Brett Overton grew up playing baseball, first in Little League, then for Triton High School in Benson, North Carolina. He knew he was not ready to give up the sport so he began searching for a college where he could con-tinue his baseball career. He found Chowan University and four years later you’ll find him on spring afternoons at Hawkins Field playing third base.

Baseball brought Brett to Chowan, but the community he found here showed he had made the right choice. He was looking for a small campus with a busi-ness school where he could con-tinue to study business, an area that really interested him in his high school classes. Chowan pro-vided him with exactly that. He says the School of Business at Chowan is one of the things he likes most about Chowan. Be-cause the classes are so small, he has made many friends in the classroom and been in many

classes with those same friends throughout his time at Chowan. Brett claims “studying is easier when all your friends are in the same boat.”

Last semester, Brett completed an internship with Glover Con-struction, Inc., in Pleasant Hill, NC. He was able to see the con-cepts he learned in the classroom actually applied in a real world business environment.

He commented that “an intern-ship is a great opportunity that students should do if they are giv-en the chance.” Brett continues to work part-time this semester and hopes it will become a full-time job after graduation.

Brett’s family has had a tre-mendous impact on his life. When asked who his idols were he quickly answered his parents. He said his father “has perse-vered through many hard times” and his mother “is a very hard worker who is always up for chal-lenges.” Brett has definitely learned from his parents. He has handled the challenges of a very busy college life and will graduate in May with a BS in Business Ad-ministration with a concentration in Management and a minor in Accounting.

The School of Business con-gratulates Brett on his selection as the Student of the Month. We wish him success as he leaves Chowan in May and begins the career for which he has prepared.

Student of the Month for April 2012

Reginald Wiggins

Reginald Wiggins, Jr., “Reggie”, is a senior majoring in Business Admin-istration with a Concentration in Man-agement. After graduation in May, he plans to work as a business manager for L.E. Family Home Care.

Reggie is a local—his hometown is Murfreesboro. He graduated from Hertford County High School, where he played four years of varsity football and basketball, as well as running track. He received the Male Athlete of the Year Award for the Roanoke Chowan area while in high school.

Reggie left the east to play football at NC A&T State University. The fit wasn’t right, and he returned to Murfreesboro to attend Chowan Uni-versity because of the close-knit com-munity and cooperative and welcoming demeanor of the university’s faculty and staff. He especially appreciates the close relationships he has forged with other students and with faculty.

He emphasizes that the lines of communication are always open between students and faculty. The small class setting and one-on-one attention received from professors have contributed to his learning experiences. A Business Admin-istration major was perfect for Reggie, as he knew he wanted to learn the theory and art of business in school to help promote the suc-cess of his family’s business.

Reggie is an only child; his moth-er, Darlene Wiggins, owns W.E. Family Home Care, and his father, Reginald Wiggins, Sr., is a prison guard at the Odom Correctional Fa-cility. Reggie active in the Young Adult Ministry program at Parkers Grove Baptist Church. In his spare time, he enjoys writing and record-ing music.

Reggie states, “When striving to achieve goals, Faith in God and su-preme confidence in yourself is es-sential”

Congratulations, Reggie, on your selection as the School of Business Student of the Month for April!

They also participated in select competitive events, and all four placed in the top five in their respective events. Students Participate in Competitive Business Strategy Stimulation

The School of Business capstone course BUS 492 Strate-gy, taught by Dr. Griffin is partici-pating in a com-

petitive business strategy simulation entitled GLO-BUS©. Teams of stu-dents run a digital camera company in head-to-head competition against com-panies run by other class members, as well as teams at schools around the world. Company operations parallel those of actual digital camera compa-nies. Just as in the real-world, compa-nies compete in a global market arena, selling digital cameras in four geograph-ic regions—Europe-Africa, North America, Asia-Pacific, and Latin Ameri-ca.

Company co-managers must make decisions relating to R&D, component usage, camera performance, product line breadth, production operations, work force compensation, outsourcing, pricing, sales and marketing, finance, and corporate citizenship and social responsibility.

This simulation is designed to give students an active, hands-on managerial role in which they (1) think rationally and logically in deciding what to do and (2) get valuable practice in making a variety of different business decisions under circumstances that mirror real-world competitive conditions.

Each week, results are posted and the top 100 performances world-wide on Overall Score, EPS, ROE, and Stock Price are recognized.
