BUILD YOUR FOUNDATION TIMELINE: 2–3 months Everyone who wants to code or design websites needs to start with a good foundation. During this phase, you’ll design and build a simple portfolio website from scratch, and learn what working in tech is all about.

YOU’LL LEARN:

● Design Fundamentals & Tools - the basics of designing for the Web ● HTML & CSS - the coding skills used to build and add styles to all websites ● Git - A version control system that ALL developers need to know

❏ Skillcrush 107: Visual Design Fundamentals & Tools Learn the basic principles of designing for the web, including how to create user personas, color schemes, typescales, wireframes, and visual hierarchy.

❏ Skillcrush 101: HTML & CSS

Learn the fundamentals of HTML & CSS, the foundational coding languages that all websites are built on.

❏ Milestone Project: Build and Launch a Website

Design, code, and launch your very own personally branded portfolio website.

❏ Skillcrush 105: Git & GitHub Learn the basics of these essential collaboration and version control tools.

❏ Final Assessment Pass a multiple-choice final assessment to reinforce everything you’ve learned so far and get your certificate of completion for Phase 1.

BY THE END OF PHASE 1:

You will have built a personal portfolio website—a requirement for getting work in tech—and be ready to pick your specialization.

CHOOSE A TRACK TIMELINE: 3 months With a solid tech foundation, it’s time for you to start specializing. At this stage, you can choose to dive deeper into design or jump into more advanced coding. In Phase 2, you’ll also have the opportunity to map out additional courses with your Career Counselor depending on your goals and specialization desires.

DESIGNER TRACK Learn the fundamentals of designing in the digital age, including all the tools and skills you need to get hired as a freelance or full-time designer. SUPPORT:

● Regular Feedback Sessions for your given class (at least twice weekly) ● An active community of classmates and instructors ● Instructors available to answer questions by email

THE CURRICULUM:

❏ Skillcrush 207: Branding & Identity Design Learn how to build & design a company’s brand and identity, including how to create audience profiles, mission statements, logos, and a style guide.

❏ Skillcrush 307: Visual Design Professional Learn how to successfully launch a brand, including how to lay out and design a professional landing page, iterate based on feedback and kickstart your career as a visual designer.

❏ Milestone Project This is all about bringing your new design skills into the “real world” to network, show off what you’ve learned, and continue learning from others.

❏ Additional Specialization Classes (Optional): Give your skill set a boost by choosing an area of specialization, such as responsive web design. You’ll work with your Career Counselor to map out your chosen classes - see the Sample Career Paths at the bottom of this syllabus to get a feel for your options!

❏ Final Assessment

Pass a multiple-choice final assessment to get your certificate of completion before moving on to Phase 3… and getting hired!

DEVELOPER TRACK Take your coding skills to the next level, including how to code responsive websites, make them interactive using JavaScript, and much more. SUPPORT:

● Regular Office Hours for your given class (at least twice weekly) ● An active community of classmates and instructors ● Instructors available to answer questions by email

THE CURRICULUM:

❏ Skillcrush 102: JavaScript Learn the JavaScript programming principles you need to get started as a developer, including computational thinking, algorithms, objects, loops, arrays, and more.

❏ Skillcrush 206: Responsive Web Development Learn the process for developing responsive web designs, including how to set up your code, set breakpoints for different screen sizes, make responsive typography and images, and coding responsive layouts.

❏ Milestone Project

This is all about bringing your new design skills into the “real world” to network, show off what you’ve learned and continue learning from others.

❏ Additional Specialization Classes (Optional): Give your skill set a boost by choosing an area of specialization, such as WordPress or Ruby. You’ll work with your Career Counselor to map out your chosen classes - see the Sample Career Paths at the bottom of this syllabus to get a feel for your options!

GO PRO TIMELINE: 2-3 months Now that you have the skills you need, it’s all about what YOU want. In this phase, you’ll work with your career counselor to decide on the what success looks like for you, whether that’s freelancing, working remotely, or working full-time. You’ll also get the opportunity to expand your skill set by cherry-picking from Skillcrush’s complete library of classes.

If a freelance career is for you, your career counselor will guide you through the steps of building your very own freelance business. Your career counselor will help you make sure your marketing materials are irresistible, source ideal clients, and bid on promising gigs!

SAMPLE PATH 1: VISUAL DESIGNER AVERAGE SALARY: $87,000 TIMELINE: 6-9 months Visual designers are digital artists and strategists. They’re the creative visionaries behind everything from your favorite websites and apps to brand logos and ebook covers. They are the graphic designers of the digital world we live in, and they play a crucial role in designing the online experiences we interact with every day. Working primarily on digital projects (rather than print), visual designers hone the strategy and visual identities of brands by designing color, typography, and layout using industry tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. SAMPLE PATH 3: MOBILE & WEB DESIGNER AVERAGE SALARY: $61,000 TIMELINE: 6-9 months Web designers are artisans and true digital creatives. Steve Jobs famously said, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” The best web designers know that good web design is nearly invisible but utterly delightful.
