A New Look!It feels as if Spring is finally in the air, after a long winter. During the winter months we here at All About Magazines have been busy giving the magazine a new look with help from designers at Independent Design. Its been hard work, but I am happy we have a fresh new feel to the pages. While the magazine was refreshed, our team has been busy creating a new website, with webbuilders Hughes Media, where you’ll find even more local information. The internet is an increasingly important part of many people’s lives, and we want to meet an increasing demand for local information online. So with the start of a new season, there’s change in the air! Do please let me know what you think of the new look.

Enjoy the start of Spring!

Every first Saturday of the month between 10am and 2pm a Farmers Market is taking place at the Old Rectory in the village. A real community effort in response to the wishes of local villagers.

Ken Nason tells us about the plans, and the hard work involved in setting up a new Farmers’ Market for CradleyTwo years ago, people in Cradley were asked about their needs and wants, as part of a review into the Parish Plan. Out of that extensive questionnaire was one overwhelming wish, “We want a monthly market in Cradley”.

Last year Cradley Village Hall management committee applied for and received a grant to purchase some market stalls and a marquee for village use, which were delivered in time for last year’s highly successful 3 Villages Festival. Then in November, thanks to the Old Rectory in Cradley, the first Farmers’ Market was held in their large garden.

For more information, please look at www.cradleymart.com

CradleyFarmers Market

Main feature

Local food traders from in and around the area came to the market and offered a good selection of fish, meats, green groceries, fruit, drinks, cakes, breads, chutneys & preserves, eggs and cheese. Even during December, January and February when other markets close, Cradley Farmers Market continued to serve an ever increasing flow of eager buyers for the fresh local produce on offer.

This success story of local people satisfying the wants and needs of the local community must show that the people of Cradley already have their own “Big Society”. So come on down to the village between 10am and 2pm on the first Saturday in every month and enjoy our Farmers’ Market.

So why the new look? The magazine is now three years old and we decided it was time to update the look.I created the original layout with help from my brother, who’s a successful designer, but decided to call in specialist help from Independent Design, a team experienced in magazine production. We want it to be a pleasure to look at, easy to browse through, and a showcase for the many amazing people and businesses in our area. Of course the content remains 100 percent local.

New websiteWe’ve also decided to increase our offering online, with the launch of a new website. It looks lively and fresh, and will be regularly updated with ‘What’s On’ information about the local area. There are longer features to read and a directory of local businesses, so if you need a plumber at short notice, or you’re looking for somewhere for a night out, you’ll find what you need quickly and easily. We hope the new website will help to bring our service to a different audience. We timed its launch to coincide with the new look magazine.

Free online guideThe website will give you a free online guide for a variety of local services, products, businesses and events. Our What’s On section will give you information about local group meetings, events, workshops and much more. You can search it by

All About... exciting changes

After three years of publishing it was time for a revamp and a new addition. The results; a fresh new look for the magazines and a brand new website for people living on and around the Malvern Hills. All designed to give you more local information.

www.allaboutmalvernhills.comThe website, designed by Hughes Media, will be live from Monday 2nd April. After that date we will continue to put more and more local information on, so watch this space! We will update you via the magazine on a regular basis.

date, place or topic and will be up to date every day. You will also find a local group directory where you can search what goes on in the community locally. Our ‘Local Life’ section features events, places, history, sport and local information in more detail. I am also very proud to offer you a ‘Locally Made’ section, which will show you what our locally based creative people have to offer. Local produce, photography, arts & crafts and more. And where people, groups or businesses have their own website, you will be able to click through to find out more.Have a look on or after 2nd April, it will be well worth an internet visit!

Your feedbackAlthough the internet is an increasingly important part of many people’s live, the magazine remains at heart of what we do, it will continue to pop through your door. Many people tell me how much they enjoy receiving it, and overwhelmingly it remains the most important thing we produce.

Of course we value constructive feedback, so if there’s anything you’d like to see in the magazine or on the website, or changes you think might benefit it, then please drop us a line, we’d love to hear from you.

How did you become involved in this event?Having grown up in West Malvern, and having many happy childhood memories of events in the village I wanted to do something special to commemorate Britain hosting the Olympics. So myself and a small committee, including Karen Surrell, Head Teacher of St James CE Primary School, and Andrew Cave of Regents College have got together to organise the ‘West Malvern Olympicnic’. It happens on Sunday 24th June at Regents College. We have also had a lot of help from the lovely people at the Community Games Inititive.

Why did you decide to organise this? The event aims to bring the village community together. There is a genuine neighbourly spirit and warmth amongst villagers, and we wanted to build on that. That’s the spirit of the Olympics after all, unity, friendship and peace. It also seemed too good an opportunity to waste for a bit of a do!

