Metal Powder Company, Thirumangalam (present turn over of Rs. 105 crores) is the pioneer and monopoly in producing metal powders in India. This was the out come of great visionaries, who have rich experience in business and educational institutions, with technological collaboration with Gunter Von Schlenk of Germany. This unit exports metal powder to more than 200 countries and has won many national and international awards. The promoters of Metal Powder Company originated the Mepco Schlenk Charities with a noble ideology of serving the society by educating the youth and catering to the technology need of the rural mass. The Charities started the Mepco Schlenk Engineering College on 17th October 1984 to impart engineering and management education primarily for a rural society.

A Suggestion box is available in the college office for receiving suggestions / complaints. Suggestion slips are available near the box for use. It is opened every Monday, or on the first working day of the week and the details of the slips are entered in a register and scrutinized by the Office Superintendent.

The Principal studies the seriousness of the suggestion / complaint and forwards to the concerned HOD for further action. The action taken is reviewed and recorded.

XI. CRITERIA AND WEIGHTAGES FOR ADMISSION

Selection to I year MCA Course is based on merit and due weightage will be given to the following. i) UG Degree Marks – 100 %

ii) TANCET Score – 100% iii) 5% preference marks will be given to students who have completed

UG degree with the branches mentioned below :

Computer Science / Computer Applications / Information Technology.

Mention the minimum level of acceptance, if any.

UG Degree with First Class.

Mention the cut-off levels of percentage & percentile scores of the candidates in the admission test for the last three years.

ANNEXUREJoint Declaration by the Parent/Guardian and the Applicant

I hereby solemnly and sincerely affirm :

1. I have gone through the Prospectus and understood the Rules and Regulations framed by the Institution.

2. That the statements made and information furnished in my son's / daughter's / ward's application as also in all the enclosures there to be submitted by him / her are true. Should it however be found that any information furnished therein is untrue in material particulars, I realise that I am liable to criminal prosecution and I also agree to the forfeiture of his/her seat in the institution.

3. That my son/daughter/ward would confirm strictly to all the rules and regulations in force now or which may be introduced in the institution hereafter and that I realise that breach of discipline and rules on my son's/daughter's/ward's part would entail summary forfeiture of his/her seat in the institution.

4. As per the University regulation I am aware that if my son/daughter/ward does not put in a minimum of 75 percent attendance during the semester, my son/daughter/ward will not be permitted to write the University Examination.

5. That I am aware that the curriculum for the various courses is not rigid and that my son/daughter/ward will follow the syllabi for the various courses in force at the time of his/her admission that any revision or modification made in the syllabi during the course of his/her study in the institution will be binding on him/her.

6. That in case of my son's/daughter's/ward's progress in studies is uniformly poor in the institution, his/her studies are liable to be terminated by the issue of Transfer Certificate.

7. That in case my son/daughter/ward becomes a scholarship holder and does not show special progress, the scholarship is liable to be cancelled and that if my son's/daughter's/ward's conduct and character are not good, it will be cancelled summarily.

8. That my son/daughter/ward is aware that breach of discipline and rules or bad conduct in academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities will also entail summary forfeiture of seat in the institution, in addition to such other proceedings that may be taken against him/her.

9. That I am aware that if my son/daughter/ward is admitted into the hostel he/she will strictly abide by the rules and regulations in force in the hostel and that any breach of discipline or rules or any unruly conduct or undesirable activities will be summarily dealt with by forfeiture of seat both in the hostel and the institution in addition to such other proceedings that may be taken against him/her.

Extra Curriculum Activities

a. Sports

The college has a very wide area to accommodate play fields for various sports and games. The facilities include a standard 400m track with 8 lanes, a sports gallery with a capacity of seating 1100 & a VIP pavilion at its centre, a multipurpose Indoor Stadium with wooden flooring and a modern gym. In the gymnasium there is a 16 station multi gym and 5 sets of individual fitness equipments and other body building and weight lifting equipments. In a separate hall, fitness equipments catering to the needs of the ladies are made available. The indoor facility is well illuminated and includes basketball court with retractable boards. A landing pit suitable for the vaulters and high jumpers has been added at a cost of Rs. 1.5 lakhs. University level, state level and TIES competitions are being often arranged with the facilities available in the college on request. Special coaching programmes are also arranged for various games.

A N.S.S. unit is functioning in the college in tune with the objective of “Personality development of students through social interaction”. The activities of the unit include regular activities in an adapted village, conducting 10 days special camps, one day camps, blood donation camps, AIDS awareness programmes and several other Socio-economic development programmes.

