PAGE 1 STORYIt was an incredible fi nish, played out in low wind speeds but with plenty of high drama.

Thousands of spectators lining the famous Promenade des Anglais watched the 11 international Extreme 40 teams competing in 29 races over fi ve days at the Extreme Sailing Series debut in Nice. They raced over a mix of open water courses and stadium racing with the course set just metres off the beach.

Britain’s three-time Olympic gold medalist Ben Ainslie, skipper of Oman Air,

who won the fi nal race, had a frustrating event even though the team managed to climb from seventh to fi nish fi fth in the Nice rankings and eighth in the series.

The French crowd kept on cheering to keep Groupe Edmond de Rothschild going and she crossed the line just a few seconds and one place behind Artemis Racing to win the Nice event by just one point and maintain an overall series lead.

The penultimate event is in Spain from 12 to 16 October and the fi nal in Singapore in December.www.extremesailingseries.com

GOLD Coast Australia continued their winning streak by finishing first in the third stage of the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Cape Town, South Africa.

It was the third victory in a row for the crew, ‘people like you’, led by Tasmanian skipper, Richard Hewson.

The yacht is one of the ten international teams competing in the 40,000-milecircumnavigation

The 68-foot yacht crossed the finish line in Table Bay against the magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain at the end of the 3,300-mile race across the South Atlantic.

The team had led the fleet for 11 days and worked themselves into an unassailable position, which even their slow progress in very light airs over the last two miles of the course could not damage.

The victory also consolidated their position at the top of the overall Clipper 11-12 leader-board.

Arriving in the V&A Waterfront, Richard was thrown overboard by his celebrating crew. The dripping but ecstatic skipper

said: “Third time lucky – a fantastic race by all the crew. The finish was very challenging. We had light airs at the beginning and end and some really tough conditions in the middle, so the dunking and the finish really reflected the whole race, I think!”

During the race, the second ocean crossing of the world’s longest yacht race, the crews faced mountainous seas and strong headwinds.

The race started from Southampton on 31 July. It runs every two years and people from all walks of life can take on the challenge of a lifetime and race around the globe on stripped down ocean racing yachts.

Berths are now available for Clipper 13-14, which will see the introduction of a new fleet of 12 70-foot yachts.

The first episode of the six-part television documentary series, Against the Tide, which follows the crews on the last edition of the race, Clipper 09-10, is due to begin on Discovery World DStv channel 250 across southern Africa on 11 October at 8.05pm.www.clipperroundtheworld.com

BREWIN Dolphin, the investment management company announced its continued sponsorship of the Scottish Series, Scotland’s premier sailing regatta, in 2012.

During the 12-year sponsorship the Scottish Series has continued to thrive with more than 100 boats taking to the waters of Loch Fyne each year in tough competition. The 2012 series will take place during the Jubilee bank holiday weekend from Friday 1 June to Monday 4 June at Tarbert, Loch Fyne on Scotland’s

stunning West Coast. Jamie Matheson, chairman of Brewin

Dolphin and a keen sailor, said, “The event has been running for over 30 years and it’s great to be able to support it for yet another year.”

John Watson, Commodore of Clyde Cruising Club, event organisers, said: “It is a key event in the sailing calendar and the sponsorship funding will help to enhance the event for sailors and spectators alike.”www.brewindolphinscottishseries.com

INTERNATIONAL designers Rob Humphreys and his son, Tom, followed by Ian Benning of Volvo Penta will be the inaugural speakers in a series of lectures designed to inspire young people and to explore the UK’s unique international position in yacht design and boat building.

The Shipwrights Lectures, which are being organised by the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights, in conjunction with the University of Southampton, will provide an insight into the opportunities, technologies, and future developments in the industry.

Companies including Pendennis, Princess, Rustler Yachts, SYS and Halyard have registered for their apprentices to attend.

Attendance is free for apprentices nominated by their employers and young people under the age of 25.

Apprentices will receive a certifi cate of attendance for each lecture to build a collection demonstrating wide knowledge of different marine industry sectors.

BRITISH entrepreneur and adventurer Andrew Morris and former Royal Marine Mick Dawson will set off in May next year, to row across the North Atlantic on the way to the London Olympics.

The 2,587-mile journey is expected to take around 60 days.

After negotiating icebergs off the coast of Canada, the pair are likely to run into mid-Atlantic storms and will be required to navigate their way through one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

Accompanied by a fl otilla of boats, they will make their way up the River Thames for the start of the 2012 Olympics.www.olympicatlanticrow.com

LECTURES TO INSPIRE YOUNG APPRENTICES

Rowing to Olympics

A SAILING student decided to get a little practical experience fi rst – by sailing single-handed around the UK.

Tom Webb, 18, who arrived at Plymouth University to begin his ocean yachting degree course completed the 1,500-mile trip in his 21-foot yacht Danera to raise funds for two sailing charities – Even Keel and RYA Sailability. He said: “One of the things I am most passionate about is making sailing for the disabled more accessible.”

Practical lesson

Brewin Dolphin Scottish Series 2011, Tarbert Loch Fyne

IT used to seem expensive and therefore elitist. Outsiders thought it snobby or simply hadn’t a clue.

But public perceptions of boating are changing. It was a combination of relatively easy maintenance and mooring, the value and unexpected longevity of plastic boats, higher incomes and greater affordability that started the change.

The efforts of sailing and boating clubs, the progression from the smallest craft to weekenders and those capable of being lived aboard took things on apace. Businesses created on the back of new interest and demand – yacht charter companies for example that take away the costly pain of ownership but still provide the fun – have accelerated the trends.

Inspirational superstars such as Dame Ellen MacArthur, Dee Caffari, Ben Ainslie and the other incredible GBR Olympians, our own Geoff Holt and Shelley Jory-Leigh, to name but a few, have demonstrated how anyone can do something in a boat.

The biggest driver is simply determination although in the warmth of the pub when circumnavigators are deep in the southern ocean some other human qualities come more readily to mind – starting with crackers!

But look what happened in Plymouth last month. The America’s Cup came to town, almost literally, the boats were so close to the shore. Paired with a bit of a blow they produced a spectacle. Along with the by now almost traditional exploits of the Extreme 40s at Cowes and around the world, these racers are making a mockery of our isolated, up-market pastime.

Yacht racing is becoming like Formula One without the racket. It is approachable, watchable and lots of fun.

We certainly don’t want our

blossoming super stars behaving like bullyboy footballers but isn’t it terrifi c as sailing raises its profi le to have the satisfaction of being part of it? Some of the refl ected glory rubs off as we are able to commentate quite knowledgeably in front of the saloon bar TV, even though we’ve rarely been above six knots.

HEAVEN FROM HEAVENOTHER things are changing for the better too.

There was a hurricane of reaction when Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners fi rst planned changes to the Isle of Wight’s most precious harbour. It would bring nought but ruin, said the loudest voices.

Those of us who enjoy the delights of this gem of a seaside settlement thought they might have a bit of a point. The piles were not that much of a problem and the bureaucracy of booking ahead for a walk ashore berth made is seem boating was turning into caravanning.

But a week in town at the end of the summer was better than ever. An ideal berth almost adjacent to the harbour offi ce and facilities. No waiting for the taxi or having to plan trips to the ablutions.

No doubt someone will argue otherwise but for me this was making heaven still more heavenly.

Some of the striking images featured in the exhibition have never been on display before.

SECOND TITLEMARK Williams, 45, of Lowestoft secured his second British title of 2011 last month September) when he clinched the 2011 British RYA T850 Championship title. Mark, the 2010 F4 World Champion, opted out of the 2011 British F4 Championship to focus on the 2011 World title and brought his monohull out of retirement to battle for the T850 crown. The eight competitors of the T850 class battled it out over fi ve rounds of racing which started in Lancashire in May.

Get on board with RYA’s champion of championsSIXTEEN young sailors took to the water at the PSP Southampton Boat Show to put their sailing skills to the test in the ‘Champion of Champions’ OnBoard Festival.

The youngsters who all learnt to sail with the RYA OnBoard scheme braved a variety of conditions from bright sunshine to thundery rain showers, to take part in some fun team racing.

