ALIPORE SOCIAL WELFARE TRUST Annual Report
Respected Elders, Brothers & Sisters,
2008-09 was an important year for Alipore Social Welfare Trust's evolution and
growth as it comprehensively tested our will to survive, succeed and flourish in the midst of
current socio- economic, cultural and political situation. The strength of a ship is not tested
by the miles navigated in calm water, but by it resilience to withstand the vagaries of the
turbulent seas that challenges its very existence. The DNA of an organisation is tested not
by its growth potential in good times but its strength to seamlessly sustain through its very
survival.
Milestones are an important part of journey. They reflect the distance travelled and
show the road ahead. Milestones are also occasions to pause and celebrate, regroup and
refuel for the journey ahead. In Alipore Social Welfare Trust, we look at milestones that
reflect value as seen by our elders, our colleagues, our well-wishers, our donors, our
beneficiaries, our patients and our volunteers.
We believe that our consistency is a result of our strategic insights, the conviction to
invest on those insights and the ability to rigorously execute and convert the insights to
reality. Achieving these landmarks, in a tough environment for the services provided by us
in Healthcare and Educational Reliefs and Scholarships was satisfying. Extending our
record of accomplishment set over past thirteen years as a Trust and eight years as a
Hospital was rewarding.
Being the most critical part of the process, incubation is a time for forward looking
decisions and introspective reflections. The choices made now will have far-reaching
repercussions in the days to come.
Our objective is to support the economically and socially marginalised communities
residing in various villages and towns around Alipore by Providing:
1. All the Developmental Needs of Alipore Hospital.
2. Round-the-Clock Alipore Hospital Ambulance services which serves Emergency
and Trauma Care Departments.
3. Health Awareness amongst the local communities.
4. Free Medical Camps of Various Medical Faculties.
5. Higher Education Awareness amongst these communities.
6. Under ASWT Educational Reliefs and Scholarships, we have encouraged Higher
Educations amongst the communities and hence have made a remarkable
achievement.
7. Launching Alipore Hospital Patient Welfare and Advisory Committee having
members from each villages and towns in the area who also provide with required
counselling, information and valuable advises.
8. By successfully making tie-up with Bigger Institutions for those Advanced Medical
Treatment and Procedures, which are not performed at Alipore Hospital at present.

Our Medical Team drive our Hospital. They Determine our success, performance

Respect for the Individual and Being Thoughtful and Responsible are the crux of our Talent
Engagement and Development Process.
We provide our Team of Doctors an opportunity to use their time and resources in
productive pursuits. We launched two programs 'Rejuve' and 'Enrich'. These Programs
allow our Team of Doctors and Staffs to use their time to expand their horizons,
professionally and personally thereby preparing them for a more rewarding future.
Firstly we, the trustees of Alipore Social Welfare Trust, express our sincere gratitude
to the Almighty and Most Merciful for selecting us for the service to Mankind. Alipore Social
Welfare Trust was established with a view to serve human beings with best possible way in
the remote village surrounded by around 80 villages where there are inadequate modern
facilities for the treatment of sick patients.
Secondly, we all at Alipore Social Welfare Trust, from the bottom of our hearts,
thank all of you who have been helpful and have given your time, money and effort for the
service of the sick and the poor. Without the donors, Alipore Hospital would not have been
as it is of today.
Alipore Social Welfare Trust has various activities. Here we take opportunity inform
to you regarding our activities, hence we start with Alipore Hospital.
Alipore Hospital had built a reputation for fairness and meritocracy. In an effort to
further encouragement diversity amongst our workforce, the end result of
innumerable insights, calculated decisions and assiduous goal-oriented thinking is
transformation. This transformational excellence puts us at a position of strength in
our medical services.
At Alipore Hospital, we incubate new practices for serving the patients by creating
competencies in emerging technologies. To enhance focus, select technologies are
identified, like introducing or Upgrading Modern and Technologically Advanced
Machineries and Equipments in each Departments - Spiral CT Scan,
Ultrasonography (USG), Hi-Frequency Radiology, Multi-Para Cardiac Monitors, 2D
Echo-Cardiography, Computerised Stress Test, Modern Haemodialysis, and many
other services in various departments.
ASWT's participation in building a healthy community manifests itself through

