All about Ayurveda
Ayurveda is an ancient Indian Medical Science. The origin of Ayurveda can be traced
back to Vedas. Ayurveda is the holistic healing science. It comprises of both practical &
scientific information on various subjects beneficial to the man kind. Ayurvedic treatment
does not suppresses the main symptoms and create new ones as a side effects. Ayurveda
removes the main root cause of the ailments and provide the permanent relief. Ayurveda
is a huge collection of interrelated practices that encompass literally every aspect of a
person’s health and life style.
This health system emphasizes the science of longevity, in particular, while focusing on
promoting good health through out the lengthened life.
Some times Ayurveda is also called as THE MOTHER OF ALL AILMENTS.
According to Ayurveda Vatasana, (the descent of Ayurveda) the origin of Ayurveda is
stated to be a divine revolution of a the ancient Indian creator, Lord Brahma, as he awake
to recreate the Universe. This Knowledge was passed directly to Daksha Prajapati in the
form of Shlokas sung by lord Brahma, and this in turn was passed down through a
successive chain of duties to Lord Indra (the protector of Dharma). According to this
account, the first human exponent of Ayurveda was Bhardwaj, who learnt it Directly
from Lord Indra. Bhardwaj in turn taught Ayurveda to a group of assembled Sages, who
then passed down different aspects of this knowledge to their students.
According to tradition, Ayurveda was first described in a text form by Agnivesha, in his
book called Agnivesha Tantra. The book was later translated by Maharishi Charak and is
known as Charak Samhita. Another early text of Ayurveda is the Sushrut Samhita, which
is an addition to Charak Samhita, served as the textual material in the ancient university
of Takshila and Nalanda. These text are believed to have been written around the
beginning of the common era and are based on the holistic approach rooted in the
philosophy of the Vedas and Vedic culture.
Ayurveda and Diet
The premium quality of traditional herbal food supplements is to maintain youthfulness
and to prevent imbalances of psyche, soma, and soul. Be careful and plant your diet
according to the nature of your body, many food you eat could be the cause of health
problem, even if they are highly nutritive.
According to the Ayurvedic text, “let your food be your medicine and your medicine to
be your food”. The ayurvedic physicians always begin to cure the disease by arranging
the diet that is to be followed by a patient. They (Ayurvedic physicians) also declare that
all the diseases can be cured by following dietic rules carefully. But if the patient does
not attend do his diet, a hundred good medicines will not cure him. Why to eat a food
which is not accepted by your body. The faulty eating habits are the way to invite the
various diseases and ailments.
There are plenty of alternative and beneficial foods available, just identify them for your
body.
Principles of Ayurveda
A healthy body and a healthy mind is the main aim of any medical system. Ayurveda is
one such system that travels since 5000 years ago. The word Ayurveda is composed of
“Ayu”& “Veda”. Ayu means life which is a proper combination of body, mind, sense
organs & soul and veda means knowledge. So knowledge of Healthy life is “Ayurveda”.
Ayurveda is the science of life which is meticulously developed by various rishis. This is
the study based on the fundamental principles of panchbhutas, which comprises of Earth,
Water, Air, Fire and Space. These panchbhuta’s are existing in the nature & in the human
body. Ayurveda helps to attain a harmonious balance of Sapt Dhatus of the body, which
enables you to enjoy a Healthy life.
These five elements in turn combines with each other to give rise to three bio physical
forces or the Doshas with in the human body.
Vata - Air and Space
Pitta – Fire and Water
Kapha – Water and Earth
Together these are known as tri Doshas and these Tri-Doshas governs all the biological,
physiological and psychological functions of the mind and body, both physical and
emotional as well as affects how an individual interacts with every thing around them.
Every individual within them has these three biological forces, but it is the dominance of
any one or two or all three doshas that makes up a person’s individual constitution and
according to Ayurveda, it is called Prakriti.
As these five elements fluctuate within the nature, these elements accordingly also
fluctuate within the body. Therefore, the Doshas dominance changes with age, time of
day or night and according to the season. Ayurveda seeks to treat the mind and body
according to the person’s Doshas, using a system combining Diet, detoxification, YOGA,
ayurvedic massage, lifestyle routine and behaviors, which stimulates positive emotions.
Tri-Doshas
According to Ayurveda, the Human body is constituted of 5 elements, i.e., (ether), (air),
(fire), (water) and (earth). Collectively these 5 elements give rise to three bodily humors
and are called tri-doshas, Vata, Pitta Kapha.
Our all the physical and mental functions are controlled by these three doshas. It is very
important to maintain the balance of these three doshas, as the balance between these
Doshas helps us to maintain good health. Each Dosha is a combination of any two of the
five elements (the Panch Bhootas).