Hamble River Sailing Club, Hill Head Sailing Club, Spinnaker Club and Southampton Water Activity Centre joined forces to compete as team Hampshire while the Royal Victoria Yacht

Club and Brading Haven Yacht Club represented the Isle of Wight.

Team Isle of Wight were crowned the winners.

Run by the RYA, OnBoard is a grass roots programme which introduces sailing and windsurfi ng to young people aged eight to 18, through schools, youth groups and training centres.

Over a ten year period OnBoard aims to introduce a minimum of 500,000 children to sailing and windsurfi ng in the UK, converting more than ten per cent of them into regular participants.www.ruob.co.uk

SNEAK PREVIEW OF NEW MUSEUM

THE Princess Royal honoured maritime heroes who risked their lives in dangerous sea rescues including an air sea rescue team which saved the crew of a stricken merchant ship following a tropical cyclone and a Cornish fi sherman who battled through gale-force winds and heavy seas to save 47 lives.

The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society’s Skill and Gallantry Awards, presented annually since 1851, recognise those who go above and beyond their call of duty at sea.

This year’s awards were presented to an air-sea rescue crew from Somerset, a Cornish fi sherman and to Honorary Agent, Superintendent, Mike Sandison, who has given 25 years service to the Society, at Fishmongers’ Hall,

London Bridge, on 4 October. Cardiff based Honorary Agent Gwyneth

Rees was also presented with the Stoakes Award for long and dedicated service to the Society on the occasion of her retirement.

Fisherman Shaun Edwards, skipper of the Newlyn-based trawler NOVA SPERO, was awarded The Lady

Swaythling Trophy for an ‘outstanding feat of seamanship’ for undertaking a treacherous three-day rescue mission through gale force winds to save 47 passengers and crew of the Polish Tall ship Fryderyk Chopin.

The Edward and Maisie Lewis Award, for an ‘outstanding air/sea rescue’, was awarded to HMS CHATHAM’s Lynx helicopter crew for their role in the rescue of the crew of the MV Dubai Moon which had become caught in a tropical cyclone in the Indian Ocean.

Attempting to rescue the crew of the MV Dubai Moon before she sank, Flight Commander Lieutenant Commander Peter Higgins AFC and his crew displayed superb airmanship, teamwork and courage in winching 23 crewmen to

safety in dangerous conditions.Lieutenant Commander Graham

Chesterman, who was visiting HMS CHATHAM to carry out an air worthiness audit and had not fl own for 15 years, was awarded an individual commendation for his role in helping to winch 22 stranded seamen to safety.

The fi nal award, The Lord Lewin Award, was presented to Superintendent Mike Sandison following his 25 years as a dedicated Honorary Agent for the Society, supporting seafarers in need. Closely acquainted with the fi shing community during his lifetime, Mike supports over 100 regular Society benefi ciaries as well as ministering to a wider group of retired fi shermen and their dependents.

THE Mary Rose museum has launched a new video of how the inside of its new building at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will look when it opens to public at the end of 2012.

It shows key aspects of the new museum and also gives a preview through to 2016. The video gives insights into how the Mary Rose will be displayed and how the personal stories of the crew will be highlighted as the collection is reunited with the ship for the fi rst time since her raising in 1982.

The displays are shown on the fl ythrough as well as the views through windows into the

conservation ‘hot box’. Inside this space, the tubes supplying the air to dry the ship will be seen until 2016 when the 30-year conservation programme will be complete and the hull will be fully revealed once more.

Warings is building the £35 million project for the Mary Rose Trust, which is part funded by a £21million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The existing Mary Rose Museum remains open during construction with more than 1,000 of the fi nest conserved artefacts recovered from the site.www.maryrose500.org

Reasons to be cheerful – see our Southampton boat show review on page 28

Wind blows in best Windfest LAST month’s gales were a bonus for Windfest 2011 as 30 knots winds helped competitors execute the most extreme stunts.

The perfect combination of sunshine and wind pulled in the crowds to compete or watch the action on the water, on the sand and in the air above Sandbanks, Poole.

Sponsored by Franklin & Marshall, the British Kitesurfing Association National Course Racing Championships and Freestyle Invitational benefitted from the ideal conditions.

Steph Bridge proved why she is the four times world champion by winning the BKSA event for the second year in a row. Ned Taylor took home the trophy for the BKSA Men’s Freestyle Invitational championships with Sukie Robertson victorious in the Women’s Freestyle.

Hosted by Maverick Slacklines, the first UK Slacklining Championships revealed the huge amount of talent that is already in the UK for this burgeoning sport. After a breathtakingly close final, full of flips and highly technical combos, Jacob Hirsch Holland was crowned king of the UK slackliners.

Back on the water, amateur and professional windsurfers battled hard for the UK Windsurfing Association National Freestyle Tour. In some categories there was only a fraction of a point separating the winner.

The gruelling British Stand-Up Paddleboarding race around Brownsea Island, the BaySUP/BSUPA ‘Battle of the Paddle’, 14-foot plus Class Time and the BaySUP/BSUPA Men on Men Sprints proved a staggering feat of stamina and strength for Paul Simmons, who was first

across the finishing line in all four races. For the second year running, the

Redbull Matadors’ aerial antics were a huge crowd thriller.

Sponsored by Breeze Volkswagen, FCWatersports, and Fruit, other popular features at the South Coast’s biggest extreme sports festival included Ultimate Frisbee, wakeboarding, skateboarding, volleyball, surf ski.

Event Manager Gary Willingham said: “The wind gods have blessed this year’s Windfest with the best weather conditions in 13 years for full water action.

“We want to thank all our sponsors for their valuable support in helping us to continue to provide an action-packed, three-day, sports festival free of charge for Poole visitors.”www.windfest.co.uk

the NCI is an entirely voluntary organisation, setup in 1994 to assist in the protection of life at seas from watchtowers around the UK coastline. the 130-foot-high Calshot tower provides a visual watch over Southampton Water, one of the UK’s busiest stretches of water.

tracy taylor, community liaison coordinator at John lewis Southampton, said: “the John lewis Partnership has five boats based on the river Hamble which Partners (staff) from John lewis shops around the UK use, so we felt that this would be a donation which not only helped the local community, but which our Partners would appreciate.

the National Coastwatch Station at Calshot was set up in the old Coastguard Watch tower just over a year ago. It is one of 45 voluntary staffed stations around the UK.

Colin lewis, chairman of the local group of the NCI, said “NCI Calshot has already proved to be one of the best equipped stations in the UK and has been involved in helping to solve a variety of incidents, thanks to the help of our friends at John lewis.”

HMS Victory finally lost her masts last month when the mizzen top mast was removed as part of the restoration work taking place on Nelson’s flagship at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

She now looks like she did when she was taken into Gibraltar for repairs after the Battle of Trafalgar.

Bell Rigging, sub-contractors for BAE Systems have overseen the work as the ship’s three masts, bowsprit and rigging were dismantled over the summer for maintenance.

The last time HMS Victory was seen without her top masts was in 1944.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy’s Director General, Professor Dominic Tweddle said: “Watching the team painstakingly disassemble the rigging and masts of HMS Victory has been heart stopping at times! To do this intricate work, while

still keeping Victory open to the public, has been a logistical masterpiece.

“Interestingly, with her topmasts down, Victory will look much as she did after the Battle of Trafalgar when she had to be towed to Gibraltar for repairs.”

Most of the highly skilled operation has been carried out by master shipwrights and other specialist staff employed by BAE Systems who, while operating on the cutting edge of technology on modern warships, maintain the age-old wooden shipbuilding skills.

John O Sullivan, BAE Systems Project Manager for HMS Victory, said: “We have removed the upper sections of all three masts and bowsprit, booms, yards and spars, including 26 miles of associated rigging and 768 wooden blocks, some of which are 100 years old. We will then catalogue and document everything for future surveying,

design and replacement.“When the rigging is replaced a decision will be

made as to whether the wooden rope blocks can be re-used, recycled or replaced.”

Alongside the ship – still the flagship of the Second Sea Lord – in dry dock in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the National Museum of the Royal Navy has opened a new interactive exhibition, Bones of Oak & Iron – Beneath Victory’s Skin, exploring how HMS Victory was originally built in 1759, how she was preserved and cared for in war and peace and the restoration process that will cover the next ten years.

