Ponder and Pray

A priest friend prays the following prayer every morning as he gets out of bed: “You are God, and I am not. Thanks be to God!” What a wonderful way to begin the day! Now, if we could only remember that truth throughout the day.

We do tend to forget who we are and what our limits are. We unknowingly slip into God mode as we try to exercise complete control over our unpredictable lives and smoothly move into Savior mode as we try to fix someone else’s. We easily forget who is truly in control and who truly has healing power.

John the Bap st models such humility as he directs a en on away from himself and to the coming Messiah. He could have easily claimed the tle for himself, but he knew his limits, and he exhorted his followers to know theirs as well. He challenged tax collectors to remain honest in their occupa on and soldiers to live with integrity. John didn’t ask them to do more, be more, or control more. Instead, he asked them to do what they’d been asked to do—no more, no less—but to do it righteously.

So on this Gaudete Sunday—this “Rejoice” Sunday—are we supposed to rejoice in our limita ons? Exactly! It is precisely within our limited human

condi on that God came to be with us as Emmanuel. It is precisely within our limited human condi on that we can experience God’s saving power and live out God’s love and mercy to others. We needn’t do more, be more, control more—we need to be exactly who we are and be that person as humbly and faithfully as possible.

“You are God, and we are not.” Thanks be to God indeed.†

What suffering, especially of others, can I

li up in prayer? How can reducing consump on and

fulfilling my responsibili es eliminate forms of human poverty?

Lord, you are generous and kind to all your people. Ins ll within me a compassionate and generous heart that I may respond to my poor sisters and brothers near and far

astra On Sunday, December 6th, 2015, nearly 600 Catholics gathered to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the first Mass in the Puyallup River Valley. The day began with a pilgrimage, where our youth ministry was joined by Fr. Steve Lantry of St. Leo’s Parish, represen ng the pilgrim priest who came to preside at the first Mass in Puyallup. The pilgrims journeyed and prayed through various historical sites in downtown Puyallup. Mass was held at Kalles Jr. High with special permission from Archbishop Sartain. In addi on to Fr. Steve Lantry of St. Leo’s, we were also joined by Sr. Maureen O’Lary of the Benedic ne Sisters of St. Placid’s Priory, represen ng the many Benedic ne religious who helped build our parish and school. The liturgy and recep on were infused with signs and symbols that evoked a sense of history and community; the liturgical vessels, the bap smal font, the music, even the altar candles. The event was also imbued with a strong sense of community, in no small part due to the many hands that came to help and par cipate in the celebra on. I am deeply grateful to the many individuals who contributed countless hours of labor in prepara on for this event: our historical team, Jan Baginski, Jim and Jan McGowan, and Be y Chipps, for their months of research and for assembling the impressive historical display; our guests, Fr. Steve Lantry and Sr. Maureen O’Lary for represen ng their communi es in our celebra on; the musicians, lectors, ushers, altar servers, Eucharis c ministers, and all other liturgical volunteers who helped make the Mass beau ful; for all who contributed to our recep on, including the Knights of Columbus, Columbie es, Funeral Ministry, and those who donated casseroles; for Susan and Jim Mania s, who helped procure coffee, and Marianne Gaines, who drove our shu le bus; for ASTRA volunteers who came in costume and added to the historical atmosphere; Kalles Jr. High and the Washington State Fairgrounds for allowing us to use their facili es; and of course, our devoted and hardworking parish staff. May God bless us with another 125 years of ministry and community.

In Christ, Fr. Michael
