P4 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS

Welcome to the Prince of Wales Stadium for this exciting Fourth Round clash in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup. In particular welcome to the players, management, directors and supporters of Hunslet Hawks. We enjoyed some great matches against them last year and hope they’ve enjoyed their promotion to the Championship. We will be watching their progress with great interest this season.

I know our staff and players are really up for this game and we’re hoping that the magic of the cup will help deliver some excellent entertainment this afternoon. Get behind Lee and the boys and I’m sure they will deliver a great performance for you today.

We may only have a short history but the All Golds now have supporters across

the length and breadth of Britain and we now even have some who follow our progress from foreign shores as well. This may make regular attendance at the Prince of Wales a bit of a challenge but

thanks to a series of new innovations we are now able to share the matchday experience via Craig Paul Design’s outstanding www.allgoldsrugby.com. The new Matchday Centre offers minute by minute updates on each game, with Patrick Baines at the helm. Just shy of 1000 people watched the recent Skirlaugh game live on line and our audience is building for every match. Post match we have the amazing All Golds TV with highlights packages and interviews, and we have to thank Jeremy Power

and the students from the University’s TV Production course for the superb coverage they are able to generate for us.

We are committed to building the experience for all supporters and hope that you can take the time to enjoy these new media initiatives. Let’s hope we can see a few tries for the home team on the next highlights package, which should hit the website on Monday.

Enjoy the game today and we hope to see you all in the next round... #COYAG

Welcometo Hunslet Hawks this afternoon for what will hopefully be a classic ChallengeCup tie. Barry Eaton has built up a strong squad this year and they are playing well in the Championship. They have some very good individual players that I know personally and we will need to be strong in everything we do to compete. As a club we want to gain promotion over the next few years though, so games like today will show us how far we are away from that level. We were thoroughly professional in the last round against Skirlaugh, which was pleasing. We played some nice rugby and scored some great tries, with Courtney Davies grabbing the first hat-trick in All Golds history! Steve Parry wasn’t far behind

though as he became the second player to do it later in the game. Since that game we’ve added Mark Bowen from

South Newcastle (Australia) and Jamie Murphy has

joined from Newport RFC. Both will be great additions to the squad and will go straight into contention for being selected. Joe Martin is also available today after missing the Skirlaugh game. Other than that, we are just without James Walter and Rory Sharratt, who are carrying longer term injuries. Enjoy the game! Lee GreenwoodCoach University of Gloucestershire All Golds

P8 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS

The refrains of arguably the most famous and celebrated club song in Rugby League were first heard in 1892, nine years after Hunslet had been formed as a club “run by working men for working men”.

The occasion was the return to south Leeds of the team following the 21-0 victory over Leeds at Fartown, Huddersfield, in the final of the Yorkshire Rugby Union Cup (Tow’d Tin

Pot). Hundreds of supporters who had been whiling away the time, waiting for the side’s arrival, by singing songs of the day such as `Bicycle made for Two’, eventually ran out of tunes. A former sailor, who had taken part in the siege of Sevastapol during the Crimean War, burst into a Russian sea-shanty, “We’ve Swept the Seas before Boys, and So weShall Again”. The song was taken up by the crowd, and by the players, and continues to be the club song to this day. Three years later, in 1895, Hunslet were founder members of the Northern Union, losing their opening game, at Warrington (where they have never won), 5-4 when the `Great Split’ became reality. Hunslet’s decision to support the Northern Union may have been helped by the fact that their ground, Parkside, had been closed following an attack by spectators, the previous season, on a referee which led to 21 policemen being called.