The exhibition is free to enter but a site ticket allows visits to the ship herself, the magnificent Trafalgar Sail, the Nelson and Sailing Navy galleries in the NMRN and the rest of the attractions at the Historic Dockyard.

Victory loses her masts

New curator for flagshipTIME-travelling historian Andrew Baines has sailed back through time from working on HMS Warrior 1860 to become the new curator for HMS Victory.

Andrew will lead on the conservation, restoration and interpretation of the world’s greatest surviving warship, which stands as a proud memorial to Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson, Britain’s greatest naval hero.

Working as part of the Curatorial Team at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, Andrew will be the principal advisor on matters relating to the history, structure, general appearance and public presentation of HMS Victory.

Andrew is already a familiar face within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard having worked on board HMS Warrior for the past 12 years where he has been the archivist and historian for eight years.

He recently managed the restoration of the ship’s sick berth which featured on BBC National Treasures Live.

Andrew said: “Victory is undoubtedly one of the world’s most famous and important ships, and so to have the opportunity to take a lead in telling her story, and developing new aspects to that narrative, is a great privilege.”

GOVeRNMeNt cuts are putting south-west sailors at risk by withdrawing funds from life-saving emergency services according to Cornwall County Council leaders.

Council leader Alec Robertson hit out at £300,000 cuts to funds for the Maritime Incident Response Group which tackles fires at sea.

He said: “every year MIRG saves at least ten lives off our coast. the cuts are very bad news for seafarers and we will be expressing our serious concerns to the government.”

the MIRG has 15 teams operating fire-fighting and towing vessels. It was recently called to deal with a fire on board the fishing vessel Athena in Falmouth Bay.

A YACHTSMAN clung to a buoy for more than an hour after falling overboard at 2am without a lifejacket half a mile from shore - and was only saved after holidaymakers at Padstow, Cornwall, were woken by faint cries for help.

The 61-year-old single-handed yachtsman was leaving the Padstow estuary at night when he fell overboard and the boat, under engine, continued out to sea.

The sailor managed to cling to a mooring buoy but his cries for help went unheeded for over an

hour until Owen Collis, staying in a waterside flat, was woken by what he thought was a seagull.

“I realised it was someone shouting for help and called the coastguard. Normally I sleep through anything. It was a miracle I woke up.”

The sailor was found by Rock inshore lifeboat, taken to hospital and later discharged.

A lifeboat spokesman said: “The man must have been terrified by his ordeal. The tide was turning and the current could have torn him from the buoy. The yacht was later found undamaged at Porthilly.”

Holidaymakers heard cries

THE world’s only seagoing paddle steamer could make her last voyage next month if £350,000 is not found to keep her in sea-going trim.

The 64-year-old steam-driven Waverley, which has carried more than five million passengers over the past 35 years as a major tourist attraction, needs an expensive refit to conform with the latest safety standards. Without it, says the charity that operates the ship, she won’t be sailing in 2012.

“We have already raised nearly £200,000 to keep this unique and iconic ship going but we urgently need donations for the rest,” said Nick James, chairman of Waverley Steam Navigation.

“Huge fuel cost rises and several bad summers haven’t helped but we had 140,000 passengers this year and the number keeps rising. Waverley is a unique piece of maritime heritage.”Donations can be made online at: www.justgiving.com/Paddlesteamerwaverley

A MAN and woman were “lucky to be alive” after being rescued from a sinking dinghy on Devon’s River teign.

Coastguards said the pair, who were not wearing lifejackets, found themselves in difficulty when the vessel abruptly sank near Coombe Cellars.

Members of the public called out teignmouth lifeboat after the dinghy disappeared. the occupants were rescued from the water and checked by paramedics before being allowed to go home.

A Brixham Coastguard spokesman said: “thanks to members of the public this was not the tragedy it could have been. they are lucky to be alive.”

MORe than 90 yachts battled it out in the little Britain Challenge Cup, europe’s largest commercial sailing regatta, with star guests, the GBR Paralympic Sailing team taking part as one crew to compete against 1,000 able bodied sailors for the final two races.

the overall winner of the 2011 lBCC was Stone and Ceramic Warehouse (Class 3), with Shepherd Construction (Class 4) taking second place, and Gratte Brothers on little emily (Class 4) in third.

the Paralympians gave up their free time to join in the lBCC racing and evening festivities.

Competing in Saturday’s racing and attending the Gala Dinner undoubtedly spurred on a generous reaction from the construction industry, as this year’s charity coffers, which is shared across a number of sailing related organisations, leapt up to £40,000 after the four day event.

lBCC chairman David Smith said: “I was privileged to be invited to join the GBR Paralympic sailors for what were two memorable and exciting races.

“In another very testing year for our industry, I am so delighted our supporters and sponsors rallied to push this year’s donations up to a magical £40,000. “

the event, based at Cowes Yacht Haven, included a Champagne reception at the Royal Yacht Squadron and the annual fancy dress extravaganza, ‘Viva las Vegas’.

Next year the lBCC, which takes place 6-9 September 2012, celebrates its 25th anniversary.

NEWS IN BRIEFRock fallTHE New Quay inshore lifeboat crew launched off the west Wales coast at on 27 September after a 70-year-old angler fell 16 feet on to rocks and was badly injured. The volunteers gave the man first aid and oxygen, before taking him on board and transferring him to the beach where he was airlifted by the RAF rescue helicopter to hospital.

Rescued by lifeboat and his lifejacketTHE volunteer crew members of Calshot lifeboat station were called to help with a multi-agency search for a missing sea angler on the night of 29 September.

Calshot’s all-weather and inshore lifeboats were launched at 11.15pm after reports that a man’s cries for help had been heard. A police helicopter and coastguard mobile unit were also involved in the search.

The police helicopter team spotted the man in the water thanks to the bright reflective strip on his lifejacket and were able to guide the crew of the Calshot inshore lifeboat to his exact location. The volunteer crew pulled him aboard and returned him directly to the shore of Lepe Beach where medical help was awaiting.

Mike Croxson, Helmsman aboard Calshot RNLI inshore lifeboat, said:

‘The man, who was in his 60s, had been fishing in a motorised dinghy, which we found capsized nearby. The police helicopter team guided us to his exact location using their searchlight and we pulled him from the water. Given his deteriorating condition we quickly transferred him straight ashore and handed him into the care of the

waiting medical team.’Mike Lawrence, Second Coxswain

and Mechanic at Calshot RNLI, was in charge of the all-weather lifeboat which recovered the capsized dinghy after he had been successfully rescued. The all-weather lifeboat crew also continued to search the area in case anyone else had been in the vessel.

Mike Lawrence said: ‘Fortunately the man was wearing a lifejacket, which is something the RNLI charity strongly advises for anyone going to sea – they

should be considered an essential piece of safety equipment. Indeed in this case the reflective strip on the man’s lifejacket was the reason why were able to find him so soon after launching.

‘We have contacted the hospital today (Friday) and we are pleased to report that the man is well and is set to return home this afternoon after his ordeal. Everyone at the lifeboat station is very pleased that he is safe and this just goes to show that the use of a lifejacket is hugely important to one’s safety at sea.’

Yacht struggles

VOLUNTEERS launched Tobermory all-weather lifeboat to a yacht with engine failure on 29 September. The 38-foot yacht was struggling to make way under sail around the most westerly point of the British mainland. The lifeboat took the yacht under tow to the safety of Tobermory harbour. Yacht skipper, Hugh Barry said: “I have always had the highest regard for the RNLI and have been a staunch supporter all my life. Today when I felt my life depended on them, they were there for me.”

2 Bed Apartment in Port Solent Marina Boasting two double bedrooms, en-suite wet room to the master bedroom, split level dining/living and magnificent views across Port Solent Marina. This apartment is perfect for the best in lifestyle living.

IT WASN’T so many years ago that waterside properties were rather looked down upon.

Lovers of classical literature or period drama for that matter, will be well aware that Peggoty’s dwelling in Charles Dicken’s David Copperfield was far from salubrious or sought after.

Times have changed, however and these days any house with a view of the sea is considered hot property.

Most of us dream of pulling open the curtains on to a vista of shimmering sea and sand. Not only that, it’s a dream that many of us are chasing and that is driving waterfront housing prices up.

The latest research indicates that on average house prices in sought after coastal locations are 20 to 100 per cent more expensive than the regional average.

