Last week’s column gave a general overview of our Saint Raphael Routes/Roots of Faith journey to Greece, the Aegean isles and Turkey. Throughout our 10-day pilgrimage Oct. 7-18, I was struck by the “wonderful surprises” we discovered, and this week I’d like to discus a few more of those encounters. Anyone who has traveled in the world of the ancient Byzantine Empire knows that

icons, painted or mosaic religious images of Christ, Mary, the saints and angels, abound in that part of the world. Ever since the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), icons have

returned to become an important part of Catholic religious art, and, of course, they have been a standard, even essential feature of Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic worship for centuries. For some, icons are remote and forbidding. Their stylized images make the figures depicted seem distant, icy and uncaring. Such people are responding to an artistic sensibility that privileges realism and human emotion, and they have good reason to like art as they do. However, I have always been moved by icons and their otherworldly, ethereal and mystical sense. The figures seem idealized and unchanging because they are depicted as emblems of the heavenly world who reveal to us openings into that world through the grace and mercy of Christ and moments when God and his holy ones come to encounter us. Ever since I discovered some exquisite Russian-style icons in the Saint Basil Chapel at Saint Anselm Abbey when I was a student at the college in the early 1970s, I have loved the Byzantine approach to religious art. Seeing so many beautiful and historic icons on our pilgrimage, however, really was a wonderful surprise. Hagia Sophia was once the great cathedral in Constantinople, the church of the emperor and patriarch, and later a mosque; it is now a museum where magnificent mosaic icons have been uncovered and restored. In the apsidal dome, the figure of Mary, the Theotokos, the holy Mother of God, holding the Divine Child gazes down upon visitors. Her serene gaze invites a quiet prayer. Hagia Sophia is dedicated to Christ as Holy Wisdom, and the

icon shows how Mary truly is the Seat of Wisdom. Visitors to Hagia Sophia can climb up into the upper gallery, and here I found several icons of particular beauty. In one “deisis,” the Greek name for an icon that depicts “supplication” or “intercession” for sinful humanity, the viewer sees Christ in rather realistic tones and postures for an icon, clearly showing the impact of Renaissance realism (above). The Lord is flanked by Mary and John the Baptist, who likewise reveal both natural and spiritual qualities. Elsewhere in the upper gallery, two other large icons depict Christ and Mary flanked by different emperors and empresses presenting model churches. The Chora Church, also in Istanbul, is much smaller than Hagia Sophia. It too went from Orthodox Christian to Muslim worship after the conquest of the city in 1453, then became a museum in 1948. Dedicated to Christ the Savior and built fir st in the 5th century, the current church dates largely from the 11th century, and was originally outside the city walls of Constantinople. The word “chora” is Greek for “in the country,” or as we sometimes hear in English “in the fields.” Here, another icon of Christ the Pantocrator, or the All-Ruler, the King of the Universe, can be seen. Beautiful icons of Mary (first column, above) and the saints, including two

magnificent ones of Peter and Paul, abound in this little church. I was particularly touched by the mosaic icons depicting the life of Mary, including several with my baptismal patron, Saint Joseph. One such image was of Saint Joseph as a suitor of the Blessed Virgin. Tradition tells us that Joseph was

seen as God’s choice for Mary when his walking stick blossomed into lilies -- and the icon at the Chora Church faithfully depicts that moment. While we were on Patmos, the Greek isle to which Saint John the Evangelist, the Beloved Disciple, was exiled for a time, we saw some remarkable medieval icons in the monastic church there, as well as some astounding manuscripts in the monks’ library. Many of the icons were part of the iconostasis, or icon

wall that separates the sanctuary from the nave of the church. Meanwhile, the monks proudly display the decree of establishment of their monastery from a Byzantine emperor around the year 1,000! I noted that we have our Saint Anselm Abbey decree from Pope Pius XI on the wall outside Abbot Mark’s office from 1927. On Patmos, I was particularly thrilled by the newer mosaic depicting Saint John with his gospel and its opening, “In the beginning was the Word … .” (left) That passage is one of my favorite biblical texts. On the island of Rhodes, while I roamed about the old city and explored the medieval castle and headquarters of the Knights Templar, others in our group visited the ancient acropolis of Rhodes and the ancient Orthodox monastery church in nearby Lindos. They reported that only about a single square inch of space on the walls and ceiling of the monastic church in Rhodes is uncovered by icons. The space constitutes a symphony of color and shape -- and represents both an historical and artistic coup de grace! Pilgrimage for the Christian is all about undertaking a journey so that we may encounter Christ not only at our destinations, but also along the way, in those we meet and in ourselves. For us, the magnificent icons of the ancient and medieval Byzantine world provided the “wonderful surprises” and the “surprising wonders” that were both an impetus and a context for that encounter with the Lord! © Jerome Joseph Day, O.S.B.

We always seek to increase our group of altar servers especially for the 4 pm Saturday Vigil, 7:30 am, and 5 pm Sunday Masses. Typically, candidates are considered as soon as they reach third grade and have made their First Communion. Now is a great time to join! Older children are encouraged and welcome, too! If you are interested in training to be a server, please contact Kerri Stanley in the rectory at 623.2604. We will have a training session on Sunday, November 15 following the 9:30am Mass.

The SRP Choir is looking for some singers for the 9:30 am Mass. The choir is made up of volunteers over the age of 13 that love to sing and have fun and are dedicated to serving our Lord and parish through music. All levels of singers are

Practice is held September through June on Thursday night from 7:30-8:45 with a warm up prior to 9:30 Mass. Please contact Susan Papinsick at [email protected] for more info or come to a rehearsal and check us out.
