In the newsstands, there are numerous lifestyle and specialist titles – all competing for readers. It is a somewhat saturated market, where only an original concept could make an impact on the judges.

Tucked – winner of this year’s Best Original Concept award – aimed at the LGBTQ demographic fits the bill.

It is a concept that emerged from a course assignment by magazine journalism students. Team Tucked’s Alice Freeman, Iga Kozakiewicz-Schlegel, Josie Tague and Aiden Dalby – who have just begun their final year at Southampton Solent University – were delighted by their success...

W H AT ’ S Y O U R S P E C I A L I S T A R E A ? Magazines. Within those, I create words and imagery.

W H AT Q U A L I F I C AT I O N S D O Y O U H AV E ? 14 GCSE’s, a BTEC National Diploma in Creative Media Production (Journalism), an A-Level in Photography and I am currently working towards my BA (Hons) Magazine Journalism degree.

W H AT H A S B E E N Y O U R B E S T U N I V E R S I T Y E X P E R I E N C E ? Although creating Soton magazine was an invaluable experience, I am most proud of creating Tucked magazine. As a group, we produced an original, exciting and visually satisfying magazine which ended up winning us an award.

W H AT H A S B E E N Y O U R M O S T M E M O R A B L E F R E E L A N C E W O R K ? The first published piece in fashion and arts magazine Old Tat. I wrote a feature for its launch issue, and have appeared in every issue of the printed publication since. I also write for the blog. Recently, the Editor promoted me to Features Writer.

H AV E Y O U G O T A N Y O T H E R B Y L I N E S ? Yes. In Primary Times magazine,

I Honestly Think magazine and The Daily Touch online. As well as a design and assistant byline for Ligature magazine.

H O W W O U L D O T H E R P E O P L E D E S C R I B E Y O U ? Someone once called me ‘unconventionally creative’. I like that, it suits me.

W H AT A R E Y O U R I N T E R E S T S ?I have a penchant for the macabre and the unusual. I currently collect taxidermy, disregarded dolls and religious kitsch ephemera. This has also led me to an interest in unusual subcultures, such as the drag scene. Mid-century fashion and decor, from ‘50s americana to ‘60s mod, is also a great interest of mine. The more kitsch, the better.

H O W D O Y O U S P E N D Y O U R F R E E T I M E ? If I’m not rummaging through a charity shop or antique store, I’ll be at an art or photography exhibition in London. I enjoy vintage fairs and attending VW classic car meets with my family.

W H E R E D O Y O U S E E Y O U R S E L F I N F I V E Y E A R S ? Either working as a Creative Director on an independent magazine, or publishing my own.

22 SKILLS ALICE HAS GOT THAT YOU NEED

6 ALICE FREEMAN

1 F E AT U R E W R I T I N G

Print and online. From thoughtful debates to profile pieces, I am able to pitch, research and write to suit the target audience. Seeking original angles and interviewees are of my highest priority.

2 P H O TO G R A P H Y

Mostly shooting portraiture and fashion, I have experience shooting with advanced technical lighting in the studio and on location.

3 A R T D I R E C T I O N

Even when the shoots are not my own, I have confidently planned and envisioned innovative editorial shoots and designs. A penchant for the unusual makes my visual work unique.

4 L AY O U T D E S I G N

Taking inspiration from an influx of independent magazines, I prefer a stripped-back approach to bring text and image together.

5 S U B - E D I T I N G

There’s nothing more frustrating than spotting a ‘typo’ in a magazine.

6 S O C I A L M E D I A

Harnessing social media as a modern-day marketing technique is key. With a confident understanding of the popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, I have examined and deployed techniques successful in getting attention online.

This original investigates David Bowie’s iconic lyrical technique. Taking direct inspiration from this, the design also hails back to the style of David Carson in Raygun magazine.

freelance testimonials

18 ALICE FREEMAN

IN BRIEF

“The Beatnik Emporium enlisted the help of Alice and Iga at the beginning of October 2015 as we were having problems with using social media effectively. We met with them and discussed our needs and expectations; we felt they were very perceptive and understood what was required to solve our issues. The energy and enthusiasm with which they tackled the situation was admirable, any posts they did on our behalf had far more response than our own previous posts. They are an approachable and reliable team and we are very happy with their work.” — Samantha Maton, Co-Owner of Beatnik Emporium Southampton

BEATNIK EMPORIUMFreelance Social Media Assistant

“Alice has been working with us for the past 18 months. At first she was a full time intern helping with mood boards, layout designs, admin and shoots. Since going back to Uni Alice has continued to assist the magazine – handling our Instagram account where she curates the images in order to keep our image consistent.” —Sarah Michelle, Editor of Ligature magazine and Stylist

“Alice never breaks a promise or lets me down. She is my right-hand girl! She is patient, reliable, honest, creative, helpful and I find it hard to sing her praises loud enough. She always gives her own take on briefs and takes all of her tasks seriously. I can easily bounce my ideas off Alice and know that she will give a unique outlook.” — Loo Loo Rose, Editor-In-Chief of Old Tat magazine
