Allen ISD’s Phoenix Literary Magazine Purpose: Designed as an extension of the Phoenix program, the Literary Magazine publication will include student work from Phoenix grades 9 – 12. It will highlight the very best literary efforts in the areas of critical essays, creative fiction and non-fiction, poetry, graphic design and photography. The publication will be distributed to all Phoenix classes in the spring of 2012. Submissions: To be considered for publication, submissions must be received by Monday, December 12. A completed Submission Form must accompany each individual piece of work submitted. All submissions will be subject to review and will be selected for publication by an editorial board consisting of current Phoenix students and gifted teacher sponsors. We regret that not all submissions will be selected for publication. Criteria for inclusion will involve an assessment of the text as an academically advanced literary product, creative and sophisticated development of plot, character, setting, etc., reader interest level, and appropriateness of subject matter and language. Graphics and photography will be assessed on the basis of creativity and appropriateness of the subject matter. Submission Format: Text submissions: Length is limited to 2,000 words maximum. There is no minimum word count for submissions. All submissions should be double spaced, typed in 12 pt. Times New Roman font (including titles) in a Microsoft Office 2010 Word Document format to be emailed to Ms. Hughes. Do NOT include your name on or in your work anywhere. Insert a header on every page with your student ID#. Each student’s name will be matched to their ID# with the submission form after the editorial review process has taken place. Also, real names included in your work must be changed to protect the innocent. Please submit your entries in a Microsoft Office 2010 Word Document format only. Include a hard copy, on top of the email submission, in an envelope marked with your name, current Phoenix teacher, and class period. Submissions will be received in Ms. Hughes’ room (G208). Look for the submission box inside of the classroom door. Phoenix I students may turn in submissions to Ms. Cunningham (B131) who will forward them to the high school campus.

Photography: A photographic entry must be an original black and white image, produced by a photographic process. The image should be limited to a size of 7 inches by 8.5 inches. The entry may incorporate such techniques as montage, multiple exposures, and may be manipulated conventionally or digitally. Images should demonstrate the student’s proper use of photographic techniques such as depth of field and exposure. The images may be created using various lenses, filters, and light sources.
Photographs must be submitted in print form and in electronic form as a .jpeg, .jpg or .gif format sent to Ms. Heidi Hughes [email protected]. Files submitted may not be larger than 2,048k (2Mb).
Visual Arts: Visual art entries must be an original print, drawing, painting, collage, photographic collage, metal etching or punch work, fiber work, or computer-generated artwork. Whether an entry uses a variety of techniques or a simple approach, it will be judged primarily on how well the student uses his or her artistic vision. Any art work wanting consideration for the magazine must be submitted as a black and white image in electronic form. When deciding which piece of art to submit, keep in mind that all pictures will be in black and white, so entries relying on color for presentation and appeal will not look as impressive in black and white.

Student Involvement:This publication is inherently student driven. If you are a current Phoenix student who wishes to be considered for the editorial board and can devote time to this project during the busy fall and spring semesters, you should attend the Literary Magazine meetings on Mondays during eighth period in Ms. Green’s Room – G234.
