A.L.I. Mission Statement

_________________________________________________

The Academy for Learning Islam (A.L.I.) is a registered charity

(BN 88712 9815 RR00001) committed to teaching and explaining

the religious tenets, history and practices of Islam according to

the Shī‘ah Ithnā ‘Asharī school of thought.

Religious education is an important goal of the Muslim

community. Weekend Madrasahs (religious institutions) and

Majālis (gatherings during religious occasions) have played an

important role in this task, but a different approach is required

for more serious learning through the adult years. Youths and

adults need to refresh their Islamic knowledge and inspire

themselves on a regular basis. A.L.I. aims to fulfill this niche

through learning that is more structured and serious than that

derived through monologue lecturing, but which does not require

a long term commitment of time - a short commodity in today’s

modern times.

To do this, A.L.I. offers different educational and religious

activities every academic year. The activities are conducted in

three semesters: Fall, winter and spring. Some programs are

offered thoughout the year.

Disclaimer: The Academy for Learning Islam (A.L.I.) carries out appropriate due diligence on personnel it engages to run its

programs and sets a general framework for the content of its seminars and courses. However, ALI is not responsible for the

veracity of any information or material presented by any instructor, teacher or volunteer as part of their role in teaching,

lecturing, informing or counselling course participants. The

presenters are solely responsible for what they teach.

ALI Fees and Honorarium Policy

____________________________________________________________________

The Academy for Learning Islam (A.L.I.) provides educational

services for the benefit of all Muslims, especially those following

the teachings of Holy Prophet Muhammad (s) and his Household – the Ahlul Bayt (a). ALI’s support comes from its

regular donors, one-time donations and voluntary services provided by its dedicated team. Other sources include fees for

courses and sale of publications and other literature. Huquq funds

(khums, nadhar, Tablīgh, etc.) are used only as a last resort to

cover any shortfall.

Here below is our Policy regarding Fees, Donations and Honorarium offered to Instructors by the Academy for its

Educational services:

1) All our Instructors are offered honorarium for conducting courses, spiritual retreats, seminars and webinars. This helps in maintaining good standard of teaching and a sense of responsibility. Those Instructors who wish to offer gratis services can donate the amount back to the Academy. 2) The honorarium to Instructors is based on actual teaching time in classrooms. The rate paid is similar to what is offered by local colleges in the province of Ontario, Canada, where the Academy is based. Instructors may contact the Administrative Director ([email protected]) for more details.

3) All online courses and webinars are offered gratis. Participants are encouraged to donate whatever they can to support ALI to meet its mission.

4) Canadian residents can contribute/donate using Donate Now Button on our site. Non Canadian residents can donate using PayPal button on ALI site.

5) All onsite religious courses are subsidized. The set course fee is intended to defray rental and photocopy charges. Those who cannot afford to pay the set fees are encouraged to donate any amount they consider reasonable based on their individual circumstances. 6) All non-religious courses (e.g. language, healthy living, art, social interaction, etc.) require a set fee to recover rental, photo-copy and instruction costs. Those who cannot afford to pay the set fees are encouraged to donate any amount they consider reasonable based on their individual circumstances.

7) For the Academic year 2015-16, ALI suggests the following reasonable donation per person for religious/non-religious courses: Donation of$30 for religious courses and $50 fees for non-religious courses. There may be exceptions to certain courses.

Sahīfa Sajjādiyya Project

___________________________________________________________________

A.L.I. is planning for the following and welcomes volunteers to assist in this.

1. Arrange the Arabic text along with side by side translations in English by Ali Ahmad Muhani and William C. Chittick. 2. Replace archaic words thou, thee, thy, doest, etc. with words used in regular, un-academic, English language. 3. Replace the words ‘God’ or ‘Lord’ with ‘Allah’ in translatio if the original text has ‘Allah’ in it. 4. Insert Quranic references in the brackets (e.g. Q 2:202) at the end of the verse quoted within the Du’ās, and not as footnote or endnote. 5. Contact scholars and speakers, requesting them to share their notes or write-ups they may have from their lectures on Du’ās from the Sahīfa. 6. Gather all audio and video recitations of the text for posting these on one site, where possible or at least provide all links to the recitations. 7. Gather all audio and video lectures in English on the Sahīfa or its contents for linking them to our site. 8. Gather abstracts on the Sahīfa from the book Muslim Devotions by Constance E. Padwick.

Page 8: ALI Calendar for the - tayyiba.org · 1 In His Name, the Beneficent, the Merciful ALI Calendar for the Academic Year 2015 - 2016 Academy for Learning Islam (Updated Rabī II 1437/February

8

9. Prepare a comprehensive list of all sharh/tafāsīr of the Sahīfa in Arabic, Farsi, Urdu and other languages. 10. Get images of select pages from oldest available manuscripts and/or prints of the Sahīfa. 11. Besides the two known translations mentioned above, gather other available English translations of some of the supplications and passages from the Sahīfa. 12. Encourage seminary and university students to write research papers on the significance, historicity and contents of the Sahīfa. 13. Prepare audio files of the supplication translations in English. Gujarati, Kiswahili and Urdu.

We need volunteers for the above noble work. Please let us know

if you are willing to help in any way with the Sahīfa project.

Fall 2015 – On site Courses ____________________________________________________________________

ALI 317: What should be our focus when raising children? The eloquent supplications by Imam Ali Zaynul ‘Ābidīn (a) in

the Sahīfa Sajjādiyya contain great wisdom and guidance for daily

life. Understanding and applying them can provide immense benefits. In this course we will study Imam’s supplication for his

children (No. 25). We will discuss the focus of Muslim parents

when raising their children, and their expectations from young and adult children. All Muslim parents and grandparents are

encouraged to register for the course.

Instructor: Sh. Hasanayn Kassamali Schedule: Four Tuesdays, Sep 8, 15, 29; Oct 6, 2015; 8:30 – 9:30 pm Venue: Seminar Room D, JCC 9000 Bathurst St., Thornhill, ON

Suggested Donations: $30, paid by cheque in favour of A.L.I. or online thru CanadaHelps.org

ALI 328: Anger Management Anger is a normal response to pain, threat, and injustice. Many are often frightened of the intense feeling of anger and may try

to push it away. We may believe that expressing anger is not appropriate so we may try to use our willpower to be in control

of our emotions and not to express anger. Often these strategies

do not work and may cause anger to ‘leak out’ in unhealthy ways.

In this course, we will learn to distinguish between healthy

assertiveness and toxic anger. We will also cover how to recognize our own anger style and practice effective ways of

dealing with situations that trigger us. Instructor: Sr. Marzia Hassan
