School hiStoryAll Saints Episcopal School was established in 1976, when its enrollment was 118 students taught by 11 faculty members. In 1982, 20 acres were donated for a new school site and soon thereafter construction began on the All Saints’ campus. In 1983, the first building was complete and 326 students were enrolled in Pre-K through eighth grade. The school approved a significant expansion plan in 1992 that included purchasing 108 additional acres and a master plan to add educational, administrative, and athletic facilities over the next five years. In 1993, the school added a ninth grade and subsequent grades each year until a full Upper School was in place. The class of 1997 had 12 proud graduates.

All Saints earned accreditation by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) in 2008 and remains the only school in East Texas to be accredited by ISAS. The school was accepted as a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) in 2010.

All Saints endeavors to provide an academic program that prepares students for a changing world. The faculty continually evaluates the curriculum to ensure the students have a solid foundation in basic subjects, as well as educational opportunities that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. Parents and students alike express a genuine gratitude for the dedicated and nurturing faculty, whose concern and care for their students are key factors in their academic success.

As the first step of the All Saints college-preparatory sequence, the Lower School plays a vital role in the school’s success. Lower School students are challenged to become responsible and independent learners in a safe and supportive learning environment. Lower School teachers recognize each child as a unique individual with special gifts and talents, and they encourage each one to meet his or her potential through differentiated instruction. The curriculum seeks to instill a love of learning while providing a solid foundation in the fundamental areas of reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. Beyond the core subjects, Lower School enrichments include art, faith formation, media center, music, PE, Spanish, and technology. Students attend hands-on science classes and math enrichment classes weekly, programs unique to All Saints locally. Lower School recess allows students to practice valuable life skills within a community environment.

All Saints’ Intermediate and Middle School programs are designed to address the unique developmental demands of fifth through eighth grade students. These years of rapid physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development can be challenging. Strong relationships with faculty and administrators help students with the development of a positive self-image, academic confidence, and personal growth. Students are provided with increasing opportunities for independence, responsibility, and accountability. Courses emphasize a command of basic academic skills, the growth of good work habits, and the development of a student’s ability to analyze and think critically. Popular educational opportunities beyond the classroom include a seventh grade Texas history trip to Austin and San Antonio and an eighth grade trip to Washington D.C.

At All Saints, the Upper School provides a strong college preparatory program, guided by a highly qualified and committed teaching staff. In keeping with the tradition of academic excellence, the Upper School faculty challenges each student to think critically, pose questions, and seek solutions while helping students find balance in their curricular and co-curricular lives. Students are able to select from Honors classes and 16 AP courses across all disciplines. In recent years, great strides have been made in curricular offerings for Upper School students. Semester electives, fostering intellectual curiosity, are now available in Theology, English, Social Studies and Science. Technology is an integral part of the student learning experience at All Saints and all Upper School students are required to have a personal wireless device. All Saints proudly boasts 100% acceptance of its graduates into college. While the Upper School years are academically challenging and personally rewarding, All Saints graduates agree they are well prepared for life beyond All Saints.

The Learning Enrichment Center (LEC) works with students from all divisions who are capable of succeeding in the All Saints academic program but whose identified learning differences require them to approach the curriculum in different ways. Dedicated to equipping students with individual learning strategies, the LEC helps each student use his or her unique gifts to achieve success not only at All Saints but also in college, career, and beyond.

The wide selection of enrichment activities encourages participation, creativity, and a sense of shared accomplishment.

Helping students “Discover Your All” starts with the youngest learners at All Saints. Lower School students may participate in the Chess Club, Robotics Club, Ukulele Club, or compete in the Odyssey of the Mind program. Opportunities to participate in student government begin in the Middle School. Over 15 clubs exist in the Upper School, providing numerous opportunities for student growth. Whatever their passion, students are encouraged to participate in the available offerings.

All Saints offers a comprehensive arts program, which combines instruction in the visual and performing arts to enrich student lives, enhance their development, and instill confidence. The All Saints Athletic Department provides opportunities for each student to reach his or her maximum potential. Coaches strive for total excellence, not only preparing the students for physical challenges in a sport but building character, developing leaders, instilling confidence, teaching life lessons, and forming strong relationships, which positively impact students’ lives. Interscholastic athletics begins in seventh grade. Fall provides the opportunity to participate in cross-country, football, volleyball, and cheerleading. Basketball and soccer are options in the winter. In the spring, students may choose to compete in baseball, softball, golf, tennis, or track and field.

Community service is an essential part of the fabric of All Saints, encouraging students to think beyond their own needs and develop a passion for serving others. An emphasis on service learning begins in the Lower School, where each grade works closely with families to support a chosen project. Beginning in Intermediate School, students have the opportunity to participate in various programs of service, from the ASPIRES program in the eighth grade to advisory and club projects. Upper School students are required to complete 60 hours of community service before graduation. In the last four years, Upper School students have completed over 14,000 hours of community service, both on and off the All Saints campus.