Since these three doshas are responsible for all the physiological and psychological
processes within the body and mind and as a result our physical activity, mental
capabilities, our physical energy and emotional status can be measured with the help of
these doshas.
Vata is a combination of Air and space
Pitta is combination of fire and water
Kapha is a combination of water and earth
According to Charak Samhita, Vata, pitta and Kapha maintains the integrity of all the
living human organisms in the normal state. Whenever there is an imbalance, the person
becomes sick.
The Doshas
Vata
The vata is generally identified as cosmic elements of Vayu or Air and Akash or ether.
This controls all types of movements and is responsible for respiration too. This is the
kinetic force in all types of biological forms and controls the bodies auto functions, have
impulses, respiration, circulation, elimination and heart beat. In case of imbalance in Vta
prakriti, who are quick in their mental process and initiation of action, tends to suffer
from neurological disorders. The diseases are pronounced in the old age. The period of
old age is also called Vata kala. The diseases mostly affects the lower parts of the body,
since they are the pre dominant seats of Vata Doshas.
Pitta
The pitta consists of Agni or Tej. It is also called element of heat energy. It is responsible
for maintenance of body heat and transforming in nature. All types of outside elements an
individual takes in are transport into the inside element of the body. It controls the
digestion and proper assimilation. Pitta is responsible for metabolism in organs and tissue
system. The person of this type are quick in action and normally possesses a very good
intellect as well as grasping power. The Pitta Prakriti persons are prone to the diseases of
digestive disorders and metabolic systems. Generally the pitta disorders occurs during the
middle age as this is the period of Pitta kala.
Kapha
Kapha is responsible for structural integrity and stability of mind and body. Kapha people
have tendency to put on weight. They are more energetic and have more concentration of
mind. Kapha is a conceptual equilibrium of water and earth. Kapha is structural and
lubrication, one can visualize the Kapha force as the stiming force to separate the water
and earth. Kapha cements the elements of the body and provide the material for physical
structure. This maintains the body’s resistance (immunity). Water is the main constituent
of the Kapha and this bodily water is responsible for physiological and natural tissue
resistance in the body. Kapha lubricates the joints, provides moisture to the skin and
helps to heal wounds. Each of the dosha has certain quantity, quality and functions. When
all the Doshas are balanced, it is called balanced or normal state (Sama Dosha) and the
condition is conductive of good health.
Each of the dosha has certain quantity and quality and functions. When all the Doshas are
balanced, it is called normal or the balanced state (Sam doshas) and the condition is a
conductive of good health.
Normal State of Tri-Dosha
When the Tri-Dosha are balanced, the individual experiences health at all the levels,
mental, physical and spiritual. This is much more than the mere absence of disease. The
following area helps to define what Ayurveda consider as a health:
1. Happiness: Sense of well being.
2. Emotions: Evenly balanced emotional status.
3. Mental functions: Good memory and intelligence.
4. Senses: Proper functioning of eyes, ear, nose, taste and touch.
5. Digestion: Easy digestion of food and drinks.
6. Elimination: Normal elimination or wastes.
7. Physical Body: Healthy bodily tissues, organs and systems.
Significance of Panchkarma
There are two systems of treatment in Ayurveda. One is to pacify the aggravated tri-
dosha’s by using or recommending a proper diet according to season, natural herbs and
various minerals & certain developed Herbal products and the other is to detoxify the
body by eliminating the increased dosha’s from the body.
To detoxify the body, five different procedures have been described in the Ayurvedic
texts. These five procedures are collectively called PanchKarma (the five actions).
Panchkarma is the three fold therapy. Panchkarma does not just eliminates the toxins
from the body also rejuvenates the body. There are certain types to be followed before
doing Panchkarma and are called PurvaKarma. Panchkarma is actually a group of 5 types
of treatment, all of which are not commonly practiced in all the diseases. The
Panchkarma consists of Vamana, virechana, Snehavata, Kashyavarti, Nasya.
This series of 5 therapies helps to remove deep rooted stress and illness causing toxins
from the body while balancing the Tri-Dosha (energies that governs the biological
functions of the body). Panchkarma is ineffective if special detoxification diet is not
given along with the treatment. Panchkarma plays a vital role, both to maintain the health
and to eliminate the disease. Although Panchkarma is often thought of as the complete
procedure, it is only one part of group of therapies, belongs to a class of cleansing
procedures called Shodhana. In this chemical oriented atmosphere, people are more prone
to diseases like indigestion, chronic fatigue, heart diseases, diabetes, etc. The importance
of Panchkarma is borne out by the fact that this is applicable to all cases, covering a wide
range of preventive and curative conditions. All the diseases are caused by deeply seated
toxins in the body. With the help of Panchkarma, toxins can be eliminated from the body,
allowing permanent healing of tissues, channels, digestion and mental health.