Nevertheless, coastal property has not been immune from the droop in property prices of late and although values are still

proportionately higher than those inland. It’s a buyer’s market out there at the

moment, so if you are a cash buyer, there are (relative) bargains to be had and, as we all know, the British coastline can dish up a whole range of delights.

At the most expensive end of the market, you have Devon, where seaside villages and towns such as Salcombe continue to prove popular with the well financed and discerning second home buyer. A large property in this area could command up to £2m even in today’s slightly sickly market.

Holiday home buyers continue to ensure that properties in picturesque seaside villages even in the more far flung corners of the UK continue to command healthy prices. Around £300,000, for example, will get you a small detached cottage in the area.

We live in straitened times, yet there is still money out there and even though everyone is playing their cards a little

closer to their chests than was previously the case, there are also buyers.

Generally a buyer of a waterside property will be looking to buy into a lifestyle and purchases are often made with the heart rather than the head.

Many looking at homes along the south and east coasts will be aiming to get something within the commuter belt. Heading further afield, the seriously moneyed, and yes they are still out

there, will be looking to the likes of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and as far afield Scotland for ‘bolt holes’ away from the hurly burly of city life.

Shopping alongside these will be the recent retirees, who are looking to spend their nest egg and live the dream in some tranquil location.

Beyond that, you’ll have a fair selection of yachties looking for a no nonsense base to from whence to pursue their

weekend racing. If you fit into these categories or not,

the underlying truth is that when you are buying a waterside property, you are not just buying a property in a prime location – you are buying into a lifestyle.

Over coming editions of All At Sea we will be finding you location specific advice on what is available in addition to inside information on what to look out for and what to avoid. Don’t miss it.

As part of a new service All At Sea brings you the lowdown on what’s hot and what’s not in the waterside property market.

GREEN FOCUSDAN READING, THE GREEN BLUE

The Green Blue is the environment programme created by the British leisure marine industry for the benefi t of anyone who enjoys getting out on the waterA joint BMF and RYA initiative

The Green Blue is the environment programme created by the British leisure marine industry for the benefi t of The Green Blue is the environment programme created by the British leisure marine industry for the benefi t of The Green Blue is the environment programme created

THE title is an oxymoron really, how can these two super large events ever be ‘green’ without issuing all the competitors with green wetsuits, green oileys and painting Ben Ainslie’s Finn a deep emerald shade?

Well, while the events inherently use a lot of resources and create copious amounts of emissions from travelling and support boats, the organisers have sustainability engrained into the event which can only be a positive thing – if not just to set an example.

These regattas perhaps offer the two most highly sought-after crowns for any competitive sailors and with that in mind, the way in which they are managed and promoted has the potential to be hugely infl uential.

The RYA’s environmental initiative, The Green Blue, has worked with the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy to become the fi rst Olympic and Paralympic Venue to have a fully certifi ed Sustainable Event Management System beating the likes of Wembley, Wimbledon and the Millennium Stadium

let alone any other sailing venue across the world.

This has enabled me to work for the London 2012 organisers in delivering a sustainable sailing event and has caught the attention of the Americas Cup Event Authority who we have also advised.

I have been lucky enough to be involved with managing the sustainability issues surrounding these events.

Normally the fi rst question I get asked is ‘but what does that mean, Dan?!’ Well, I reply, sustainability covers a wide range of issues but the ones common at all sailing events would be putting measures in place to ensure that no oil and fuel is spilt into the water and making sure that shore side facilities offer athletes places to recycle their waste therefore attempting to ensure that no rubbish makes its way into the sailing waters.

I’ve heard it said that the Americas Cup is the Formula 1 of the sailing world and as such we try to cater for the clientele and manage the differing issues that may arise. This doesn’t mean glass

recycling bins capable of accommodating magnums of champagne but instead involves looking at other areas we can help cater for a different type of boat.

For instance, in Plymouth for the America’s Cup World Series we are planning to have the facility for teams to recycle carbon fi bre from their boats in the event of a snapped mast or other broken components from dramatic crashes that we have seen in similar classes such as the Extreme 40’s at Cowes.

One of the lesser-known issues that could hinder our sport is the spread of non-native invasive species. To you and me that means marine life bought in on the hull that negatively affects species in the UK, often having an economic impact on aquaculture. Making sure that the teams don’t bring any nasties to our sailing waters is high on the list as well as making sure the British team don’t spread the nasties that have already found themselves into some corners of the UK.

The Weymouth and Portland Sailing Test Event was a great success and it

was rewarding to see how by specifying environmental considerations in the procurement process the suppliers were all helping to achieve some of the same goals such as sending zero waste to landfi ll in 2012.

It is good to see regattas such as Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week following the Weymouth trend ensuring that bow stickers had recyclable backing paper and instructions were given to ensure that decals did not end up fl oating in the water like the

Aberdeen Asset Management Extreme 40 sailing team!

In summary the main objectives for organising a sustainable sailing event are; manage oil and fuel properly, ensure waste is effectively segregated, no litter in the water, ensure your vision is promoted through your supply chain, promote the use of pump out facilities, and reduce the amount of energy used.

So if you are organising a sailing regatta get in touch and we can give you some free advice!

POWERSHELLEY JORY-LEIGH

Business woman and British Power Boat Champion Shelley Jory, from Hampshire, is one of the UK’s leading powerboat racers and the top female in the world. In her spare time she runs a bridal business

THE Liverpool Grand Prix of the Sea last month saw the fi nal of the 2011 RYA British P1 SuperStock Championships.

The championship’s 14 teams headed to the new-look Mersey River Festival which returned for the fi rst time since 2005.

As Saturday’s race loomed my fellow racers and I faced a slight swell and 18 knots of wind creating challenging racing and the championship leaders Pertemps also faced engine problems.

Edox Racing crew of Rupert Pugh and Will Nurse took a fl ying start and Helvetia Wealth started the race in fi fth but the gruelling conditions were soon to create casualties.

The Spirit of Liverpool team retired after four laps. Now sitting in fourth my navigator Dan Smith and I opted to play it safe and hold our position and go for a clean fi nish as the winds increased and

the swells bounced back off the walls of the Mersey – points make prizes!

Formidable opponents, Team Typhoo, Andy Wilby and Jonny Allbut were forced to withdraw on the ninth Lap as one of their engine mounts gave way and they lost steering narrowly missing a collision with Team 88’s Simon Bayles and Phillipa Baker.

Continuing our steady course Dan and I were now third behind race leaders Edox Racing and Cowes Grand Prix winners Peters and May team Darren Hook and Dave Harwood.

But as Team Edox lapped Helvetia Wealth on the back section of the course the race leader Edox overturned and partially sunk right before our eyes.

Driver Rupert Pugh and Will Nurse were thrown clear and were quickly picked up by safety marshals but the

race was red fl agged and brought to a premature end with 11 of the 15 scheduled laps completed.

Peters and May’s, Hook and Harwood, took the honours with Helvetia Wealth - Dan and me -securing silver and Team 88’s Bayles and Baker taking bronze.

All eyes turned to Sunday’s race with just four points separating the top two teams in the championship.

On the Sunday morning the race organisers were forced to make the diffi cult decision to cancel the scheduled race with worsening weather predicted and safety issues for the competitors.

So following an exciting fi nale to the season the results were confi rmed

Pertemps John Wilson and Neil Scarborough secured the inaugural P1 SuperStock Panther RYA British Championship and Saturday’s Silver Medal promoted Helvetia Wealth to fourth place.

“It’s been a fantastic season and to fi nish fourth in my fi rst season is a great result,” said Dan.

In The P1 SuperStock 150 Championship Team Purple, husband and wife team Stuart and Sara Cureton fi nished the season off on a high taking a win in the fi nal race of the season to make it seven in nine races and to secure themselves the 2011 RYA British P1 SuperStock 150 Title.

Team Eclipse, Rose Lores and John Donnelly secured second in the 150 championship with just three points separating them from third placed Martin Colligan and Liam McDermott of Team Fox.

I would never have expected to fi nish fourth overall this year especially with the caliber of the competition in the fl eet, I was just happy to be back racing.

My thanks have to go to all the RYA Offi cials and P1 Staff for all their hard work this season and to all the racers for their support and encouragement.