The Parksiders, however, quickly became a real power. Hunslet lost to Oldham in the 1898-99 Challenge Cup Final, before winning their first major trophy in the Northern Union era by accounting for Halifax 13-3 in the 1905-06 Yorkshire Cup Final. Two seasons later, Hunslet became the first team to win All Four Cups and, in early 1909, the Athletic News reflected: “Hunslet and Leeds have met in 29 league and cup matches; Hunslet have won 20 game, and Leeds seven, the other two have been drawn. The superiority of Hunslet which these figures convey is unmistakable.” Hunslet saw off the Loiners again that March, in a Challenge Cup tie, but the Parksiders were about to hit hard times, surviving in the 1920s through a supporters’ appeal which led to them becoming known as the `Jam-Jar’ club. The team, with a young Jack Walkington at fullback, reached the Yorkshire Cup Final in 1929-

30, losing to Hull KR but the Yorkshire League was won in 1931-32, setting the agenda for a successful decade in which Widnes were beaten in the 1933-34 Challenge Cup Final, and Leeds seen off 8-2 in the 1937-38 Championship Final – played at Leeds United’s Elland Road before a 54,000 crowd. Hunslet remained a power during the 1940s and 1950s, albeit losing four Challenge Cup semi-finals, but the Parksiders were back in the limelight in 1958-59, reaching the Championship Final – only to see an early 12-4 lead turned into a 44-22 defeat by St Helens, whose recovery was inspired by a great long-range try by Tom Van Vollenhoven. The south Leeds side won the Yorkshire Cup, under player/coach Fred Ward, as a Division Two side in 1961-62, upsetting Division One favourites Hull KR at Headingley. Three years later, Hunslet played their part in the Wembley classic against Wigan, losing 20-16

with honour, before spiralling backwards as the then-directors began to focus on selling Parkside. The club folded in 1973, immediately re-emerging as New Hunslet at the Leeds Greyhound Stadium under stalwarts including the fine second row Geoff Gunney. A spell playing home games at Batley was followed by a memorable stint at Elland Road – 13,000 turning up for a Challenge Cup quarter-final

one to watch

Andy is a 29 year old half back who joins the club on a 2 year deal from Featherstone Rovers. He joined Featherstone from Widnes on loan in 2007, a deal which was then made permanent in 2008. He has scored over 100 tries for Featherstone in his career at the club and his signing is a tremendous boost as the club look to consolidate in the Championship following promotion in 2014.

Kain made 26 appearances for Rovers in 2014 scoring 12 tries and was a losing Grand Finalist as Leigh Centurions took the spoils the same day the Hawks won promotion via Golden point extra time. He was under contract with the Featherstone club for 2015 but both parties have agreed a release.

Andy Kain – half back

against Castleford in 1983 after Hull KR had been beaten in the first round. The side, under coaches David Ward and Peter Jarvis, won the Division Two title in 1986-87, and were a shade unlucky to come straight back down the followingseason. Moving to their present ground, the South Leeds Stadium, in 1995, after a stint at Bramley, Hunslet – now known as the Hawks – earned promotion to Super League in1998 by beating Dewsbury in the Northern Ford Grand Final, only to be controversially

denied their place in the top flight by the RFL. The club’s most recent success was the League 1 Championship Final last year which resulted in promotion to the Championship. Hunslet met the All Golds twice last year with each side winning away from home. The club, though, despite having lost hugely supportive chairman Grahame Lyles, has consolidated in recent years under what is in effect a supporters’ co-operative, falling in line with the founding fathers’ aim of “a club run by working men for working men.”

Brad is an aggressive prop forward who has joined the club on a 1 year contract from Batley Bulldogs. He is a former Warrington Wolves player who enjoyed great success whilst on dual registration at Barrow Raiders in 2012, his performances on dual registration earned him a permanent move to Craven Park in 2013. He was snapped up by Batley Bulldogs ahead of the 2014 season and had an impressive start to his Bulldogs career before falling out of favour and ended up on loan at York City Knights.

Brad Brennan - prop forward

Lee is a 22 year old winger who has signed a 12 month contract extension for 2014. He joined the club on a 1 year contract from Wakefield Trinity Wildcats. He was a regular performer for the Wildcats senior academy side in 2011 and is a good finisher with an eye for the try line. His pace and his illusiveness are strong points of his game and he cemented a regular place in the Hawks backline in his debut season in 2012 making 25 appearances scoring 5 tries.

