CHARLEY KING IN TRAININGFOR ANNUAL MAINLAND VISIT
When Islanders fly to the bigisland of "Am-er-i-ca" (a Ter-ritorial expression still used)the borrow from friends accord-ing to the weather, light or heavycoats, woolen suits, mufflers, even long Johns, depending uponthe season. Most of us fly overinfrequently, some only once ina lifetime, we are so happy to beliving on Maui.
When we return to the ValleyIsle, no matter how pleasant thetrip, we talk for days about howwonderful it Is not to have free-ways, traffic on the by-ways andsay * Never again" until the nexttime we borrow some needed bitof wearing apparel.
But Charley King, Lahaina'sShell Man, at the Whaling PortCurio Shop has a system all his
own. A few weeks before he fliesaway each year to visit his motherin Indiana he goes into trainingby wearing shoes now, thatisn't to say Charley goes bare-foot he wears the biggest, broadest "go-aheads" he canfind so that his toes can wigglein comfort while he goes into along spiel about a certain rareshell.
And Charley has the rareones from all over the worldthe largest collection in Hawaii. After a nice visit with his mother(Mother's Day is May 11) Charleywill fly to Florida to greet andbargain with shell collectors anddealers from around the globe. They want Charley's beautifulHawaiian shells and he is inter-ested in the new and sometimesunidentified speciments found inrecent years. This is a growing, living and exciting hobby, forshells once lived as the colorful, intricately designed home formyriad sea creatures — excuseus, that's for Charley King to tellyou about, so let's get back toshoes.
It's almost summertime inFlorida, and until Charley readsthis in the Maui-Go-Round, hewon't know that the thing to dois take his Maui Go-Aheads rightalong with him before thistrip, his annual Safari was in thewinter months, but at this timeof year on Sanibel Island off theWest Coast of Florida, Charleymay need room for his toes towiggle as he talks about what he *knows best shells.
To The Islander:County News: Commissioner
P. A. Geraci is pondering thechoice of either rebuilding 2.7miles of Periwinkle Way on Sani-bel Island, at between $30,000and $40,000 as estimated by DeLozier, or proceeding with a$300,000 road widening and re-building project on which $25,000already has been spent in rightof way search and evaluation fees.Another $110,000 will be neededto get the right of way set for theconstruction. Most of the land isdonated, but structures are not,and some drainage and othereasement is recommended by theState Road Department.
Attorney Frank Pavese voic-ed the opinion that purchase nowwould be wise, since the land willbecome more expensive as timepasses. Scott and some othersasked if the money isn't morebadly needed in other quartersnow. Hudson said that if the rightof way is bought it is a tacit com-mitment to build.
Public Beach Access; Toresidents without a Gulf frontproperty, who wishes to go to thebeach without trespassing, thefollowing.
Seagrape Lane is a public LeeCounty road from Bay to Gulf. Theold Ferry road is public from Bayto Gulf. {Now disguised as privateon the Gulf side.) Lee County andthe taxpayers own a walkway tothe Gulf across the Colony hold-ing, and two walkways on GulfDrive not including the easementof the Rocks. Would somebodyindicate the exact spot to theChamber of Commerce that signsbe erected?
More public roads now dis-guised as private can be checkedin the Courthouse.
Could the Community Associ-ation or the Chamber of Com-merce, check and ask the Countyto maintain ALL these roads forthe benefit of ALL the residents?
The following parks are pub-lic, administered to by the LeeCounty Commissioners and theydo not include private, municipalor federal parks. Sanibel C ause-way Park, 10 acres; T u r n e rBeach Park, 25 acres; D ix ieBeach Park, 1 acre; Tarpon BayRoad Park, 1 acre.

To The Islander:I noted the letter from one of your readers in
the issue of May 22nd where he complimented theBoy Scouts and the other people who cooperatedin cleaning up the tin cans and debris along ourroads and then suggests that the Islanders do abetter job in this instance.
It has been my observation over the yearsthat it isn't the Islanders who cause the problembut the tourists and I think we have got to real-istically appreciate this.
I realize many people make their living fromtourists but the blame has got to be put where itbelongs. In fact, I can usually tell when an Island-er is walking on the beach or when a tourist isbecause the Islander is usually walking a l o n gbehind the tourist picking up his debris as hegoes along while the tourist is enjoying the beau-tiful island.

Col. H, N. Kirkman, Directorof the Department of Public Safetysaid, "Our records tell us thetime and day when most accidentsoccur, but our personal exper-
ience and observations tell usthat the defensive driver couldhave avoided most of these acci-dents."
Patrol records show that thegreatest frequency of accidentsoccurred on Friday afternoonbetween the hours of 5 p.m. and6 p.m. More fatal accidents oc-curred on Saturday night between6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Kirkman concluded by saying,"Drivers can be compared tostudents. Defensive drivers areprepared for any emergency asthe student should be prepared foran examination. If the student isnot prepared he usually fails thetest. If the driver is not preparedhe too fails, but bis failing couldbe fatal."