But special thanks have to go to my navigator Dan and the rest of the Helvetia Wealth team. Bring on 2012!”

Glad to be back in a boat and racing

The former professional yachtsman who was paralysed in a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became the fi rst quadriplegic to sail the Atlantic.a swimming accident and inspired sailors when he became

MORE than 60 boats and 150 disabled and able-bodied sailors converged on Rutland Water for a weekend last month to compete in the annual RYA Sailability Multiclass Regatta.

Competitors came from as far afi eld as Holland, France and Canada as well as the UK and battled it out in nine classes- Stratos, SKUD, Access, 2.4mR, Challenger, Sonar, SQUIB, Kinsman and Neo 495.

The racing began on Saturday with each class competing in four class races. While the wind decided which direction it wanted to blow, racing was held up. Once it made its mind up the clouds parted and the sun shone, creating perfect sailing conditions.

Sunshine and wind continued throughout Sunday which was all about the prestigious Ken Ellis Trophy and saw 150 sailors all contesting in the two-race Trophy general handicap series, creating quite a spectacle out on the water.

Competing for the fi rst time in the regatta was the Neo 495 class which had two new entries. Alain Inzerlac, the designer of the boat, came from the South of France to compete. “It is great to be here this weekend. This boat was built in 2005 and is designed especially

for disabled people to race,” he said.“I have really enjoyed sailing here

at Rutland Water and it has been a fantastic opportunity to introduce people to my boat”.

Amy Oulton, 22, from Ringwood Sailability, who suffers with a rare disability was competing in an Access 303.

“I am so excited to be competing this weekend, even though my chances of winning are not very high. This event is amazing as it provides competitors with a chance to sail alongside sailors of all levels of ability and experience. Some people have been sailing for years and years whereas I am very new!” said Amy.

“The social side is fantastic too and I have even met another lady with the same disability as me. It’s a very special event.”

Wilma van der Broek, sailing in the Access Liberty fl eet, was revealed as the overall multiclass champion and the winner of the Ken Ellis Trophy at the offi cial prize giving.

“I am very surprised and couldn’t believe it when I heard I was the fi rst person of the day,” said a delighted Wilma from the Netherlands.

Alex Hovden was also announced as the winner of the fi rst UK Open Skud 18 National Championships.

Matt Grier, RYA Racing Development Coach said: “Another successful year. The weather has been perfect, with less wind and we have seen some great tactical racing.

“It’s fantastic to see the development of the people coming back each year as well as the development of the

Paralympic and disabled sailing.”The event was also extra special this

year as it invited disabled sailors to come along and have a go on a variety of different boats under the watchful eye of a qualifi ed instructor in the ‘try a sail’ area which was running throughout the weekend.

The Model Yachting Association (MYA) also attended the event and invited sailors to come and try something a bit different- sailing without getting wet!

“Once again we have had a spectacular turnout at this year’s event, making it our biggest regatta yet” said Debbie Blachford, RYA Sailability Manager.

“Not only is the Multiclass a great showcase of the talent we have within the disabled community, but it is also a great social event too with many spectators coming along to support the sailors and meet other disabled people who share a common interest in the sport”.

A special thank you also goes to the 70 plus volunteers who worked tirelessly over the weekend to ensure the event ran smoothly from start to fi nish including the RAF which donated safety boats with their crews.

The multiclass regatta is part of the RYA Sailability national sailing and racing programme ‘Making Disability Plain Sailing’, which is funded jointly by Sport England and the RYA Sailability Trust.

For more information about RYA Sailability visit www.rya.org.uk and click on the Sailability link at the bottom of the page.

I AM just about to set off on a four week delivery of a Dufour 45e to Malta.

The yacht is required to take part in the Rolex Middle Sea Race in October. The course will start off from the Grand Harbour Malta and takes yachts up through the straits of Messina, round the islands of Stromboli, Favignana, Pantelleria and Lampedusa before returning to Malta.

Let’s hope that Etna and Stromboli are quiet. The Dufour has 11 headsails on board, so we will fi ll up the owner’s cabin in the bow with all the sail bags.

When I am teaching Yachtmasters, I discuss what precautions one needs to take should heavy weather either be forecast or the weather indications show that we are in for a serious blow.

One of the measures I put forward is getting all the sail bags out and placing them in strategic positions down below, so that if crew are thrown around there is something soft to land on. With most modern boats with furling headsails, it is unlikely, unless the boat is coded and has trysail and storm jib, which should be fi tted before the onset of heavy

weather, that there will be many sails to act as cushions down below.

This trip will be an opportunity to revert to what I did only once on my old Rival 34, 50 miles west of the Straits of Gibraltar in a f9 Levanter many years ago.

We brought all the sails not needed to be hanked on from the forepeak and spread them around the saloon. That saved my bacon from getting bruised at least once! If are interested in my list of pre, during and post heavy weather actions, email me and I will send you my pennyworth.

COURSES FOR YOUI shall be back in mid October and getting geared up for some autumnal sailing and all the theory courses. I will be running Day Skipper, Yachtmaster, Ocean and radio courses either in Cheltenham, Whiteparish south east of Salisbury or wherever you may [email protected]

Spare sails can save your bacon

OVER the years I have seen and suffered fi rst-hand the ignominy of either a plugless mains lead or a mains leadless plug!

It is easy enough to forget to disconnect, especially if setting sail at night. You may like to copy what I do. Where there are two bow or stern lines, and sometimes when there is only one, I coil the electric cable around the warp, the warp is made on to the pontoon cleat with a bowline and before it is made into a slip, the electric cable has to be unwound and hopefully secured on board. See the photo, courtesy of Barry Horne’s Silent Angel.

WIRED UP

UP to 9 J class yachts will be racing round the Isle of Wight on 21 July 2012 in a re-enactment of the 100 Guinea cup raced in 1851. I am chartering a 700 ton vessel which will carry 300 passengers, from which we can watch the race. I will be providing a light breakfast, a slap up lunch and afternoon tea. There will be a pay bar. SINCE its inception ten years ago some 15,000 plus youngsters have taken part in the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship.

This year approximately 5,000 more youngsters aged between eight and 16 from across Britain have taken part, as the nationwide scheme promoting safe powerboat handling enjoys something of a renaissance.

Always popular with the clubs and groups who already value its worth in developing highly-skilled, proficient drivers who can take on invaluable safety boat and support crew duties to support sailing club activities, 2011 has been all about changing the perceptions of those who have traditionally seen the championship as just a powerboat racing event.

The crusade started with the recruitment of new Honda RYA Youth RIB National Event Manager, Andy Felthouse, who joined the RYA’s Honda Youth RIB team after last year’s championship.

Andy has toured the country, visiting clubs, talking at regional conferences and advising clubs on the best way to run heats and training. He also attended all 14 regional finals with the two championship Honda Ribcraft boats, covering several thousand miles from the centre of London to the South Coast of England, across to North Wales and Ireland and up to Scotland as well as visiting Guernsey for the Channel Islands’ final.

No fewer than ten new clubs, centres or youth groups nationwide got involved for the first time with140 organisations in total. A total of 150 local heats were staged across the 14 regions, with the successful drivers from each heat progressing through to regional finals.

All in all regionally, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship racecourse, with its emphasis on swift, efficient and safe manoeuvring, has been laid out and collected up over 20 times and more than 200 certificates have been handed

out to successful entrants at local heats and regional finals.

On Sunday 18 September 28 youngsters racing in the two age groups – eight to12 and 13 to16 – contested the national grand final at the PSP Southampton Boat Show.

This year it was a clean sweep for Parkstone Yacht Club when Harrison Faull triumphed in the eight to 12 age-group winning a Honwave T40 RIB with a Honda BF20 engine for the club, while in landing the 13 to 16 national title Ben Edwards won a 4.8m Ribcraft RIB with a Honda BF60 engine for the club as well.

Andy admits that although more doors have been opened this year, there is still a lot of work to do to get even more clubs and groups involved in 2012 and beyond.

He said: “It was fascinating the perceptions some organisations held of the championship. Some have always struggled to see the benefit of putting an eight-year-old in a boat and sending them off at 30mph across the water,

while others didn’t even realise the championship has been going for ten years.