In 2013 he made 21 appearances scoring 3 tries and his utility value made him a key figure featuring in the back row as well as centre and wing.

Lee Brickwood - Wing

Danny has joined the club from Batley Bulldogs on a 1 year contract. He is a 32 year old centre who played in the 2013 Championship Grand Final defeat to Sheffield Eagles and leaves the Bulldogs having started his career at Wigan; he has had 2 spells at Mount Pleasant having also appeared for both the Dewsbury Rams and Featherstone Rovers. He is a powerful three-quarter with excellent defensive capabilities with a knack for being in the right place at the right time to finish off moves. He is a major signing for the Hawks who beat off competition from several Championship clubs for his signature.

P16 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS

Less than two months before the New Zealand All Golds beat the Northern Union, here in Cheltenham, on 15 February 1908 (thereby winning the first-ever Test Series 2-1) the tourists had played arguably their toughest game of the trip.

That match, on Boxing Day, had been at Parkside, the home of south Leeds

outfit Hunslet, who that season were to become the first of only three teams (Huddersfield, in 1914-15, and Swinton, in 1927-28 are the others), to pull off the astonishing `All Four Cups’ feat of winning the Championship and the Challenge Cup, together with either the Lancashire or Yorkshire League and County Cup.

Two men – winger Billy Batten and second row Harry Wilson – played in the games at Parkside and Cheltenham, experiencing an 8-5 defeat in the international and an 11-11 draw with Hunslet, of whom the Leeds Mercury’s Flaneur observed at the close of the historic campaign: “I would pit

Hunslet against the rest of the Northern Union at Parkside, and expect them to win.”

Batten, the “Forceful Youth from Kinsley” - who was later transferred to Hull, who paid him the astronomical sum of £14 per week - was a block-busting runner with a penchant for leaping over fullbacks (a ploy copied by his son Eric, of Bradford Northern, prior to the tactic being banned) while Wilson was a key member of the fearsome Hunslet pack dubbed the `Terrible Six’, behind whom halfback and captain Albert Goldthorpe, a master tactician and a great exponent of the drop goal, wreaked havoc.

Hunslet’s standing was such that they had been given the honour of meeting and entertaining the All Golds to the north of England. The Yorkshire Post reported: “There was a tremendous crowd in City Square. The Hunslet Club had driven to the railway station in a decorated char-a-banc, which bore the emblem, `Hunslet welcome the New Zealand team’. When the players appeared the crowd burst into tremendous cheering, which continued until the men got into their char-a-banc. Then Wright, the New Zealand captain, called for `three cheers for the people of Leeds’, which were followed by the stirring Maori war cry and further cheering. The players were escorted to the Grand Central Hotel by the Hunslet char-a-banc and Northern Union officials in carriages,

together with the still-cheering crowd. The crush was so dense in Boar Lane

and Briggate as to cause a stoppage of all traffic. Outside the hotel the team were again prevailed upon

to give a rendition of the Maori war cry, while as they made their way into the hotel they were greeted by further cheering and the strains of `God Save the King’. It was a stirring scene.”

When the teams met again – on the pitch, this time - Wilson denied the All Golds victory with a late try which Goldthorpe, who had already kicked four goals, was unable to convert. New Zealand, who had led 9-0 at half-time, closed with a try and a goal by Edgar Wrigley and three goals by the legendary Dally Messenger, who was on the opposite wing to another immortal, Lance Todd.

PARKSIDE AND EXPECT THEM

TO WIN”

It is with great pleasure that I get to welcome the players, guests and supporters of Hunslet Hawks to the Prince of Wales Stadium, the home of the All Golds.

We well and truly earned a place in today’s match after a strong performance against a good amateur Skirlaugh side. Now we face a different type of beast in Championship outfit, the Hunslet Hawks.

Hunslet are proving they are a great side and have been picking up some fantastic victories, but I think that we have the potential to cause an upset. The home crowd will be a big advantage we have the ability within us to win the match. We have made some really good additions to the

squad and in particular Courtney Davies and Ollie Purslow have answered

some questions that we had identified. They were the missing links and have brought a great deal to the club.