Vamana : Therapeutic Vomiting or Emesis
Virechan: Purgation
Basti : Enema
Nasya : Elimination of toxins from nose
Raktamoksha: Blood Letting
Vaman: Emesis Therapy
When there is a congestion in the lungs causing repeated attacks of Bronchitis cold,
cough or Asthama. The Ayurvedic treatment is therapeutic vomiting or Vaman to
eliminate the Kapha causing the excess of Mucus.
First after the Snehan and swedan, 3 to 4 glasses of licorice or salt water is administered,
then vomiting is stimulated by rubbing the tongue, which triggers the vomiting centre the
gag reflux. Once the mucas is released the patient will feel instantly relieved. It is likely
that congestion, wheezing and breathless will disappear and the sinuses will become
clear.
Therapeutic vomiting is also indicated in chronic Asthama, diabetes, chronic cold,
lymphatic congestion, chronic indigestion and edema.
Contra Indication: Vamana should not be done below the age of 12 and above the age of
60-65, during or prostate enlargement, one week of menstruation or during pregnancy.
Virechan: Purgation Therapy
Millions of functions are performed by the human body, which is a very complex type of
machine. Majority of the functions performed by the human body are voluntary and some
are involuntary. Millions of cells in the body are working through out the day to produce
energy and to maintain life. In this process lots of wastes are produced at the same level.
It is natural that some toxins accumulate in the body as a result of various metabolic
activity, which the body performs naturally. There are certain toxins that still remains in
the body causing many diseases like. Unless these wastes are expelled from the body,
they tends to stick into the minute channels and start producing diseases. Hence to be
healthy it is very important to eliminate these toxins from the body.
When excess bile or Pitta is secreted and accumulated in the gall bladder, lever or small
intestine, it tends to result in rashes, skin inflammation, ackne, chronic attacks of fever,
billary vomiting, nausea and jaundice. In these conditions therapeutic purgation or
therapeutic laxatives are recommended. As per Ayurveda, virechana is facilitated with
Senna leaves, flex seeds, psyllium husk, or triffla in a combination that is appropriate for
the individual person.
Contra Indication: Low Agni (Indigestion), acute fever, severe constipation, bleeding
from rectum, de-hydration and ulcerative colitis.
Basti: Enema
The term Basti has been derived from the fact that the Basti yantra (apparatus) used for
introducing medicated material is made from Basti or animal’s urinary bladder. Basti is
amongst the major Panchkarma procedure and is used to cure Vata disorder. In the
human body, the Vata predominant site is the Colon. The herbal concoction of sesam oil
and other herbal preparations is introduced in the rectum to induce the medicated enemas.
In general the Basti treatment is used to promote the elimination of loosened Vata dosha.
The Basti treatment alleviates constipation, distention, chronic fever, sexual disorder,
heart pain and hyper acidity. If the treatment is administered properly, Basti helps to
rejuvenate the body, provides strength and improves the complexion.
Basti should not be administered to a person suffering from breathing problem, chronic
abdominal problems, bleeding piles or diarrhea. According to Ayurvedic texts, there are 8
types of Basti(s)
1. Anuvasna
2. Niruha- Asthapana
3. Uttra Basti
4. Matra Basti
5. Karma Basti
6. Kala Basti
7. Yoga Basti
8. Baruhana Basti
Nasya Karma: Elimination of Toxins from nose
It is also known as Shiroverachan. It is equally important part of Panchkarma therapy.
The importance of administration of the treatment through nostrils has been practicised in
India since ages. Nasal douching with the clean and pure water early morning is
considered good for improving eye sight, prevents pre mature graying of hair, hair fall.
Purpose of performing Nasya Karma is to throw out the ventilated Doshas in the head
region. Nasya Karma is advised in diseases of head such as Sinusitis, Migraine and
diseases of eyes.
Types of Nasya
There are six main types of Nasya Karma:
1. Pradhamana (Virechan) Nasya: In this type, generally dry powder (Rather than
oils) are administered in the nostrils. Pardhamana Nasya is mainly used for Kapha
types of diseases, which involves headache, cold, nasal congestion, sticky eyes, in
some skin diseases and inflammation of nostrils.

and Ashwagandha ghee are used to remove Vata disorders. The nutritional Nasya
is generally is generally performed to treat the diseases like dried nose, anxiety,
fear, dizziness, stiffness of neck, dry sinuses and loss of sense of smell.