All Saints has been described as having the feel of a small college campus. The school has a beautiful and well-maintained campus set in a breathtaking, heavily forested area. Although the campus is accessed from the major traffic loop in the city, immediately after entering the campus gates, visitors leave the city behind. The first building seen upon entering the campus is the new chapel (currently being constructed). The outer edges of the campus are literally encircled by a forest and bordered by a lake, outdoor learning center, and private country club. The campus contains spacious classrooms, a state-of-the-art math and science center, and stellar extra-curricular facilities, including a three-court gymnasium and turf athletic field. While all students are on one campus, each academic division is housed in its own building with some crossover for classes. One of the older buildings on the campus, the Lower School, is slated to be totally remodeled in the near future to house a 21st century educational facility for the youngest learners.

tylEr, tExASTyler is a city where families want to settle, thrive, raise a family, and remain for a lifetime. The most common accolade paid to Tyler is that it is the absolute perfectly sized city. It is big enough to have outstanding shopping, dining, entertainment, and recreational opportunities, but small enough to know your neighbors. Boasting an area-wide population of over 190,000, Tyler offers the cultural diversity, quality education, health care, and recreational opportunities of a large city with the hometown friendliness and quality of life of a small community.

Tyler offers many reasons to come visit and many more reasons to stay for a lifetime. The spring finds Tyler covered in the vivid colors created by azaleas, dogwoods, and spring flowers. The arrival of the flowers is celebrated by the annual Tyler Azalea and Spring Flowers Trail in March and April. After the azaleas peak, the roses begin their annual visit, proving that Tyler is “The Rose Capital of America.” The roses say goodbye in October with an encore performance during the Texas Rose Festival, the third weekend of October.

Tyler also boasts an active fine and performing arts community. The East Texas Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1936 and performs five major concerts per year. Tyler enjoys a first-class performing arts center on the campus of the University of Texas-Tyler. Tyler Civic Theatre, The Tyler Youth Orchestra and Tyler

Children’s School of Performing Arts offer a variety of children’s and adult productions throughout the season. Located on the campus of Tyler Junior College, the Tyler Museum of Art features a growing permanent collection of 19th and 20th century art and photography, special exhibits on loan, and educational programming for the East Texas community.

Serving as the health care center for East Texas, Tyler is home to some of medicine’s most advanced care. Tyler has four hospitals including a Level I trauma center.

Recreational activities abound in and around Tyler. There are 25 prime sporting lakes offering wonderful opportunities for fishing and boating. Golf enthusiasts will find eight clubs in the immediate area, which provide a delightful mix of private and public courses. City of Tyler also offers over 20 city parks, with playgrounds, athletic fields, walking and bicycle trails, and many more perks. Finally, Tyler State Park offers families 985 acres of woods around a beautiful spring-fed lake where residents can boat, run, bike, swim, picnic, or pitch a tent.

opportunitiES And chAllEngESThe new Head of School at All Saints will be joining a caring community that is poised for a new chapter of excellence. The school has enhanced its reputation as the academic leader in the Tyler area by remaining true to its mission, values, and traditions while embracing innovative, 21st century education. While All Saints is a vibrant, strong, and healthy school, the new Head of School will need to embrace the following opportunities and challenges.

Relationship Building

Members of the school community repeatedly mention the word “family” when describing All Saints. A continued emphasis for the future will be on strengthening relationships with faculty, parents, and students. The new Head of School will need to be a dynamic, outgoing person who will be actively involved in every aspect

of school life. The keys to successful relationships will be willingness to listen, an ability to communicate, and genuinely valuing and caring for the entire community.

Enrollment Management

Like so many schools, All Saints finds itself in a highly competitive educational market. In recent years, enrollment has fluctuated from a high of approximately 725 students to a current 650. The new Head of School will be expected to place the highest priority on positioning All Saints in the community for steady enrollment growth in the years ahead. Enhanced marketing efforts will be a key component of this effort. Helping All Saints realize its full potential will require effective communication, both internally and externally, to ensure that the value of an All Saints education is well understood.

Curriculum and Program

Academic excellence is the cornerstone of All Saints’ identity. The All Saints’ faculty will look to the new Head of School for an educational vision and a continued focus on academic excellence. Under the leadership of the new Head of School, the faculty and administration will have an opportunity to thoroughly review all programs and enrichments to ensure the School is at the forefront of 21st century learning. A plan for more effectively integrating the latest technology into instruction will be a priority. Balancing academic and extracurricular opportunities to enhance student life will be a challenge of moving the school forward.

Spiritual Emphasis

If academics are the foundation of All Saints Episcopal School, the school’s Christian values are its heart. From the school’s beginnings in the Sunday school classes at Christ Church, All Saints has been committed to nurturing the spiritual lives of its students. With the addition of a Lower School chaplain to the staff, and with the outline of the new Chapel taking shape on campus, a renewed emphasis on sharing Christian teaching and values is underway at All Saints. The new Head of School needs to exhibit Christian leadership and ensure that the school continues to nurture the heart, mind, and spirit of its students.

Finance and Development

The next Head of School will enjoy the benefits of a school that is well managed, financially sound, debt-free, and has an endowment of approximately $9,000,000. There are still financial challenges to address. Concerted efforts to match revenues and expenses with enrollment are ongoing, and examining creative ways to effectively and efficiently fundraise and budget to support the mission of the School will be critical. A new capital campaign has just kicked off that will allow the school to renovate one of its oldest buildings, the Lower School. The new Head of School will be an integral part of this campaign.
