Dear Parishioners, 1. Be Shrewd If you are shrewd and work things for your advantage, does that mean you are un-Christian? After all, we are supposed to dedicate ourselves to charity, without counting the cost. Or at least that is the usual understanding of Christianity. The Sunday readings go along with this and then contradict it. In the first reading that we encounter, God is quite offended by his people’s evil actions, just as we would expect. But in the Gospel parable we find a master rewarding his dishonest steward for cheating. What is going on? Start with God’s dissatisfaction in the First Reading. God sees that the merchants are actually going to “fix [their] scales for cheating.” Bad enough, and they also have determined to purchase poor people, to buy them and their lives, for silver or a pair of sandals. God says he will never forget what they are doing. I would not like to hear God speak any such words! Our Gospel reading portrays God quite differently. The master comes back from a trip to find that his top steward has been squandering the master’s property. Naturally he plans to fire the man, and this agrees completely with the First Reading. But then comes the curve ball. The master actually commends the steward for shrewd misdealing! If I am to be fired, the steward thinks, I had better get some friends so I will not be homeless. Since I am still steward (until I give a complete account of my dealings) I will go to each of my master’s debtors and make a deal. Give me half of what you owe and I will count it as fully paid. Why does Jesus treat this dishonest servant differently than the Father does the dishonest merchants in the First Reading? It has to be admitted that the answer is not clear, probably because our reading’s parable is followed by a number of quotes from Jesus that Luke has collected to explain it. The point Jesus seems to be making is this: yes, the steward made dishonest deals with the debt- ors. And we see that he put the master in a difficult situation: if the master denied the dishonest deals, he would have to tell his relieved debtors that no, the transactions were false and they owe their full amount again. The steward had made friends with “dishonest wealth,” and it worked. So, should we be dishonest? No. The lesson is, imitate the cleverness. Look back to the first reading. They make mon-ey selfishly by acting cleverly. Do the same when you want to act honestly. Design plans that will empower the poor but also keep out the predators. Make sure that you do not open the door to the bad people in the First Reading. They step through the loopholes you leave. “Make friends for yourselves with dishonest wealth” means find out how they do this and do the same for the sake of the good. The children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light. Doing good is wonderful. Doing good and keep-ing out evil is much better. James Joyce said that in every act of love there is the least little bit of selfishness. Is this true? Perhaps it is, except in the case of Jesus. Instead of being a hero, he died on a criminal’s cross. But it worked. God Bless You Fr Salas

Jesus in his life. This room, now the Chapel was his place of conversion.

We left Loyola and headed to Lourdes getting in on last Sunday night at 9pm. Dinner was ready on our arrival.

Last Monday, we had Mass at the grotto with the english groups present. Two Irish Groups and a group from Canada. One of the Irish Priests' was the main celebrant as one lady in his group the sister had died in Ireland and the funeral was that day so he remembered her in the Mass.

Our group had a tour of Lourdes with a local guide seeing where St. Bernadette was born, where the family lived and the local Church where she was baptised. The font is still the same one the Priest uses today. After lunch we were left to enjoy the Sanctu-ary of Lourdes.

Many of the group went to the baths and the grotto to pray. In the evening we joined about 500 pilgrims for the rosary and torch light procession. It rained on us during the procession.

Tuesday, we had our own private Mass in the main Basilica in the Chapel of St. Anne. Lorenzo Pavan who is with his mum and dad has been the altar boy at the private Masses we have had along this pil-grimage. I think he will be an altar server on our re-turn.

The rest of the day was ours to pray, to see the story of St. Bernadette and to enjoy the peace and tran-quillity of Lourdes. I think there has been some shop-ping as well as everyone is bringing back Lourdes water.

We made our own arrangements for dinner different couples had dinner in the many restaurants in Lourdes and at 9pm we joined with many pilgrims for the rosary and torchlight procession. No rain Tuesday night.

Wednesday was an early start for Barcelona. This is the end of the Marian part of the pilgrimage for us and the spiritual journey we have had during this pilgrimage.

I am sure many graces from the Lord have been re-ceived during this pilgrimage for each and everyone of us. They are blessings and miracles in themselves.