The objective of this scheme is 'development of personality of students through community service'. This enables the students to

• Develop among themselves a sense of social and civil responsibility.

• Apply their education in finding practical solutions to individual & community problems.

• Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.

c. Fine Arts Club

This club encourages the students to take part in various intra & intercollegiate cultural festivals. The club is financially supported by the college & World University Service Fund. Musical instruments (percussion, non-percussion & western), costumes, artificial jewels and other items are provided by the club.

A good collection of musical instruments helps students to learn, perform and win competitions. An enviable number of cups, shields and medals have been won by our students in various competitions held in different parts of India.

d. Literary Association

The objectives of this association is to motivate and guide the students to participate in the inter collegiate competitions related to Elocution, Essay writing, Quiz, Verse writing and paper presentation to improve their communication skills and talents.

e. Debate Club & Oratory Club :

Debate club headed by a faculty aims in promoting the debating skills among students. Events on Debate and lecture by experts from outside are the events frequently conducted. This club helps in winning competitions in National and International debates both technical and others.

f. Photographic Club

The main objective of Photographic club is to develop the Photographic skills of the students. An air conditioned dark room, two SLR Cameras Yashica FX3 super 2000 & Nikon FM2 with normal zoom lenses and wide angle lens, close up lens set, filters., KODAK DLR Camera, METZ flash, camera stand, etc., are available.

The club gives training for the students in handling cameras, developing, printing and enlarging of B/W films. The club library provides various books on Photography for the students. The club conducts Exhibition, Photo Contests, Video classes and Quiz competitions on Photography for students. Photographs of all our College functions are taken by our club. Color Transparencies for teaching, paper presentation, projects and publication purposes are also prepared by the club. The club members won several prizes and certificates in many State level competitions

a. ISTE students’ chapter :

The objective of the ISTE Student’s Chapter is to nurture the talents of the students, by organizing various guest lectures and coaching programmes, workshops to enable them to excel in competitive examinations and in job interviews.

This chapter regularly organizes guest lectures and training programmes in various field, which includes leadership & personality development, Basic managerial skills, public speaking, report writing etc. This chapter takes efforts, to expose students to realistic challenges of the engineering profession to make them perform better in their career.

b. The Institution of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) :

IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, is one of the world's largest professional societies actively involved in supporting and encouraging Research and Development in the disciplines of Electrical, Electronics and Communication and Computer Engineering worldwide. The IEEE sponsors more than 770 Student Branches. IEEE Student Branch in Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, was inaugurated on November 18, 1988. From the day of inception it conducts regular weekly programs and guest lectures, and rendering a novel service to create technical awareness and managerial abilities among the student community.

c. Institution of Engineers (India) – Students’ Chapters : - 7 nos

Institution of Engineers one of the biggest engineering associations in India formed an engineering student wing which is presently having 1000 branches throughout the country. The branch of the student wing is inaugurated in 21-6-2001 in Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi and presently the chapter functions effectively by conducting various events every week. The aims and objectives for which the IEI is constituted, are to promote the general advancement of Engineering and Engineering Science and their applications and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on those subjects, amongst the members and the persons attached to the Institution.

This chapter is conducting some technical sessions every week in order to improve the technical excellence of the students. This includes Invited Guest Lecture, Site Visits, Technical Competitions such as Technical Quiz, Technical Cross Words, Technical Dump Charades, Technical paper presentations, Students presentation & Faculty Lectures. Other than this, the chapter is conducting some competitions for the entire students of the college in order to make their inherent capability of students in a more effective way. Our college received the “Battacharya Award” for the Best Engineering College Activities for the year 2000-2001, 2002-2003 & 2003-2004.

d. Computer Society of India :

Computer Society of India is a premier professional body of Computer Professionals in India started in 1965. The purpose of the society is directed towards the advancement of the theory and practice of computer science, computer engineering and technology, systems science and engineering information processing and related arts and sciences. The Sivakasi Student Branch of Computer Society of India was started in 1996 in our college. It shall endeavor to: (i) Promote interchange of information in these disciplines and sub disciplines, among the specialists and between the specialists and the public. (ii) Encourage and assist the professionals engaged in these fields to maintain the integrity and competence and (iii) Foster a sense of partnership among the professionals engaged in these fields.