“We have tried to engage with as many clubs, centres and groups as possible and illustrate to each of them how being involved in the championship could benefit them specifically. Yes powerboating is a sport in its own right but it’s the fact these young drivers can help support training and racing activities where the real long-term benefits lie.

“Getting more instructors and training principles on board with the concept has been a big focus. Many new doors have been opened this year, with some groups running championship activity for the first time, whilst others have shown a new interest but have not quite invited us in yet. It is an ongoing process but we are really encouraged by the response we have had this year.”

The Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is co-ordinated nationally

by event director Andrew Norton, the RYA’s Motor Cruising Projects Manager, with senior administrator Sally Curry.

Andrew added: “Most importantly the Honda RYA Youth RIB is a fun championship kids really enjoy taking part in. Some of our best young drivers do go into powerboat racing but many more simply use their skills to help at their sailing clubs, or become instructors, which benefit clubs long-term.

“The best kids aren’t the ones who can drive fastest in a straight line it’s those who can smoothly and skilfully manoeuvre a powerboat. That’s the whole purpose of the event and we are excited by the progress we’ve continued to make this year.”

PSP SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW 2011 THE last champagne fl ute has been drained, the crowds have dispersed, the stands have been dismantled and the dust has settled on the 2011 PSP Southampton Boat Show.

It’s time to pause and refl ect on another successful show, which saw 111,017 pass through the turnstiles and wander the aisles and pontoons.

The boating community isn’t completely immune to the fi nancial turmoil which has given us all a rough ride over the past few years but we’re a hardy bunch and have maintained a bullish optimism and generally sailed serenely over the troubled fi nancial waters.

This attitude was refl ected at this year’s show, with both public and exhibitors maintaining an attitude of cautious optimism. Attendance was nine per cent down on last year, which could largely be attributed to the rather gloomy weather at the beginning of the week.

Yet the weather throughout the show refl ected the general mood: as the show progressed, so the weather brightened and the crowds thronged around the many attractions on offer.

And what a selection they had to enjoy. With more than 580 exhibitors in

attendance, 11 world product and boat launches and innumerable other displays to be enjoyed, this was a show with much to offer, including the Great British Oyster Festival, Michelin star celebrity Chef Shaun Rankin demonstrating in the Sea Kitchen Theatre and the impressive HMS Bulwark which welcomed almost 8,000 visitors aboard.

In addition many of the old favourites made a welcome return such as the Try a Boat feature, while visitors were able to get another look at Jeremy Rogers’ eco friendly Contessa 32.

Show visitor James Eaves explained what had brought him to the show: “It’s just such an amazing event!” he enthused, “I love coming here every year, it has just got such a great atmosphere, there is so much to do and see that I must say that I was literally intoxicated with it all by the end of the day.”

It wasn’t just the visitors who were the winners, with many exhibitors reporting strong sales.

Yacht Broker Marco Marine reported selling more than £1m worth of yachts. Managing Director Richard Poulson explained: “We sold six Dufour 375’s and one Dufour 405 to Neilson Active Holidays for their 2012 Mediterranean fl otillas. It has been a very good show.”

David Pougher, chairman of National Boat Shows added: “Business has been done here at the PSP Southampton Boat Show with steady sales across the range of boats, equipment and services on display.

“While many exhibitors may not have broken any records, visitors have certainly been buying at a level to what they can afford. The marine industry is experiencing the same challenges as many other industries within the current climate and by providing the best possible platform the show has given marine companies a much needed boost.

“Following the success of this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show, we look forward to working towards an even more impressive show in London from 6-15 January. The positive feedback from visitors and exhibitors alike gives us the drive to ensure the 2012 London Boat Show is an unmissable event and an excellent showcase for the UK leisure marine industry.”

BULWARK

ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVALTHE show received the Royal seal of approval with the visit of Princess Anne who was an enthusiastic attendee.

The Princess Royal had a busy day and kicked off by blessing the renaming of yacht racer Mike Golding’s Imoca 60 Gamesa.

The extreme racing machine is at the centre of Golding’s bid to become the fi rst Briton to win the Vendée Globe solo round-the-world race.

It was not all plain sailing for the royal visitor though when she failed to smash the champagne bottle fi rst time. But Princess Anne, who is the president of the Royal Yachting Association, was in a relaxed mood as she joked and laughed

when she fi nally managed to break the bottle the second time and supporters cheered.

Mike said: “It was a great day for me and the whole team to be here at the PSP Southampton Boat Show with our newly optimised IMOCA 60. This is the beginning of the intensive run up towards Vendee Globe in 2012.”

Rustler yachts also enjoyed a royal visit as the princess took a tour around their Rustler 42. The princess has recently purchased an identical yacht and was keen to get a feel for her new purchase.

Princess Anne then rounded off a full day by honouring Hampshire charity Ocean Youth Trust South for its

efforts as she presented them with the prestigious Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service – the equivalent of an MBE for organisations working to make a difference in their communities.

THE arrival at the show of HMS Bulwark on September 22 ensured that the Royal Navy made its presence felt in no uncertain manner.

At 176 metres long, she was pretty hard to miss. HMS Bulwark is one of the Albion class of amphibious assault warships. She was launched in 2001 and has since taken part in operational tasking off the coast of Southern Iraq. Following her fl agship status in the Taurus 09 deployment, she underwent a six-month refi t in 2010 and rejoined the fl eet in March of this year.

In total, some 8,000 visitors went aboard in order to get some insight in

to how life is aboard a fully operational naval vessel and many were fascinated. “I’m stoked to have been aboard this boat,” said show visitor Chris Eager, “It was just so big and I have a new found respect for these guys. Who would have thought that you could live on something like this year round. The mind boggles, I think I’ll stick to my house on dry land.”

Bulwark’s Commanding Offi cer, Captain Alex Burton, said he was delighted to welcome the show’s visitors on board the Royal Navy’s future Flag Ship. He was happy to lay on a fantastic tour of one of the country’s most modern warships.

THURSDAY was Ladies’ Day and there was a defi nite air of sophistication as frocks were donned to bring a glimmer of glamour to the show.

Many entered into the spirit fully by putting themselves forward for the Best Dressed Lady competition in association with the Daily Echo.

After much deliberation the prize was awarded to Angie Jones, 49, from Ringwood. Angie won a trip on a glamorous yacht and a meal for four.

Celebrities did their bit too. Powerboat racer and All at Sea columnist Shelley Jory-Leigh was the ambassador for Ladies day and she ensured she remained fi rmly In the limelight by scaling the rigging of tall ship Lord Nelson along with PSP representative Jo Dixie.

The proceeds from the day went to children’s charity Touching Tiny Lives.

ONE of the great joys of the Southampton Boat Show is that it offers visitors a golden opportunity to get out on the water and try something new.

This year was no exception and if anything, there was an even greater range of vessels available.

Punters fl ocked to the pontoons to try out the various options, which included the Try a Boat attraction which enabled visitors to get a taste of boating. There were a variety of boats available from

high speed RIBS to sailing yachts which visitors booked.

Aimed at getting children on to the water, Get Afl oat also proved to be a big hit, with children aged between eight and 16 able to enjoy a free 90-minute dinghy sailing experience.

In addition the truly adventurous were not only able to get out on to the water, they could also go under it. Show exhibitor Andark offered visitors the opportunity to get the feel of SCUBA diving.

FOOD was a big part of the show and many visitors found themselves enthralled by one of the newest and most novel attractions – the Sea Kitchen Theatre.

Celebrity Chef Shaun Rankin and demonstration chefs cooked up a storm and left spectators shrimpering with pleasure.

Rankin, a Michelin starred chef and self-confessed fish fanatic proved he haddock what it took when it came to culinary cunning, offering visitors the opportunity to learn some of his secrets and some lucky visitors had the opportunity to sit on the Chef’s table and sample the food.

For the first time in the show’s history, an oyster festival was held to celebrate the start of the native oyster fishing season. Held in association with the Shellfish Association of Great Britain, the event was the first in the UK to offer visitors the opportunity to taste three different varieties of oysters, free of

charge, on a first-come-first served basis.Show attendee Mike Wright was

seduced by the allure of the oyster: “I’m not usually a great one for seafood but these oysters were simply amazing,” he gushed, “A few of these meaty molluscs and a couple of glasses of pink champagne and I was well away!”

