READING MATTERS

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to the start of a new decade, a new year and a new term! I hope you all enjoyed a peaceful and restful Christmas. The start of a new term brings new challenges and new things to look forward to. This term we have lots of wonderful reading related events planned to support and encourage our students with their reading.

Your child learnt to talk by listening to people talk. Everywhere they went, they heard words and probably repeated lots of them. Learning to read is like that. If your son or daughter sees people reading and is surrounded by books, they will naturally pick up reading skills.

Here’s how to make your home a great place to raise a reader.:

Put books on the coffee table, in the car and in their bedroom. Leave out things for them to read like magazines, newspapers even take away menus! This sends the message that reading is part of life and they will always have something to read within arm’s reach.

If your child sees people they love enjoying books, it can make them want to read too. The more we all read, the better we become. Try to encourage your son or daughter to set themselves a regular reading time. For example, every evening before tea.
