The Edwards Brothers tried to

push out Tejano families already

living around Nacogdoches to

start a new colony.

Mexico sided with the Tejano families. The Edwards brothers took over Nacogdoches and

claimed it as an independent country called Fredonia. Mexico put an end to the rebellion but began to worry

that other settlers might want to try to split from Mexico.