(1) ALL TREATMENTS UNDER ONE ROOF
2
ALIPORE SOCIAL WELFARE TRUST Annual Reportinitiatives in several areas of healthcare. Alipore Hospital has been serving the sick
for the past 8 years, irrespective of any bar of caste, creed, colour or religion. Since
inception, that is, 4th June, 2001, we, at Alipore Hospital, have rendered services in
General Surgery and Emergency (Casualty) Departments and then we gradually
started introducing various departments one after another in the next three years,
like Cardiology and General Medicine, Orthopaedic, Radiology and Sonology, ICCU
& Surgical ICU, Pathology, Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT), Psychology, Dermatology,
Urology, Gynaecology, Neuro-Surgery Consulting, Paediatric, Imaging,
Anaesthesia, Laparoscopy and Arthroscopy, Heamo-Dialysis Department and a
Medical Store, so as to enable all the services under one roof.
To serve and provide better and adequate healthcare to the sick and needy
patients, treating them with the best available medical facilities at Alipore Hospital
by our Team of Medical Consultants in Various Departments under One Roof, is our
first priority. This we achieved by personally contacting medical consultants from
nearby cities and towns, requesting and encouraging them to visit Alipore Hospital
and by offering them excellent facilities and infrastructure for operations and other
medical investigations in our premises. Technology and adopting frequent updated
equipment just adds to the better services we could provide.
We would like to remind you, that we did mentioned in our earlier report, on the 1st
anniversary of Alipore Hospital, the services rendered in various departments and
the operations performed here were never imagined or heard previously in this part
of the country where a patient has no other option and have to suffer severely.
Since January 2002, we introduced Free OPD Dispensary Service, check-up /
consulting by our Medical Officers and Housemen where One-Day Medicine is
given at a token rate of Rs. 5/- per day. This was only possible because of
Almighty's blessings and mercy on us and also because of prayers and good
wishes of all the elders, youngsters and benefactors.
We are pleased to inform you that since the Hospital services were started 8 years
ago the following Relief were given in various departments at Alipore Hospital :

Every month, after giving reliefs in various departments which is around

ALIPORE SOCIAL WELFARE TRUST Annual ReportRight now at Alipore Hospital, we have now have a good team of Consultant
Doctors who are available round-the-clock like a Full-Time General Physician &
Cardiologist Dr. Jayesh Patel, General and Laparoscopic Surgeon Dr. Nirav Desai,
Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Tarun Desai, Full- Time General Paediatr ic ian Dr.
Dharmesh Patel, Full-Time Pathologist Dr. Amita Patel and a Full Time
Anaesthetist and Intensivist Dr Meghal Patel, in addition we also have a daily full-
fledged Dental Surgery department. We also have a team of qualified Housemen to
look after our patients round-the-clock. We also have Dr. Dharmista Patel, Physio-
Therapist serving daily at our Physio-Therapy Department. During the year, we felt
that there was a need of an Administrator, and hence we also appointed Dr.
Roopam Gupta, as a Chief Medical Officer-cum-Administrator.
Doctors form the Backbone in the Medical Field. Alipore Hospital and Research
Centre (AHRC) takes pride in the quality of its talent. It celebrates its human capital
and acknowledges each individual's contribution. We, at Alipore Hospital, nurture
our Doctors and Employees at Each Hierarchy through numerous training and
development programmes to help them actualise their potential. The overarching
objective is to ensure for each individual, a wholesome and challenging Job Profile,
thereby constantly aligning individual aspirations to organisational needs.
During the year we had to bear with bidding farewell to four of our full time
consultant doctors, namely first Dr. Pradip Patel MD (Medicine) and Dr. Jyoti Patel
MD (Obs. & Gynae.), both of them had served Alipore Hospital for more than Five
Years and Dr. Amit Dev MS(Ortho.) and Dr. Vandana Dev MD(Anaes) both served
AHRC for more than Three Years. To seek replacement of well-set organisation with
specialist consultant doctors was a tough task. We believe that
We constantly remind ourselves that our collective
endeavour as an organisation is to build Facilities and Services to serve better for
the long haul. We are pleased to admit that we did have some hiccups in finding the
right choice but with Eight Years in serving the population with Healthcare needs,
Alipore Hospital has achieved a goodwill for which we did receive many new
applications for these vacancies. To make a right choice was a big hurdle too.
Across the organisational spectrum, the adaptation of talent, strategy and goals to
an ever-changing paradigm is the need of the hour. Adaptation is a process that
undoubtedly ensures future growth, stability and success. 2008-09 witnessed
change and uncertainty. It was necessary to adapt to uncertain times without losing
focus of the future. Our initiatives with regards to Innovation and Talent
Management, in particular address this need, They are the foundation for a strong
differentiated Alipore Social Welfare Trust of the future.
Agility is about high performing organisations. Every agile organisation raises its
performance bar to help improve efficiencies with speed and effectiveness.
Performance at each hierarchy is closely aligned to organisational performance.
This requires each member of the organisation to contribute more aggressively and
(5) TALENT MANAGEMENT
'Tough times Don't
Last, Tough People Do'.
5
ALIPORE SOCIAL WELFARE TRUST Annual Reportenhance performance levels on a continuous basis. Additionally, there is enhanced
focus on cross training for experienced professionals in the organisation to ensure
continuous improvement in utilisation. Nurturing human capital and developing
talents requires agility and real-time management as well as a constant focus on
improvement.
We have believed in building talent and leadership in the organisation and
empowering the team to achieve organisational goals. We have placed strong
emphasis on a framework of ethics and good governance that balances the
interests of our elders, donors, committee members, doctors, staffs, patients and all
our beneficiaries.
We have sought to be adaptable and flexible, anticipating and responding to the
changing needs of the economy, the dynamic Medical, Educational and
Technological Environment and the expectations of our elders, donors, committee
members, doctors, staffs, patients and all our beneficiaries. We have believed in
innovation to enhance the range of facilities and services that offer and provide
greater convenience to our patients and beneficiaries.
We also should identify and address our limitations and in the meantime also try to
counsel and help our patients and beneficiaries to get a better treatment in a better
facility and above all in affordable rates. Healthcare is a sector where proper care
should be taken of the patients irrespective of the background of patients' origin.
Hence, we have made some tie-up with some institutions in Surat and Navsari. Our
Partners in Healthcare are :
, Surat
, Navsari For Advanced Ophthalmic (Eye) Care and
Camps.
, Mumbai For Pathological Laboratory
Services.

