21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confessions are heard each week on Saturday at the Church (SR #46) from 3:45pm to 4:45pm Learn more about this beautiful sacrament by visiting our website: www.allsoulssanford.org/reconciliation The Sacrament of Baptism: Call the parish office to learn the necessary requirements and make an appointment with Father Kenneth Metz to have your child baptized. Ask us about the requirements for Godparents. The Sacrament of Marriage: Getting married? Congratulations! The process of being married in the Catholic Church could take between 6 months to a year to complete. Please contact Ann Cammarata at the parish office as soon as possible after your engagement if you would like to be married at All Souls Catholic Church. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the parish office. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. Did you know that the Sacrament may be repeated if the person becomes sick again? A person should be anointed before surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the intervention. Eucharistic Ministry to the Sick and Homebound: If you are unable to attend Mass, please call the parish office so we may assist you in having a visit from one of our ministers or one of our priests. Catholic Funeral and Burial: Please call the parish office or have the funeral home director contact us to arrange the Funeral Mass and for more information about burial at All Souls Catholic Cemetery. Our Online Homilies: If you missed Mass over the weekend you may view the homily by visiting: www.allsoulssanford.org

The Sacraments

"And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church." Simon got a new name after his profession of faith. As soon as he declared to Jesus, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus renamed him with a title that means "rock." And with that name he gave Peter the mission to be a solid foundation upon which he would build his church. Not Peter's church. Not James or Paul's church. Not Martin Luther's or John Calvin's or anybody else's. This is Jesus' church, the church of Christ himself, that we call the Catholic Church. So it was Christ himself who desired to give authority in the church--"the keys to the kingdom of heaven"--to a human leader. Peter was thus established as the first pope. He exercised a special kind of headship, within the community of the apostles and the church at large, because Jesus gave him the power to do so, not because Peter claimed it for himself. And so too every pope since, right down to our Holy Father today, exercises this unique leadership within the Church. What a gift this is to us! Jesus knew well the human tendency to squabble and disagree, to argue and compete. He knew that the church would be prone to all of this because of her members, and that providing a final voice of authority, saying in effect that "the buck stops here" would be helpful for maintaining unity. As Catholics, even in spite of the differing opinions and perspectives that are manifest in the Church, we nonetheless maintain a strong sense of identity and belief thanks in large part to the papacy. Today, may we give thanks for the pope and pray for him as he strives to lead all of us closer and closer to Christ. LPI, Inc.

Sometimes when I ask one of my children about who they were with or about a classmate at school they answer me with, "You don't know them." Apparently, since I do not know him or her personally, I do not need to know the person's name. I may not know this person but I do know that he or she exists in the everyday life of one of my children. If my children don't share with me anything about their friend or classmate, I can only assume he or she has no great impact on my sons' or daughter's daily lives. Of course, sometimes the response I get is simply my teen being a typical teen. Has Jesus had a significant impact on your life? Do you know Jesus personally? If someone asked you about him what would you say? My children respond the way they do to me because they are still young and immature. However, some adults are immature as well: immature in faith. We shy away from any discussion of God in our lives and we rarely share our faith. Most days we will not be asked the question, "Who is Jesus?" But we will be in situations where we are being called to share a little bit about ourselves. If Jesus has truly changed our lives and we never seem to want to share something about him with others, they may as well assume that he has had no real impact on us. On the other hand, if we are mature disciples in Jesus Christ, I suspect that others can't help but know about the great friend we have in him. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS (Master in Theological Studies, LPI, Inc.)

Often people attend Mass at All Souls for several years, but never register. Registering here is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and to make a commitment to the life of All Souls Church. Being a registered parishioner makes the process much easier when it is time for

infant baptism, school or religious education registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals. A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings, too. Church law advises that territories or boundaries no longer limit parish registration. All Souls accepts anyone who wants to share in the life of the parish regardless of where they live. In order to register, you need to complete a registration card. These may be found in the narthex of the church or chapel, the parish office during the week or online at our parish website: www.allsoulssanford.org. Why not sign up today?

St. Augustine of Hippo Feast Day: August 28th

Born in Roman North Africa, Augustine had a Christian upbringing by his mother, St. Monica. But he led a dissolute He taught rhetoric in Carthage, Rome and Milan, where a conversion of heart led to his baptism by Bishop Ambrose in 387. He returned to North Africa and served as

bishop of Hippo for 35 years. An influential doctor of the church, Augustine battled several heresies and left numerous writings, including his still widely read "Confessions." He was very devout and charitable, too. On the wall of his room he had the following sentence written in large letters: "Here we do not speak evil of anyone." St. Augustine overcame strong heresies, practiced great poverty and supported the poor, preached very often and prayed with great fervor right up until his death. "Too late have I loved You!" he once cried to God, but with his holy life he certainly made up for the sins he committed before his conversion. His feast day is August 28th.

Have you been thinking about becoming a Catholic someday? Do you know of someone who might be interested in becoming Catholic?

Adults enter into full communion with the Catholic Church through a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults or RCIA. Those who have never been baptized look forward to the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The Baptism of those from other Christian traditions is deeply respected. In their case, preparation leads to Confirmation and Eucharist as they enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Baptized Catholics who have not yet received confirmation and First Communion may also prepare for the sacraments through this process. Father Ken Metz instructs those interested in becoming Catholic or completing their sacraments each Tuesday at 7:00pm in the TRC classroom of All Souls Catholic School. Call the parish office for more details on the RCIA and to register for these sessions. 407.322.3795

“Love is the beauty of the soul.”--St. Augustine

Father Medina invites you to celebrate St . August ine Founder ’s Day 2017!!

The Sanctuary Light in our Historic Chapel burns this week in loving memory of Marisa Medina, as requested by the Perez-Koeneke Family. May she rest in eternal peace. The Sanctuary Light at our Church burns this week in loving memory of Daisy Feliciano, as requested by the Colon Family. May she rest in eternal peace.

This year, St. Augustine is celebrating its 452nd birthday, with its annual Founder's Day Commemoration on Saturday, September 9, 2017. This will be the 452nd anniversary of the founding of the city by Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. The event includes the recreation of Menéndez's landing on September 8, 1565, as well as the Mass of Thanksgiving the Spanish celebrated soon after. Historic Florida Militia's Men of Menéndez present the 2017

Founder's Day commemoration in partnership with the Mission Nombre de Dios and the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. The landing takes place at 10:00 a.m. at the Mission, accompanied by cannon and musket salutes from the adjacent shores of the Fountain of Youth. After the landing, a Catholic Mass will be held on the Mission grounds. The reenactment of the First Thanksgiving is held at the Fountain of Youth, followed by a re-created encampment with living history demonstrations from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. St. Augustine is the oldest continuously-occupied European settlement in the continental United States. Volunteers will reenact the landing of Menéndez and his crew at the original site of the founding of the "Noble and Loyal City" on September 8, 1565. Ample, free parking is available at the Mission. Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to bring folding chairs. Admission: The event is free. Regular admission rates apply to enter the Fountain of Youth ($15 for adults, $14 for seniors ages 60 and over, $9 for children ages 6-12, and free for toddlers 5 and under). Admission to the park for St. Johns County residents (with ID) is Free. When: The landing, Mass, and First Thanksgiving will take place at the Mission beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 9, 2017. The re-created encampment will be held at the Fountain of Youth from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Where: The Mission Nombre de Dios is located at 27 Ocean Avenue in St. Augustine FL 32084. The Fountain of Youth is located at 11 Magnolia Avenue in St. Augustine FL 32084.
