One Pound Seven

Ounces after 256

Individual Hours of

Fishing

Just twenty three ounces was

the difference between

Grafham ‘A’ Team becoming

Champions in 2012 and being

overtaken by two times

winners – Rutland.

Grafham needed not less than

two points difference between

them and Rutland to take the

Championship. Rutland took

second place. Grafham were

only these few ounces better

than the Navy/Marines and

took fourth rather than fifth

place.

Had they failed to do so they

would have had equal points

with Rutland and on a count

back of total weights thro’ the

season Rutland would have

topped the Group.

I think most would agree it is

always good to have a new

name on the Association

Trophy and we congratulate

them.

Bonanza – but will it

last?

There is no doubt that

Dikerogammarus villusis, the

‘killer shrimp’ has given

anglers some magnificent

fishing on Grafham. It tends

to concentrate around the

marginal stones and gives bank

anglers as good a chance as

boat anglers.

Below is one half spooning

from one fish caught hard

against the stones in Rectory

Bay.

As with all shrimp fed fish the

trout are in superb condition

and fighting fit. For those who

eat trout their table quality is

second to none.

The shrimp population is

immense. The problem is the

future of other species –

buzzers in particular – because

these shrimp kill above their

weight and indiscriminately.

The buzzer larva population at

Grafham is almost

unbelievable. It is possibly

larger than that found on Loch

Leven in Scotland in 1989 at

32,669 per square metre. To

loose these would be a disaster,

for both the ecology of the lake

and would have a major impact

on the fishing.

25th. Anniversary

It is possible that our earliest

archives are incomplete. I am

not sure if the first season of

the AMFC was 1988 or 1989?

This would make next year, or

the year after (2014) our 25th

Anniversary.

I am sure that the first season

was the year that Grafham and

Rutland were closed because of

the Blue/Green Algae.

The first match of that season

was fished on Rutland and the

final match of that season was

due to be fished at Grafham

and had to be cancelled and

transferred (I think) to Bewl.

If anyone can remember which

year it was that the reservoirs

were closed please let me

know. It would be

embarrassing if we celebrated

25 years either too early or too

late!

The 2012 Autumn Association

Match was fished on Grafham

in excellent conditions.

Practice day had seen a strong

wind and cloud. Match day

had light winds and sun. Most

anglers expected the sun to

have a negative influence on

the fishing. In the event the

bright sun had only a marginal

effect on the catch rates.

Group One had an average of

5.1 fish per angler – Group

Two 4.3 – Group Three 5.3 and

Group Four 2.9. These figures

gave a match average of 4.8.

Any match average over 4.0

usually indicates a good, but

not ridiculously easy match.

This was the case for this

match.

Most boats headed for the

North Shore. With the area

along Church Bay to the Dam

Wall the most popular end of

the reservoir. One early

finisher cast his flies onto the

Dam Wall and caught as the

flies were pulled into the water.

A significant number of fish

were patrolling along the

margins. The Dam Wall and

the newly constructed stone

walls (to control erosion) along

most of the North Shore was

alive with shrimp. It was here

that many fish were caught –

although not exclusively on

shrimp patterns.

Those anglers who took short

drifts into the margins tended

to use floating lines and

nymphs – those who fished a

little further out used a greater

variety of lines, flies and

methods.

In the ‘hot spots’ fishing

pressure was intense and catch

rates slowed down in the

afternoon. Over a third of

those anglers who claimed a

time bonus did so by fishing

close the last hour of the

match.

Mention must be made of the

attendance at the post match

events. Almost everyone

stayed for the Presentations.