(C) ASWT HEALTH AWARENESS PROGRAMME AND MEDICAL CAMPS
(D) ALIPORE HOSPITAL MEDICAL STORE- AHMS (PHARMACY)
(E) ALIPORE HOSPITAL AMBULANCE SERVICE
Propagating and Educating Healthcare and bringing Health Awareness was a
challenge to us, as most of the public around here are either illiterate or less
educated. To achieve our goal in creating a good health awareness we started a
programme of Free Mobile Dispensary Services (FMDS) in which we dispatch a
Team of Medical Experts to various villages in the remote areas and treat the
inhabitants right on their doorsteps. For sometime, FDMS campaign was
discontinued for organising ourselves and we shall restart this programme soon
with even better facilities.
Our aim is to serve the community with modern medical facilities at a very low
expenditure and to create Health and Medical Awareness amongst the local
populations. Our priority is Preventive Care and therefore we educate the local
population regarding the need of Proper Hygiene, Prevention of diseases, and
recognition of warning symptoms so that early diagnosis and treatment is possible.
Patients care is our first priority and we will try our best to take care of them. For
which we humbly request co-operation from you. Your suggestions, comments and
advice are most welcome and may prove beneficial to us in serving the sick in the
best possible way.
Health Awareness Programme is a continuous project and we have always tried our
best in promoting this programme and in future shall promote with better plan and
facilities. We have also acquired LCD Projector for this purpose. We have organised
Free Medical Camps for various Specialised Medical Treatment frequently. We also
plan to organise at least one free medical camp each month to create health
awareness and also to serve the underprivileged part of the population from the
remote villages. If we can get your continued support, good wishes, prayers and
generous contributions towards these noble causes, then our aim will be achieved.
Alipore Hospital Medical Store (AHMS) is now housed in a new State-of-Art
Computerised Pharmacy Store Premises in the Hospital Campus which has
enabled to serve better. AHMS is serving 24/7 (day and night) service to the patients
and local population. Our round-the-clock service and easy availability of life-saving
medicines has been a boon to the population around Alipore.
Since inception of Alipore Hospital, that is 4th June 2001, we had started 24Hrs
Ambulance Service with a small Ambulance Vehicle. In the year 2004-05, the
Generous Donors from the United Kingdom donated a state-of-art, full-fledged
ICCU and Trauma Care Ambulance Vehicle which is equipped with all Life Savings

required frequent maintenances. We are indebted with our donors' generous
gestures and extend our deep gratitude to all our donors of the United Kingdom
who came forward and contributed generously towards this Project.
Work for the Third floor and at the campus is under progress. There was an acute