As I celebrated each Mass I prayed for all parishion-ers of All Hallows that the Lord will bless and strengthen your faith and the bonds of faith and love in your families. God Bless. Fr Bob

Dear Parishioners. We moved from Fatima to Santago de Compastella. It is the pilgrims walk and we visited the Church and the piazza which is very old but beautiful in its oldness.

We travelled to Burgos the following day and as it was the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross the group was invited to the Saturday night Mass in the Cathedral with the Archbishop and there were 5 pilgrim groups so all five Priests' concelebrated the Mass with the Archbishop and four of the Cathe-dral Priests'. They were elderly which in the travels it is evident that in Portugal and Spain they do not have many vocations.

Later in the afternoon we travelled to Loyola the birth place of St. Ignatius Loyola where we had Mass in the Chapel. It was a special privilege that we had been given as groups have Mass in the main Chapel. The Chapel was the room that Ignatius spent time recuperating from his war injuries and in this room he found Jesus and left the Army to follow

REFLECTIONFORTHEWEEK

There are moments when things go well, and one feels encouraged. There are

difficult moments, and one feels overwhelmed. But it is senseless to speak of optimism and pessimism. The only im-portant thing is to know that ‘If one works

well in a potato field, the potatoes will grow. If one works well among men, they will

grow. That is the reality. The rest is smoke’. ( Denilo Dolci)

POPE FRANCIS’ COLUMN

Pope Francis: Christians must pray for their leaders

Humility and love are indispensable traits of those who govern, while citizens, especially

if they are Catholic, cannot be indifferent to politics. That was Pope Francis’ message

during his daily Mass at Santa Marta on 16th September 2013 as he called for prayers for

those in authority.

The Gospel of the centurion who, with humility and confidence, asks for the healing of his servant; and

the letter of Saint Paul to Timothy with the invitation to pray for those who govern, inspired the Pope to

“reflect on the service of authority.” Those who govern, Pope Francis said, “have to love their people,”

because “a leader who doesn’t love, cannot govern – at best they can discipline, they can give a little bit

of order, but they can’t govern.” The Pope considered David, “how he loved his people,” so much that

after the sin of the census he asked the Lord not to punish the people, but [to punish] him. These, then,

are “the two virtues of a leader”: love for the people and humility.

“You can’t govern without loving the people and without humility! And every man, every woman who

has to take up the service of government, must ask themselves two questions: ‘Do I love my people in

order to serve them better? Am I humble and do I listen to everybody, to diverse opinions in order to

choose the best path.’ If you don’t ask those questions, your governance will not be good. The man or

woman who governs – who loves his people is a humble man or woman.”

From another point of view, Saint Paul exhorts those who are governed to lift up prayers for those who

have authority, so that they might be able to lead a calm and peaceful life. Citizens cannot be indifferent

to politics: “None of us can say, ‘I have nothing to do with this, they govern. . . .’ No, no, I am responsi-

ble for their governance, and I have to do the best so that they govern well, and I have to do my best by

participating in politics according to my ability. Politics, according to the Social Doctrine of the Church,

is one of the highest forms of charity, because it serves the common good. I cannot wash my hands, eh?

We all have to give something!”

There is a tendency, the Pope observed, to only speak ill of leaders, and to mutter about “things that

don’t go well.” “You listen to the television and they’re beating [them] up, beating [them] up; you read

the papers and their beating [them] up. . . .” He continued, “Yes, maybe the leader is a sinner, as David

was, but I have to work with my opinions, with my words, even with my corrections” because we all

have to participate for the common good. It is not true that Catholics should not meddle in politics:

“‘A good Catholic doesn’t meddle in politics.’ That’s not true. That is not a good path. A good Catholic

meddles in politics, offering the best of himself, so that those who govern can govern. But what is the

best that we can offer to those who govern? Prayer! That’s what Paul says: “Pray for all people, and for

the king and for all in authority.” “But Father, that person is wicked, he should go to hell. . . .” Pray for

him, pray for her, that they can govern well, that they can love their people, that they can serve their

people, that they can be humble.” A Christian who does not pray for those who govern is not a good

Christian! “But Father, how will I pray for that person, a person who has problems. . . .” “Pray that that

person might convert!”

So, we give the best of ourselves, our ideas, suggestions, the best, but above all the best is prayer. Let us

pray for our leaders, that they might govern well, that they might advance our homeland, might lead

our nation and even our world forward, for the sake of peace and of the common good.
