THE OFFIES 2014
They are London’s Off Broadway – clever powerhouses of new talent and new writing that take the risks that commercial theatres don’t dare to take. They are not defined by location, subsidy, turnover or number of seats but are a glorious medley of odd-balls scattered across London, just as easily discovered under the proscenium arch of Theatre Royal Stratford East as tucked under a railway bridge in The Union or built into an old paint factory at The Arcola. They can even be found in no particular space at all bursting onto underground platforms and transforming public parks. In the broadest sense, this is independent theatre powered by passion rather than profit.
OffWestEnd.com (OWE) was founded by Sofie Mason and Diana Jervis-Read in 2005. In 2006 we launched a website which has promoted over 100 independent theatres across London, adopted struggling playwrights and run The Offies for the last 5 years supported by a growing army of theatre practitioners and theatre lovers who offer their time and expertise for free. OWE has formed a charitable wing, Off West End Plays & Playwrights, to launch Schoolwrights - a new scheme placing professional playwrights in urban schools to work with disadvantaged teenagers.
Our mission, working with partners such as Time Out, The Guardian and the Evening Standard, has been to establish Off West End as a destination as popular and as internationally recognised as ‘Off Broadway’ and the ‘West End’ and to encourage broader and broader swathes of the general
public to appreciate that going to your local theatre is as easy, as affordable and as natural a reflex as going to your local cinema. With the help of our supporters – our Super Clubbers, our Angels, our Offie Sponsors and now our Patron Saints – we have consistently punched above our weight and often quite beyond our reach. We owe everything to your belief in us – thank you!
OFFWESTEND.COM – A TRIUMPH OF COLLECTIVE OPTIMISM!

THE OFFIES 2014
With the help of industry heavyweights, The Offies are taking a revolutionary step forward in redefining award ceremonies by connecting the winners with ‘Patron Saints’.
This year, winners in 18 of the award categories will receive an introduction, if they wish it, to an expert from within the theatre industry who can give them specialist advice, guide their next steps and facilitate introductions to other practitioners to help progress theircareers.
The aim of The Offies has always been to reward and assist the talent essential to the future of theatre. The idea of gathering a host of Patron Saints to take the winners under their wing came from the inspired advice of Roland Smith, Artistic Director of Theatre Delicatessen, and stands in a fine tradition of patronage and mentoring that has been essential to the arts throughout history.
A huge thank you to the Patron Saints!
