opened with a bang! Red, Hot... and Blue [1] gave us a Branson style show with a medley of songs through the decades.

Uplifting: The Alliance mission fo-cuses heavily on promoting the oral health of the public and this gather-ing was no different. Members came together and donated many personal care items to The Caring People, an organization that offers a kind commu-nity for single mothers and gets them back into the work force.

The Foundation for Dental Health Education (FDHE) held their Annual Silent Auction, raising approximately $1900 for Dental Health Education projects in 2014.

Friday morning we heard an encour-aging message from KHOZ Radio personality, Steve Willoughby [2] on “Branson’s Past - Your Future.”

Unifying: Special events like the Beu-lah K Spencer Awards Gala and the ADPAC sponsored breakfast bring friends together in a shared experi-ence. Members from Texas gather around Beulah K Spencer winner April Cobb as they celebrate her award [3].

Unforgettable: Branson, MO was a fantastic and unique location for the Alliance to meet that will not soon be forgotten. Members participate in the singing of YMCA lead by Red, Hot... and Blue during the Welcome Recep-tion [4]. g

This fantastic game encourages kids to brush for two minutes, twice a day through an interactive fairy tale king-dom adventure! The Ad Council and the Partnership for Healthy Mouths, Healthy Lives have released a new, free mobile gaming app, Toothsavers, in an effort to motivate parents and caregiv-ers to take action to reduce their chil-dren’s risk of oral disease. This inter-active game makes toothbrushing fun by encouraging kids to save friendly fairy tale characters from the evil, cav-ity-creating sorceress who cast a wick-ed tooth-rotting spell on the kingdom.

EngageIn 2013, ADPAC made two very import-ant updates.

First, ADPAC expanded their member-ship levels to include a Diamond level - and second, the ADA changed their action alert email system from Capwiz to Engage.

“As dentists, Alliance members and concerned citizens we have a voice in the political arena and we need to ex-ercise this right as one united voice for dentistry. We can do this by answering and sending on our Legislative alerts,” said Carol Reitz, AADA ADPAC Rep-resentative. “The more emails on an issue a legislator receives from his or her constituents the more they realize the importance of this issue. We are the Dental Team and it is important for both dentists and spouses to answer these alerts as well as update email address changes.”