Each session consisted of top tips on how to select and open oysters, how to ensure your oysters are from a sustainable source, how oysters are grown and harvested and how to prepare them at home.

Industry professionals also discussed the health benefits of oysters and challenges currently facing the industry.

ONE of the feelgood stories of the show was the saga of the 100-foot sail training ketch Leader.

The historic vessel dates back to 1892 and is used by Devon based Trinity sailing. Earlier in September she was at the centre of a dramatic rescue operation by the RNLI after she lost her mast in rough seas.

Things looked pretty bleak back then but a stroll around the pontoons

revealed the old vessel looking none the worse for wear as she was decked out in all her finery and attracting admiring glances.

Fortunately, the break happened towards the end of Trinity’s season and the temporary repair effected to bring Leader to her Southampton show berth is not going to be used while the vessel is operating in any training capacity. Full repairs will be made over the winter.

MARINA FOCUSSPOTLIGHT ON MARINAS AND HARBOURS

SUTTON HARBOURPLYMOUTH, DEVON

THE port of Plymouth needs very little introduction. Even before Sir Francis Drake confi dently bestrode the Hoe, the port had established itself as an ideal haven for craft of all types.

Nothing much has changed these days. The port remains an ideal haven and many cruisers see it as the ideal starting point, whether for a cross channel cruise or a short hop down to Cornwall or east towards the Dorset coast and the Solent beyond.

Although much of the heart of this historic city was ripped out by the Luftwaffe in Word War II, head down to the Barbican area on the waterfront and you will fi nd that it retains much the same thriving hubbub it must have had in

Elizabethan times. Nestling in the midst of this area is Sutton

Harbour Marina. Consisting of 490 berths spread around what was traditionally the fi sh dock, it is made up of three separate areas: Sutton Harbour, Guys Quay and West Quay.

The marina has a rich history stretching back to 1847, when the merchants of the town set up the Sutton Harbour improvement company to maintain and run the fi sh docks.

Over a century later, the addition of lock gates made the harbour more user friendly and paved the way for the current marina development, which now boasts 490 leisure berths and state-of-the-art facilities all within a stone’s throw of Plymouth’s fi nest bars and restaurants.

Centuries of history

suppliesIn addition to a Co-op nearby on the Barbican, the main city centre is a ten minute walk away and there is both a tesco on eastlake Walk and a Sainsbury’s on Armada Way.

Where to eat and drinkthe Barbican is crammed with cafes, bars and restaurants, so you really are spoilt for choice. If it’s fast food you are after, look no further than Cap’n Jasper’s on Whitehouse pier, overlooking Guys Quay.

Beyond this, if it’s a nice restaurant you are after, you are spoilt for choice. Standouts include Himalayan Spice on New Street (tel: 01752 252211) and the Thai Palace on elliot Street (tel: 01752 255770). You can’t go far wrong with the Marina Bar, which is a stone’s throw away from Sutton. You can’t miss it when you leave the marina.

What to seeHead to the Hoe for a stroll through a few centuries of naval history.

For culture the Barbican theatre is nearby.

Heading further afield, Dartmoor is on the doorstep and the coastal path is always a delight.

In addition, if you are thinking of visiting in summer, there’s always a real buzz. Not only have you got the Fastnet race, which finishes here in August, but you also have the Plymouth Maritime festival, and the Plymouth Classic Boat Rally.

the National Marine Aquarium on Coxside is also worth a visit, where Snorkel the sociable turtle is always a hit with the kids.

entering sutton harBourEntering the marina is relatively straightforward, as indeed is Plymouth sound.

The marina is situated to the NE of Plymouth Sound and an easy initial marker by day is Smeaton’s red and white striped Tower up on the Hoe. You’re initially aiming for Fisher’s Nose (FL(3) R.10s). Leave that to port and you head toward the lock. Queen Anne’s Battery Marina is to starboard and Sutton lock is immediately to the north. The approach is dredged to 2m.

The lock is manned 24 hours a day and can be called on Channel 12. It has standard lock signals. There is free flow access three hours either side of high water.

Once inside, Guys Quay and West Quay are to port and Sutton Marina itself is dead ahead. The marina does not have dedicated visitors’ berths but staff will direct you to your berth and take your lines, ensuring the ultimate stress free mooring experience.

cruising groundsThe West Country is blessed with a plethora of beautiful cruising destinations:

When it comes to day sailing, you can’t really do better than a quick trip across Plymouth Sound to the quaint villages of Cawsand and Kingsand.

Once these little villages were the haunt of smugglers, these days, with picturesque woodland tumbling down to the water’s edge to the south and a sparkling beach out in front, they are ideal destinations for a spot of lunch if you are on a day sail from Plymouth.

Beyond that, there’s plenty of scope for weekend cruising. Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Dartmouth all an easy weekend sail away and head south and into Cornwall where you will be spoilt for choice, Fowey, Falmouth, you name it, they’re all within easy reach of Plymouth and are all beautiful places to visit. Longer trips could easily take in both the Channel Islands and the Scilly Isles, not to mention France.

BerthingStaff at Sutton harbour always make a point of helping first time visitors on to their berth. Contact them by calling the lock on VHF Channel 12.

Facilities The Marina offers every kind of luxury you would expect of a modern marina, and a few more:

Free Wifi, laundry and ironing room, free parking, fuel, free pump out, and an internet café to name but a few. If you choose to keep your boat at Sutton, you will benefit from the visitor refund scheme, whereby if you are away cruising, your berth can be sub-let to visitors and you are refunded a percentage of the cost.

HEAD to the South Coast and its often difficult to find a quiet corner to gather your thoughts as the rush and hubbub of daily life rumbles around you.

The village of Emsworth, however, offers a small oasis of tranquility on the road between Portsmouth and Chichester.

Its narrow streets and market square speak of more relaxed times. Approach by boat and the journey is tranquility itself; the shallow waters of the Emsworth channel leading you to the cobbled quayside.

This quay used to be at the very heart of the UK’s oyster fishing industry, but now is a sleepy spot with only the occasional yacht pulling alongside to disturb the peace.

About 30 seconds walk from the quayside is Fat Olives, a restaurant well in touch with its nautical heritage, not least because the restaurant is actually a converted 17th century fisherman’s cottage. Proprietors Lawrence and Julia

Murphy have been running the place for 12 years and have built up a reputation during that time for fine cuisine freshly cooked on the premises.

Julia explained their philosophy: “We specialize in modern English cuisine with just a twist of Mediterranean for a bit of flair.

“Everything is freshly made in house and we also try to ensure that we source our ingredients as locally as possible.”

This means that the local Emsworth based fishermen get a look in, as Lawrence said: “There are two fishermen operating out of Emsworth these days and generally if they’re heading in, they’ll call ahead and ask me if I’m interested in anything they’ve caught.”

Despite this, Fat Olives does not purely specialize in seafood and the restaurant tends to change its menu with the seasons to ensure the freshest produce is always on offer.

The restaurant has proven a popular

choice with boaters visiting Emsworth, and in summer there is generally a regular stream of nautical coves passing through their doors.

“Emsworth is tidal, which can be an issue if you want to moor up alongside the quay,” said Julia: “But there is a waiting pontoon lower down the channel which never dries out and from there you can either row, or Sid, the harbourmaster runs a water taxi service which can be raised on VHF ch14.”

Once seated, prepare for a treat: Julia and Lawrence’s strict adherence to preparing freshly cooked local produce shines through; producing a mouthwatering mix. Here is their recommended choice for dinner:Starter: Crab, Romanesco and Pickled Ginger Salad: £8.25Main: Roast Grouse, Muscat Pumpkin, Trompettes, Roasting Juices: £26.50 Dessert: Baked Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Brownie, White Chocolate Sorbet.

SMALL SEAJUST FOR KIDS

ATALL AT SEA OCTOBER 2011

Sophie and Sam

IT WAS a very special day for 12-year-old Harrison Faull on September 18 when he powered his way to the top of the winner’s podium in the fi nal of the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship in the 8-12 age group.

Harrison, who was representing the Southern region and Parkstone Yacht Club, blasted around the course, which included a slalom run, 3600 reverse and stop exercise, in an impressive 1:11:15 seconds some four seconds faster than second place competitor Gary Fekkes from Northern Ireland, to clinch the winners’ title.

