EDITORIAL

Bonjour !

A hearty thanks to all who visited the Women in Resistance exhibition this past February. The photographs were a real crowd pleaser and the launch was an exceptional event featuring powerful talks from our guests of honour.

As part of this year’s Francophonie celebrations, Alliance Française welcomes artist Hawa. Based in France, this French/Senegalese/Burkinabese singer whose music spans Soul, Folk and even Rock, will be part of our next Barazani event. Lovers of fusion in music will definitely want to see her take the stage.

We are so very pleased to announce the arrival of the very first Alliance Française of Dar es Salaam website: www.afdar.com. A long time coming, this new website is packed with plenty of helpful information about our language courses, cultural programme, library, partnerships and more.

Well known for her Street Level series, artist Sarah Markes brings us a painting exhibition called “Between the Lines”. These works are inspired by the flora and fauna of Tanzania’s Southern Highlands, with a particular focus on the ecology of Kitulo Plateau.

Another exhibition, a very different one, will feature the paintings of an artist and fashion designer who hails from Ghana but is no stranger to Tanzania.

Known for works such as his African Leaders Mural, Atsu Numadzi’s versatile approach adds a welcome variation to the local art scene.

The first edition of “Oohlala Fridays” was quite the success ! So much so that we will be holding this event once a month. On these nights, a DJ is invited to play music at “Le Bistrot” restaurant from 5:00 to 11:00 p.m. It’s the perfect complement to the breeze of the terrace, best enjoyed with a beer or a good glass of French wine to finish off the week.

As always, Alliance Francaise is constantly working on developing and designing our curriculum to best fit our students’ needs and offer quality training. We encourage all to join the growing community of French speakers in Dar es Salaam. The next session or courses runs from April to June. You can find more information on the new website. Here’s another good tip: visit our Facebook fan page and press “like” to get regular French language tips, as well as reminders of all our events and offerings.

A très bientôt,

Mitri is fifteen and lives in a Senegalese village. Like all boys his age, he plays football and dreams of Barça and of Chelsea. When a recruiting agent picks him up out, Mitri believes his chance has come. But to get seen by the great European football clubs, one has to pay. His family chips in and puts itself into debt to help him. Once in Paris, everything collapses: Mitri finds himself abandoned, without a dime in his pocket, and unable to imagine dealing with the shame should he return to his village. An odyssey which will require all his resourcefulness hence begins. But his football dream will soon catch up with him...

Le jour des corneilles 11.00amENTRANCE FREE

Saturday 8th March 2014

In a cabin of the deep of the forest, a child and his father leas a wild and hard life in utmost isolation. The child grows up fearing and admiring his father, with the ghosts haunting the forest as his only companions. Until the day he discovers the neighbouring village and meets a young girl there, Manon. At her side, he discovers that love exists. From then on he won't cease to search for the place where his father's love for him is hiding.

The running time is about 94 minutes. It was co-produced in France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Canada, directed by Jean-Christophe Dessaint, written by Amandine Taffin, and was loosely inspired by a book written in 2004 by Jean-François Beauchemin.

‘Between the Lines'by Sarah Markes

Exhibition Hall6.30pm

ENTRANCE FREE

Sarah Markes is known for her drawings and paintings depicting the architectural and cultural heritage of Dar es Salaam. Her Street Level project aimed to both raise awareness of the city’s rich heritage and inspire others to engage with its conservation.  She is now turning her attention to Tanzania’s increasingly threatened natural heritage.  Between the Lines is inspired by the flora and fauna of the Southern Highlands, with a particular focus on the afromontane grassland ecology of Kitulo Plateau. Kitulo has such a spectacular abundance of flowers that bloom throughout the wet season, it has been called ‘Bustani ya Mungu’ and even  ‘the Serengeti of Flowers’. Particularly renowned for its terrestrial orchids, the plateau is also home to several rare species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and insects. In collaboration with Tim Davenport of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), this exhibition is an artistic and scientific exploration of some of the fascinating and beautiful species of this area. It also hopes to raise awareness of this unique grassland ecosystem and the challenges faced in its conservation.

Once a month, Alliance française invites a Dj on the terrace (Le Bistrot) to put his sound between 7 and 11.00pm. Come and enjoy the sound and the breeze with a beer or a good glass of french wine. A great way to finish the week and to start the week-end. The Dj of the month: Assou Abdul

Assou got interested in electronic music at the early age of 15-16 years old when he was introduced to some of Depeche Mode early 80s work.Assou was very inspired by the late 80s house, techno, acid and rave cultures coming from Chicago, Detroit, New York and especially all that was going on in the world at that time. Assou inherited a small amount of money and decided to spend that wisely and follow his biggest dream; Being able to buy the equipment and eventually become an electronic music-producer which enabled him to be able to create his own music. Assou's journey as a dj started in 1996 at small venues in Beirut. Today he is a highly respected dj for his unique sets and ability to capture the night and make it special.