Electricity wiring and fixtures are on pipeline.
The Canteen, Pharmacy, Prayer Hall, Board Room,
Morgue Room up to CT Scan Centre facility are completed and also
functional. The other three residential quarters are nearing to completion.
The Conference Room is also nearing completion and Public Toilets are
almost ready.
Overall the Expansion work is in full swing and most of the expansion work
is expected to be completed by October 2009. After the work at Third Floor

We would like to remind you that in our previous Annual Report we had
mentioned to start an English School, which was under process and in the
planning stage. During the year, we have came to know that Alipore Muslim
Association, Alipore, had planned, applied and successfully registered in
the Gujarat Government's Education Department to start an English Medium
School at Alipore. Hence to start an English Medium Institute in the same
locality when the existing educational school organisation had already gone
forward would be an unwise step and can spread negative vibes in the
community. However our project of starting a nursing and Para-medical
institute has already started. Here we take the opportunity to inform you that
we have scrapped the project to start an English Medium School. Now the
Status for the Proposed English Medium School plan by ASWT is :
At Alipore Hospital, majority of patients are from poor and under-privileged families.
Alipore Hospital Patient Relief Fund was introduced to help the patients for hospital
and medicine bills. We are proud to state that this fund has been very useful for
these poor and needy patients. Alipore Hospital Patient Relief Fund gives medical
reliefs to all the poor people without any bar of caste, creed, colour or religion. Here
we thank all our Sadaqah Fund Coin-Box Donors to make this fund possible.

Within past one decade, Gujarat State has experienced worst of disasters like
earthquakes, cyclone, plague, dengue outbreak, torrential rainfall leading to
massive floods epidemic spread out and communal riots. To keep our selves ready
for relief works Alipore Social Welfare Trust have launched a fund which is called
ASWT Alipore Hospital Disaster Relief Fund”. During the recent flood in Surat,
ASWT Alipore Hospital Disaster Relief Fund had done commendable relief works.
We all thank Almighty and Most Merciful that during the year we had not
experienced any natural disaster. To keep ourselves ready for any unforeseen
natural disaster we do require keeping ourselves ready. Hence we require to
maintain and secure this fund in handy. We, at, Alipore Social Welfare Trust, feel out
duty towards the disaster-stricken in India. During the past one year, our colleagues
have reached for relief work with the local NGOs to other states wherever we felt the
people were in need in India like Bihar Flood Disaster Relief 2008, Cyclone Aila -
stricken Sunderbans, West Bengal 2009 and Naxalites-infested Jharkhand.
Social responsibility is born in personal conviction, a matter of individual choice.
From taking initiatives in building the next
generation of productive citizens, to organizing various health and educational
camps, visiting other healthcares, institutions, etc we and our volunteers have
always believed in truly making a difference to the world in which we live. Our
volunteers worked round-the-clock during the recent Surat Flood Disaster and
outburst of epidemic. At ASWT, a climate conducive to the spirit of volunteering
enables these activities to be virtually self-driven while remaining consistent and
structured. To serve the population even better, we have now formed a committee
which shall be known as Alipore Hospital Patient Welfare and Advisory Committee,
the detailed report shall be in the coming pages.
Our congratulations to Government of Gujarat for the

order to impart the education, and Alipore Hospital is now a centre for
“Nursing Assistant” course of GKS, and we Train the Nursing student at
our hospital Facility, with the able teaching expertise of our qualified nurses
and Doctors and it is done totally Free Of Cost! It is a Social Service