We asked Harrison a few questions about the Championship and his win.

Have you taken part in the Championship before? No, this is my fi rst year competing in the championship. At the start of August I took part in the Southern regional fi nals and won my age group, so got to come along to the fi nal here at the Southampton Boat Show.

How do you feel about winning?I had a really good day and still can’t believe that I actually won. It was such a surprise when they called my name as the results had been keep secret and I didn’t know I had won until it was announced in the presentation and I had to go up on the podium to collect my gold medal.

What was the most diffi cult part of the course?I found the slalom the most challenging thing to do because the tide was strong and was pushing the boat around.

How many other competitors were there? There were 28 of us competing in the two classes (8-12 and 13-16), so I had to beat 13 other competitors.

What were your biggest worries for the day?I was worried that I might not be able to take part as I sprained by ankle playing football just a few days ago and was having to use crutches but luckily I still managed to complete the course.

What did you win?I won a Honwave T40 RIB with BF20 engine for my club. I can’t wait for the other kids at the club to see it but hopefully I’ll get to have the fi rst go!

What do you love about driving a RIB?I love being able to drive a RIB because it’s really good fun and you can go really fast.

What would you say to other kids thinking about having a go at the championship?Have a go, it’s really good fun. You should try it.

Will you back to defend your title next year?I will defi nitely be back next year, for sure.

In the older age group (13-16) it was 16-year-old Ben Edwards, also from the Southern Region and Parkstone Yacht Club who took the winner’s spot, this time winning a Ribcraft 4.8m RIB with BF60 engine for the club.

BOOKSOCTOBER 2011

ALL AT SEA OCTOBER 2011

AS we head for autumn’s shorter days and longer evenings All at Sea focuses on books about boating as reading about our favourite pastime becomes almost as much fun as getting on the water.

LOFTING A BOATUNTIL you pick up this book you might not be completely sure what ‘lofting’ is and there are probably plenty more in this state of blissful ignorance.

It turns out it’s the stage in traditional boatbuilding that takes the builder from the designer’s small scale sketches, known as the lines drawing and table of offsets, to the process of ‘laying down’ or drawing the boat full size in three different views.

The fi rst thought though is that it would be highly unlikely that human minds would not have completely circumvented this clearly tedious stage by 2011, but that’s not completely correct.

According to page fi ve “In these days of CAD and plans where the Body Plan has been drawn full size and other information supplied as a scaled of dimensioned drawing, it’s tempting to forget about the boat and just get on with building it.” But apparently, “While there’s nothing wrong with doing this, lofting a boat gives us the opportunity to correct any errors in the Offset Table or Lines Drawing which may have accidentally occurred at the drafting stage. It also helps when the time comes to pick up all of the constructional information needed to build the backbone or make the mould stations.”

Lofting gets its name from the loft or area in which the drawings are made. Beyond that it starts to get rather more complicated as the lofting grid is laid out and rabbet, sheer and station lines are plotted.

By page 30 you may be fairly sure that you won’t be lofting a boat any time soon but you will have developed a respect for anybody who has.

Reading about the method of marking the measurements on the loft fl oor using ancient methods including ‘trammels’, ‘tick sticks’, ‘buttocks’ and ‘lofting weights’ is like a glimpse into another, almost forgotten world.

REPLACING YOUR BOAT’S ENGINE THERE are certain books that will always cater for the niche market and it’s probably fair to say that this one is about as tightly jammed into a niche as its possible to go.

The title pretty much says it all: If you’re looking to re rig your boat, then this publication probably isn’t up your alley. If, however, you happen to be replacing your engine, then this will doubtless serve as a useful companion.

It seems very thorough and accessible. The only worry is that if ever you do fi nd yourself where you require an engine to be replaced, it will differ so wildly from the case study featured for the book to be of any use. To be fair though, even if this was the case, the £20 you had spent on the book would be small change compared to the £3k or so you spent on the engine.

THE CRUISING ALMANACTHE latest installment of the Cruising Asssociation’s Cruising Almanac looks jolly useful, made even better by the fact that it is now published annually. If you have never looked further than Reed’s Almanac a browse through this will impress. Many of the charts are of a larger scale and there also seemed, on fi rst inspection, to be more ports covered (Ravenglass and Hayle as two obscure examples). In addition, the tide tables come in a separate booklet supplied with the almanac. Some may see this as a blessing, others a curse but it is mighty handy, although compared to Reeds, it is less easy to deduce when the spring and neap tides occur. Reeds has idiot proof colour coding.

It’s always good to have an alternative to Reeds and you can tell that this has been put together by cruising experts who know what the average cruiser is after in terms of information.

AMAZING SAILING STORIESTHIS is like a greatest hits of all of the best nautical yarns from the past few centuries.

It’s generally a winner on Christmas Day as you can retire into an armchair, possibly sipping on a glass of port and while away the hours of madness in your own little world.

This particular version has been compiled by Dick Durham and it does seem to have a rather morbid fi xation with death and doom. Chapter headings illustrate the point: Death at the Helm, Psychopaths in the Fo’cs’le, Killer Storm, Fatal Delivery Trip, The Dead lay in Her Wake . . . the list goes on. It’s a bit like reading a succession of those awful Reader’s Digest ‘drama in real life stories’. Read too many and you eventually feel disinclined to leave the house.

Don’t go near the water, it’s extremely dangerous!

Adnams raises the spiritsADNAMS of Southwold is famous for its real ales in pubs from Maldon to Lowestoft, which is also stocked in bottle form in supermarkets all over the Home Counties.

Now Adnams has become distinguished as the UK’s only brewery licensed to distill spirits and brew beer on the same premises.

With the big difference in duty levels on the output, the Excise men used not to like the idea of the same barley mash starting point being used for both beer or spirit production but modern computer controls have persuaded them, at least at Adnams, to let it happen.

The result is Adnams Copper House Distillery, built right next to the brewery in the heart of town, producing gins, vodkas and new whisky spirit which, after three years oak-barrel maturing, will emerge as Adnams English whisky. Meantime, the gins and vodkas are ready for imbibing.

Adnams First Rate Finest Cut Gin 48 per cent abv ‘boutique’ strength is the premium offering, very fl owery and complex in fl avour. The added botanicals are of necessity based around juniper, with 12 more such as coriander and orange peel. The master distiller recommends strip cuts of cucumber in the glass (so you get more of the fl eshy part exposed to the gin) and Fever Tree tonic.

The end result is a very distinctive, elegant G&T worth the premium price of £25 for a 50cl bottle. It comes in an attractive box featuring a deck-eye view of a masthead spinnaker, a splendid gift for a sailor.

The regular Adnams Distilled Gin is 40 per cent abv (still higher than the UK mass market 37.5 per cent norm) with just six botanicals, delivering a simpler crisp fl avour. Another boutique production at a premium price, £24 for the 70cl bottle.

The Adnams Vodka range is also interesting. Adnams Copper House Barley Vodka is produced from local barley. Distilling takes the spirit to an exceptionally high 96 per cent abv before reduction to 40 per cent for bottling. This is very pure but still

has a discernable pleasant barley fl avour. It’s premium English vodka, so £23 for 70cl bottle.

Longshoreman Vodka is from a unique wheat, barley and oats mash, bottled at a robust 48 per cent abv, smooth and creamy at £24 for 50cl. North Cove Oak Aged vodka is even stronger at 50 per cent and has a gentle amber colour from the oak aging. At this strength and £26 a 50cl bottle, this is for sipping over ice for an excellent vodka martini.

These are new brands so not yet distributed everywhere. They’re in all 90 Adnams pubs and Cellar & Kitchen shops, mainly in East Anglia but there’s one in Richmond, London. Or source on line www.cellarandkitchen.adnams.co.uk.

Adnams beers are in all the best waterside sailors’ pubs and clubs in Essex and Suffolk, guest ales in many others and regularly stocked in supermarkets in the south-east.

The classic Adnams Bitter at 4.5 per cent abv is copper brown, bitter sweet with a barley aroma. Broadside is a premium gem, not that much stronger at 4.7 per cent but is deep mahogany with a fuller fl avour. Lighthouse is a light, golden, summer beer for easy thirst quenching at a gentle 3.4 per cent abv. A great kickoff pedigree for the new Adnams spirits.