Mobile Home(France)

6.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Mobile Home, which had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, is the sort of concept that would fit easily into a Hollywood remake, though its modest levels of drama, comedy and sex would need to be heavily upped to breakout to more mainstream audiences. There is a gentle innocence to the film, but like the character’s planned journey, it never really gets going.Simon (Dupont) and Julien (Gouix) are old friends, but both currently living with their parents deep in the laid-back Belgian countryside. Simon recently moved back in with his parents after splitting with girlfriend Sylvie (Anne-Pascale Clairembourg) and leaving their flat in Lieges, while Julien never left home, staying home to look after his ill father, Luc (Jean-Paul Bonnaire) in their ramshackle farmhouse. With Luc now received, Arthur proposes that he and Julien should buy an RV – using money his parents had saved for him to buy a house – and hit the road for a grand adventure, working as seasonal workers and taking no real responsibilities in life.Plans amusing hit trouble right from the start … though at least they can argue they have started their journey.

HAWA(France)

Alliance Show Grounds7.30pm - 10.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Jennifer Hawa Zonou, simply known as Hawa, was born of a french mother and a Burkinabé/Sénégalese father. From very early on, she is exposed to afro-american music until, in her twenties she begins her musical journey, in the great tradition of Gospel. From there she will discover Soul and Hip hop in the French city of Lyon.

In 2008, she meets Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart and a great musical journey begins, soon leading to the formation of a group composed by some of the very best Jazz and Soul musicians of Lyon. Vibrant on the stage, Hawa is a spontaneous performer, with a voice that has the ability to communicate her passions and emotions to the satisfaction of the very diverse audiences she has performed for. Listen to Hawa and let her take you to Memphis in the South of the US, where Soul meets Folk and Rock. She is inspired by great masters like the Staple Singers, Isley brothers, Shirley Ann Lee, labels like Hi Records, Sun Stax and producers like Willy Mitchel, Jack Nitzche and Phil Spector.

Her first album, My little green box launched her career, garnering praise and taking her on tours and festivals throughout France. Her new album Another Tree is taking her places. And one of them is Dar-es-Salaam for the highlight of Francophonie week, Barazani, on March 26th, 2014. Unmissable.

Jafari Rashid Igomba who is the only blind member of the group was the founding member of the group was born 26 years ago. His love for music pushed to visit rehearsals of a local band (BABA TONI) in his home village “Ligama” and this is where he learned to play acoustic guitar. In the year 2000 BABA TONI band ceased performing and Jafari decided to move to Ifakara district in Morogoro region, where he met with new friends who were also interested in music. This is how IFA Band was born in 2002, and stated performing around the town.IFA is a mobile band, which moves from one place to another entertaining people whenever the agreed amount is paid in a form of fee. Basically it can be described as a street band made up by 6 young boys, and this band is their main source of income. To reach Tanzanian Business capital (Dar es Salaam) the band had to travel for almost a month from one village to another because they could not afford to pay for direct bus fare. In their street performances IFA plays a mix of Copies if demanded by the audience, However the band has composed more than 30 own songs in different styles like Rhumba, traditional, Bongo Flava and “Muziki wa Dansi” rhythms.

La Pirogue(Sénégal / France)

6.30 pmENTRANCE FREE

Baye Laye is an experienced fisherman and family man who is being forced by economic and moral pressures to reluctantly captain a refugee boat for a Dakar-based people-smuggling operation. After some tense negotiation, Baye Laye and his human cargo of around 30 souls set out from Senegal in a mood of strained optimism. Predictably, their crossing soon becomes a nightmarish ordeal. A female stowaway (Mame Astou Diallo) causes friction among the otherwise all-male group, while minor tensions simmer across ethnic and religious divisions. Passengers sicken and die, others are washed overboard in storms. A harrowing encounter with another pirogue, floating on the high seas without food or power, becomes an ominous portent. Soon Laye’s boat itself suffers a similar fate, its engines shutting down, its course pulled out into the mid Atlantic by powerful ocean currents. The vessel begins to drift - and so, alas, does the plot.

Every evening, a girl, a boy, and an old technician get together in a small movie theater. Although the theater no longer seems to be operating, it is full of wonders. The three friends invent, drawn, dress up, and become characters in any story they feel like telling during one magical night when everything is possible. There are witches and fairies, powerful kings and stable boys, werewolves and beautiful, cruel ladies, cathedrals and sequins, cities of gold and dark forests, harmonies of vast choirs and the spells of a single drum, devastating malice and triumphant innocence.

Pulp Farsi 6.30pmENTRANCE FREE

Pulp Farsi is not a documentary about politics and religion. It’s is a film about the Persian psyche! Australian filmmaker David Vee, who has been living in Tanzania since last year, spent 2 1/2 years living in the Islamic Republic of Iran as an expat. In Iran ‘the powers that be’ deem it illegal to film on the streets and this is severely enforced! Hence, to obtain his story he used a small hand-held camcorder and filmed Guerrilla Style. If there was one country, where the word dichotomy had to be used, it would be Iran. Paradoxically religion is everywhere, yet nowhere. Pulp Farsi illustrates the bizarre reality of this mystifying and polemic nation.