What will happen on the day?The day will start with a parade from the village school to Regents College, the pupils are creating themed costumes for this. There will be a torch, and a traditional opening ceremony. The main day revolves around a traditional school sports day, but is much wider than that. All village children will be welcome to join in regardless of what school they go to. There will be displays about the Olympics, a barbeque, food and refreshments. We will have sporty and silly family events, with team events for the various groups in the village to compete in. There will also be more serious challenging events including a triathlon, for those not indulging in cream teas!

All About... The Olympicnic

West Malvern is to have its own event to mark the 2012 Games, called the ‘Olympicnic’. Anna Brook, who’s helping to organise it, tells us more.

The West Malvern Olympicnic takes place on Sunday 24th June at Regents College, West Malvern.

Did West Malvern have other events like this in the past? When I was little, St James Girls School (now Regents College) would host an annual village fete, with maypole dancing, traditional events, and one year even helicopter rides! They are a fond memory of many villagers and it will be wonderful to bring everyone together in that same space 20 years on.

Do you need more help to organise the day?Yes, we now need to get a few more people involved on the committee, and it would be great to have support from some of the sporty lot around the village. We will need a lot of stewards on the day and are also seeking small donations (£50 or £100) from businesses or individuals. The real icing on the cake for us however would be to secure some exciting people for the event, a sporting celebrity maybe, or an inspirational figure to come and talk to the children on the day. There is also one more thing, can anyone lend me a tug of war rope?!

Well here we are back to the Spring madness on the nursery. There is so much to do at this time of year, if you are a grower; seedlings need pricking out, young plants potting on, there are cuttings to be sorted, weeding, the list is endless. But I do try to find time to appreciate the explosion of life that comes with Spring, it is so exciting watching

all my pots full of bare soil come to life!We are once again organising our Eco Area at the Malvern Spring Garden Show. This year’s theme is ‘Art in the Garden’. We will have some wonderful garden sculptures included in our show garden as well

as displayed around the area. When we started researching sculptors and other artists it was amazing how many extremely talented people there are just in our locality. As well as the’ Art’ exhibitors we will also have our ‘Eco’ exhibitors who will be selling wormeries, copper tools, organic herbs, vegetables and Herbaceous Perennials. There’s also products from locally coppiced woodland, green gardening products and compost. There will also be demonstrations of willow sculpture, hurdle making, tool sharpening, chestnut fencing and even how to make silk roses. As well as all that, we also have to build two gardens. Our permanent garden will be planted with a selection of flowering plants as a showcase for our Garden Design and Nursery. The show garden, which we will build from scratch, is called The Creative Hand and will incorporate a mix of sculpture and planting. So, lots of hard work and excitement ahead, but the fantastic feedback we always get from visitors makes it all worth while! If you want to visit the Malvern Spring Garden Show, it is running from 10th to 13th May and if you book early there are discounted tickets. Bridget

IngredientsYou will need oil for shallow frying and a selection of vegetables

For the batter:• 100g plain flour• 50g corn flour• large pinch of salt• ½ tsp baking powder• 200ml ice cold sparkling Holywell Malvern Spring Water

Makes 24, ready in 30 minutesWash and chop a selection of vegetables into large bite sized pieces - brocolli, cauliflower, peppers, babycorn and pea pods work well.

Sift the plain flour, corn flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl.Pour in the sparkling water and whisk well to produce a light batter. Place a handful of vegetables in the batter. Heat some oil in a shallow pan or wok. When the oil is hot carefully add the first vegetable piece taking care that the oil does not spit. Add four more pieces and cook until golden on one side.Carefully turn with a slotted spoon. Remove when golden and drain on kitchen paper.Continue cooking the vegetables in batches.Serve with a dipping sauce or chutney.

The Players perform a ‘witty and wicked’ version of an English classicA modern take on Chaucer’s Tales which may not suit the over-sensitive

For their next show, Cradley Village Players present a witty and wicked update of a much-loved classic. The Canterbury Tales - a play adapted from Geoffrey Chaucer’s famous original by writer Phil Woods and actor Michael Bogdanov - is dangerous, touching and fun. CVP are staging the play at Cradley School from Wednesday 11th to Saturday 14th April 2012 - the week immediately after Easter.

Experience real theatrical riches as director Meg Monk and her cast bring you some of Chaucer’s best loved stories including The Knight’s Tale, The Reeve’s Tale, The Wife of Bath’s Tale, The Nun’s Priest’s Tale and The Miller’s Tale.

‘Anyone who found Chaucer’s medieval language dry or difficult when forced to read it at school should think again’ Meg says, ‘for these

Canterbury Tales from Cradley Village Players

are among the most romantic, moral and farcical tales ever told. And in this modern-language version, everything is easy to follow as larger-than-life characters reveal human nature at its most honourable and its most base - all done with a smile and a song’.

‘The show does contain a few suggestive scenes and a little bawdy language and we suspect it may not suit the very young or easily offended,’ Meg adds. ‘For everyone else, we promise an evening of colourful, compelling and good-spirited entertainment that you won’t want to miss’.