Management Association under the auspicious of Department of Management Studies envisages to develop and horn managerial skills in the budding managers. Every Saturday, students themselves design, conduct and adjudicate events that would foster professionalism with faculty facilitation. The events include Business Quiz, Celebrities, Extempore, Ad Zap, Case study, face to face, Best Manager, Do you have it in you. An Inter-collegiate Management Meet, EXCELSIA is being conducted every year. In 2003, 212 students from 22 Business Schools participated in five events.

f. MCA Association :

Various activities in the Association have been carried out with the true intention of eradicating the stage fear among the students thereby helps to redefine their future. Activities include Group Discussion, Mock Interviews, Technical Seminars, and Technical Quiz, Aptitude Tests. All these activities are aimed and done in such a way that it enhances Student's Knowledge and increases the Percentage of Exposure to this IT field. Seminars on Current Technologies are being conducted to update the Students' Knowledge. Through his/her active participation, the Student really gains good Personality development, thereby these activities serve as a good Career Guidance.

g. Mathematics club :

Mathematics club was inaugurated on 30.10.1996. The objective of the club is to promote more Mathematical Knowledge applicable to Engineering & Technology and Applied Sciences among students. The mathematical magazine, Mathematics world, is also being published by the Mathematics Club. The Maths club members celebrated the year 2000 the world Mathematics year, by conducting an open house Puzzles exhibition, Puzzles 2000, a unique entertainment of this kind. The department conducts the state level intercollegiate students meet, 'Exponents' for every year.

h. Science Forum :

The Science Forum attached with Physics and Chemistry departments is functioning from 1998. It is a platform to disseminate the knowledge of science and technology among the student community. A State Level Students’ Technical Symposium is being organized on the National Science Day (Feb. 28) every year. The science forum is also publishing the activities of the college as Mepco News Letter once in four months regularly.

i. IETE :

The Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) Students’ Forum was inaugurated on 15-10-2005. Shri. V. Appakutty, Chairman, IETE Chennai Centre, Director Engg., O/o the Chief Engineer, South Zone, AIR & Doordarshan, Chennai) delivered the Inaugural Lecture on “Cyber Law and Related Issues”.

j. Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) :

SAE is an organization that has setup standards in the Mechanical industries mainly in the Automobile Sector and plays a major part in designing and implementing new technologies worldwide. The SAE International was started in the year 1905. This year, 2005 SAE is celebrating the hundredth year. SAE Collegiate chapter of Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, was inaugurated on 30th January 2005. Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, collegiate branch comes under the Southern Section of India. Regularly activities are being conducted to create awareness in the student community. SAE International has also its own magazine “Automotive Engineering”, a monthly magazine which covers about the latest automotive technologies.

Teaching Learning process

1. Learning Skill development:

JOACHIM VON SCHLENK Language Lab, a dynamic learning tool helps the students to develop their language skills and oratory skills. Weaker students are identified through class response and internal test performance. They are given intensive coaching using language lab and Mathematics lab. The Mathematics lab has a number of models and equipments which enable the students to improve their logical thinking. Students are encouraged to organize a large number of seminars and symposiums which improve their organization skill and managerial skill. Apart from the curriculum, the students are given hands-on training in the emerging areas like Oracle, DB2, CISCO CCNA certification. Innovative club, Fine Arts club, Oratory club and health club are conducting a number of activities like debate, Group discussion, dance competitions, Essay writing competitions etc. Hence it is possible for the students to identify their interested area and develop their skills. The students are given ample opportunities to become an expert in their interested area. Due to this, 263 students got placed through campus interviews in the last year.

2. Modern Teaching Aids:

Interactive distance learning facility is made available to the students and staff via EDUSAT connection. On-line training is given using GUI based packages. For this purpose, each department has A/C seminar hall provided with a fixed video projector. Library is provided with on-line journals which are used for research works and

student projects. A number of E-Books are also available in the intranet for student references. All seminar halls and conference Halls are equipped with facilities like LCD projectors, overhead projectors, direct projector, slide projectors, CC TV and VCR. These facilities are effectively used by our staff members for class room lectures, laboratory classes and seminars which makes the sessions more interactive. 60% of classroom lecturers are done using over head projectors. Our college has obtained ISO 9001:2000 certification from M/s. DNV, Netherlands concentrating mainly on teaching learning process. The syllabus and Course Schedule are given by the concerned course teacher to the students in the very beginning of the semester. The topics to be covered including the reference book(s), internal mark evaluation procedure are indicated in the course plan which enables the students to plan well in advance. Due to this continual improvement procedure, the performance of the students are improved which enables to produce 370 university ranks so far.

3. Special Assignments

Intranet based tutorials, assignments and tests are given to the students. In each lab, students are asked to do mini-projects in addition to the curriculum. This gives a hands-on / practical exposure to the students. Industrial visits are arranged for the students each year. A number of technical seminars and club activities are organized to improve the skills of the students. Due to this, our college students are performing much better in their career also.