3. Shaman Nasya (Sedative Nasya): This form of Nasya Karma is performed to treat
the diseases like thinning of hair, conjunctivitis and ringing of ears in which Pitta
Dosha is prevalent. Generally medicated oils and herbal medicated decoctions are
used.
4. Navana Nasya (Decoction Nasya): It is used in Vata-Pitta or Kapha-pitta
disorders. Generally decoction of medicated oils are used to perform this type of
Nasya.
5. Marshya Nasya: Generally oils are used to perform this type of Nasya.
6. Pratimarshya Nasya: Daily oil Nasya is performed the little finger in the ghee or
oil and inserting the same in each nostril with gentle massage. This helps to open
deep tissue and can be done every day in order to release stress.
Raktamoksha Karma
Raktamoksha Karma is the last procedure adopted in the Panchkarma therapy. It is also
called blood letting. The procedure is adopted for cleansing the blood. If the various
toxins are accumulated in the blood and circulated through out the body can cause
repeated infections, hypertensions and similar other blood related problems. These toxins
are driven out by the Raktamoksha Karma. This is generally advised in cases of enlarged
river, in Gout and in cases of snake, scorpion or dog bite.
There are several methods of blood letting. Like draining out some blood from the near
by vein, making parallel cuts in the skin or applying a Tambadi (A cupping instrument).
Raktamoksha is not advisable in cases of tuberculosis, anemia, jaundice and in elder
patients. With the advancement of new technologies, Raktamoksha Karma is now
becoming out dated.
The 5 procedures of Panchkarma helps in completely cleansing of your body and
removing most of the ailments. This process is most effective when preceded by Poorva
Karma and followed by Paschat Karma.
Panchkarma is a very special Ayurvedic treatment requiring proper guidance from a
highly trained and skillful Ayurvedic practitioner. One should consult with an Ayurvedic
practitioner and not with some one with a modest amount of training prior deciding on
these cleansing procedures. Panchkarma is given individually to each person, according
to their specific constitution and disorders and needs. The treatment requires close
observations and supervisions.

Ayurveda and Colors
From time immemorial, colors have been credited with miraculous healing power. Sages
of ancient India discovered how the vibrations of each color could help to heal certain
ailments, and this knowledge was later codified in the Atharva Veda. Ancient Indians
scriptures as Surya Kiran Chikitsa (Healing with Sun rays), in the Egypt of your temples
have special healing rooms, where the sun disperse the 7 colors of rainbow.
Today this ancient healing technique is making a popular come back under the Quasi-
scientific label of chromo therapy.
The 7 colors of rainbow are associated with the, 7 Chakras of the body.
Mooldhara (root centre) is related to the red color and the Swadisthana Chakra (Cross
centre) is related to the orange color. As we travel to the upper part of Manipure (The
Naval centre), Anahata (Heart centre), Vishudhi (Thought centre), Agya Chakra (Third
eye centre) and finally to the Shasrara (the Crown centre). The color follows the
sequences of each Chakra and in turn is related to a specific gland. So a proper use of
color helps to heal the body ailments. For example, red is used to treat the lever disorders,
blue effects the pineal glands and green helps to treat pituitary problems.
Ayurveda also links certain colors with three dosha,s. Vatta (colic, associated with blue),
Pitta (bile, is associated with fiery red) and Kapha (felgum, associated with light and
luminous shades of yellow). Ayurveda also recognizes the close relation with the 5
elements of the body. Ether, fire, air, water and earth have the world of colors. Ether is
also associated with light blue, water with deep blue, air with green, fire with red and
earth with yellow.
The various actions to combat the diseases are as follows:
Red: Increases blood circulation, decreases lethargy and depression.
Orange: increases confidence and joy, decreases loneliness and fatigue.
Yellow: Increases memory and persuasive abilities and decreases desire to be critical.

Colour Therapy:-
From time immemorial, colours have been credited with miraculous healing power.
Sages of ancient India discovered how the vibrations of each colours could help to heal
certain ailments and this knowledge was later is codifies in the Atherva veda. In the
Egypt of yore the temples have special healing rooms where the sun disperse the seven
colours of rain bow. In the Indian scripture these are described as the Surya Kiran
Chikitsa ( Healing with Sun Rays).
Today these ancient healing technique is making a popular come back under the quasi
scientific label of Chromo therapy.
The seven colours of Rainbow are associated with the seven “Chakras” of the body.
The “Mool Dhara Chakra” (Root Center” is related kto the Red colour and the
Swadisthana Chakra (Cross center to the orange colour. As we travel to the upper part of
the Manipure (The naval center), Anahata (Heart center) ,Vishudhi (Throat center), Agya
( The third eye center)
Using color for therapy is one method in Ayurvedic medicine to create a balance of the
tridosha, the key to well-being.
