The earliest known documentation of bocce comes from artwork found in an Egyptian tomb that dates back to 5200 B.C. The first bocce balls were smooth stones, and later, Romans used coconuts, then balls carved from olive wood. Modern bocce, which gets its name from the Italian word for “bowls,” is played on a narrow court made of packed dirt or gravel. A small ball, called a jack, pallino, boccino or pig, is tossed onto the court and becomes the target. Players or teams then compete by rolling or lobbing larger bocce balls to get closest to the jack. The game is similar to English lawn bowling and French pentanque, and is suitable for players of all ages and athletic abilities. Famous bocce fans in history include Leonardo da Vinci, Queen Elizabeth I, George Washington, and 19th-century Italian military leader Giuseppe Garibaldi, who is credited with helping spread bocce’s popularity throughout the world. This familiar face is the one you always see at the front desk: Darlene. Darlene has done an amazing job as our administrative assistant. She is very orderly, she is a hard worker, she has a deep care for all of the residents, and she has a very kind personality. We are extremely grateful to have employees such as Darlene, and we rejoice in her numerous gifts and talents she brings to Lake Forest Park. Dear Lake Forest Friends, Family, and Residents, It is a wonderful privilege to have the opportunity to continue to serve you here at Lake Forest Park. It is our great hope that as you live here, you continue to enjoy a peaceful, encouraging, healthy, and happy way of life. We are always here to serve you and to enrich your life as much as we possibly can. As for the month of September, get ready to get all those fall season decorations out. As they say, after Labor Day, we officially kick off entering into the final months of the year, which bring about many enjoyable holidays. Also, for our big party this month, we will be hosting an ‘80s-themed party. Get ready to wear an ‘80s hairdo along with your neon clothes, as this will be a party to remember. As always, have a wonderful month and know that I am here if you need me. All About BocceThere are countless sports that involve aiming a ball at a target, but bocce may be the oldest of them all.