ALIPORE SOCIAL WELFARE TRUST Annual ReportOUR PARTNERS IN HEALTHCARE (TIE - UP)
Alipore Hospital is on the developmental phase. We strive to provide Complete Health Care
to all our patients and have successfully gained a reputation of discharging the patient home-
'Healthy & Happy' after he visits Alipore Hospital. Many-a-times a Sick person's condition is very
critical, and requires Advanced Life-Saving Care. It is a very helpless moment for the treating Doctor
and the Hospital Management, but a patient has to be temporarily shifted to another Health Care
Facility for any advanced Diagnostic or Therapeutic Purpose because that particular procedure or
expertise could not be provided at Alipore Hospital at that point of time and Saving Life is always our
Top Priority. The relatives and attendant of the sick person are mostly from Non-Medical background
and poor, hence they may feel stressed and let down.
Alipore Hospital has successfully circumvented this problem by opting to follow the 'NHS
Model'
The at Alipore Hospital is provided by 'General OPD services' and
'Screening' by MBBS (Family Physician) Medical Officers, 'Trauma First Aid' care by a team of
Medical Officer and Paramedics lead by a 'Critical Care Expert'.
is provided by our Full Time Specialist Consultants (MD/MS) through
OPD, Indoor Facility, and Diagnostic Services Through our Advanced Pathology Lab and other
Equipments.
was a challenge! It requires Super-Specialists Cardiologists, Cardiovascular
Surgeons, Neuro-Surgeons, Neuro-Physicians, Plastic Surgeons, Urologists and Nephrologists etc.
Tertiary Care requires very expensive facilities like 'Cath-Lab' for Cardiac Angiography, MRI
Machines, Advanced Cardiac Operation Theatres etc. in addition with Proper Infrastructure and
other facilities.
At Alipore Hospital have dealt with the Primary and Secondary Care and have to some
extent also dealt with Tertiary Care too, with these departments with a remarkable success to
facilitate our patients with one roof at Alipore Hospital. But at the same time we have to identify our
limitation and for the sake of Patients prompt medical care we have to get a backup from a highly
advanced healthcare centres which are well-equipped and are affordable to all.
We met this challenge successfully by our strategy of 'Tie Ups'. We ensure that the
Treatment of our patients is completed during the visit of all Super-Specialists Consultant Doctors
and Surgeons(MCh, DM)on prescheduled days regularly at Alipore Hospital. These Super-Specialist
Doctors also perform Operative procedures like Neuro-Surgical Burr Holing, Organ-Harvesting for
Transplantation at Alipore Hospital and even screen patients by serving in Medical Camps we
regularly organise. For the Tertiary Care procedures such as Coronary Angiography, Cardiac
Surgery, Advanced Neuro Surgery etc we have agreements with such Super-Speciality Institutions
located in Surat or Navsari. The Operative or Diagnostic procedures are carried out at a very
Subsidized Rate with Personalised Care, and are actively monitored by the referring Consultant
Doctors and Alipore Hospital Management.
We believe that the strategy that we have followed and the franchise that we have built
provide a strong foundation for our growth and above all shall be helpful to our patients and
beneficiaries in the years to come.

INTRODUCTION -
NEED OF HIGHER EDUCATION -
DEMAND FOR CAREER BASED EDUCATION -
EMPHASIS ON SCIENCE FACULTY -
During our delegation meeting with Muslim Aid London in 2005, Education
Status amongst Muslims of South Gujarat was discussed. It was found that due to financial reasons,
students were deprived from Higher Education. The meeting concluded with all the Members of
Muslim Aid UK, assuring us that if we launch a higher education Scholarship Programme,
Muslim Aid UK regularly support for scholarship project, which we gladly accepted.
The western-orientated and dominated society in which we live,
demand that we inculcate in our children a type of knowledge with an Islamic ethos to ensure that
we are not swept with the tide. We must ensure that our children acquire fundamental knowledge,
which they require in order to fulfill their natural functions as human beings. Similarly, professional
knowledge is a pre-requisite in order to earn a living. Sadly, many of our children do not have this
opportunity due to lack of funds. With this in mind, a Fund was launched which is called, “ASWT
Education Relief and Scholarship Fund”.
Surveys prove that we have most of students
opting for Arts and Commerce Faculty instead of Science Faculty, which is more Career-based and
lucrative, in today's world. The demand for Medical, Dental, Bio-Chem, Engineering and Information
Technology Faculties are increasing. We encourage bright and eligible students for these faculties.
By educating the children in Arts and Commerce Faculty,
what we create is just an army of unemployed youths, in the society. Hence, we, at Alipore Social
Welfare Trust had decided to give scholarships to those needy students who deserves and are
eligible to be Doctors or for Para-Medical Studies and for that we have started talent search in and
around Alipore.

A few Children are born unfortunately with a Developmental Defect of Cleft Lip and Cleft
Palate; they suffer innumerable problems of Speech, Feeding and most importantly Inferiority
complex due to their Abnormal Looks and being Shun by peer groups. Children with Cleft Lip
and Palate should be treated by a multidisciplinary specialist "Cleft Team" that include
surgeons, speech and language therapists, audiologists (hearing experts), dentists,
orthodontists, psychologists, geneticists and specialist cleft nurses. Poor patients cannot afford
this expensive Operation. Alipore Hospital in collaboration with a charitable trust “Maaya
Foundation” which is dedicated to treat the poor and needy suffering from deformity like cleft lip
& Palate organized a "Totally Free", Operation Camp for this less fortunate section of the
society, who normally do not have access to and can not afford such treatments. In addition,
free food and bed, and even transportation from their place to the hospital and back for the