The appointment of Lee (Greenwood) has been a breath of fresh air this year and the relationship and influence that Lee and Dan (Garbutt) have over the squad has been outstanding. I am enjoying training and playing under their leadership. It has been an intriguing pre-season campaign for us and we weren’t focused on results but more on gelling as a team. We started with a huge squad and initially we progressed very well. Our improvements were shown by our narrow loss to Barrow Raiders in the iPro Cup (16 – 14) at the beginning of March. After this match Lee made the decision to cut the squad and there has been a dramatic improvement in

both the quality of training and performance on the field since. And now it is crunch time, time to take on the Hunslet Hawks in a game that everybody will enjoy. The players will enjoy the step up and it is a real test for us to see how far off the mark we are. #COYAG

P20 THE UNIVERSITY OF GLOUCESTERSHIRE ALL GOLDS

At the time of the 1965 Cup Final Hunslet were big underdogs and not expected to give Wigan any problems having finished the season mid table.

Wigan though were also going through a lean period in their history. They hadn’t won a trophy since winning the league in 1960, although they had just finished the league season in 2nd place behind St Helens. However in the first round of the Championship play offs they

suffered an embarrassing 15-8 home defeat to Featherstone who had finished the season 15th (a top 16 play off operated in those days).

The Wigan team was full of legends though. The great Billy Boston’s record of 478 tries in 488 Wigan appearances speaks for itself. Boston’s three quarter partner was Eric Ashton, 14 years a Wigan player despite being from St Helens. He was also player-coach at the time of this final. Other legends in the side that day included Phil Clarke’s dad Colin at Hooker and big prop Brian McTigue.

Matchday weather was great, sunny and warm. 89,016 made the trek down

to Wembley for what would turn out to be a classic final.

It took Wigan less than a minute to take the lead. Hunslet’s kick off had gone out on the full and Laurie Gilfedder kicked a penalty goal from half way to make it 2-0. Hunslet soon levelled up with a penalty of their own. Local Wigan lad Roy Evans was penalised for tackling off the ball and Bill Langton kicked over to make it 2-2.

Three minutes after Hunslet had controversially had a try chalked off for being in touch, Wigan took the lead. Hunslet had again failed to find touch from a penalty and Wigan made them pay. Pressure down the right from Gilfedder

and Ray Ashby sent Keith Holden away for the score. It was three points for a try in those days so Wigan led 5-2. The sides exchanged penalties again, first Hunslet then Wigan, making it 7-4 with 30 minutes gone.

The South Leeds side was doing well to keep Billy Boston and Eric Ashton quiet but the other wing-centre partnership of Holden and Trevor Lake was proving more difficult. They combined for Wigan’s second try with Lake finished off the move. Gilfedder converted to give Wigan a 12-4 lead which they hoped to take into half time.

Hunslet had other ideas and scored two minutes before the break. Half back Brian Gabbitas produced a bit of magic to send centre Geoff Shelton under the posts. Langton’s conversion made it 12-9 at half time and all to play for.

Into the second half and Wigan scored work. Hard work up the middle from McTigue and Evans sent Gilfedder on the breakaway. He managed to evade two defenders to score in the corner and make it 17-9, with a brilliant touchline conversion from Ashton.

Wigan had a try disallowed for double movement before they scored the match winner on the hour. Full back Ray Ashby had the ball well inside his own half. He took on three defenders, beat them, and on half way he

passed out wide to Lake. Lake raced away and just evaded a desperate tackle to score in the corner. Lake, born in Rhodesia, had finished off a classic cup final try. The conversion was missed but 20-9 up with 20 to play, the game looked won.

Hunslet though didn’t give up. In the 65th minute they

scored under the posts through John Griffiths and the conversion made it 20-14. A penalty with four minutes to go made it 20-16 and with them being well on top now, one converted try was all they needed to steal the win. Wigan managed to hang on and bring the trophy home for the 7th time.
