THE PROOF IS IN THE POTASHThe Eltopia, Washington replicated trial

investigated potassium source impact on

both new and established stands of alfalfa.

In both variations, Protassium+ delivered

higher yields over MOP (muriate of potash).

In new alfalfa stands,

Protassium+ delivered:

• A 600 lb per acre yield advantage vs. MOP

• A 400 lb per acre yield advantage vs.

MOP + Sulfur

• Better stand establishment and

first cutting

A 2012 series of field trials were conducted in Eltopia, Washington to determine which of the two most commonly used

potassium sources had the greatest impact on alfalfa.

In established alfalfa stands, Protassium+

demonstrated more than a one ton per

acre yield over MOP.

METHODOLOGYBoth new and established stand alfalfa

field trials were replicated four times and

involved four treatment variations:

• 200 lb. of K2O as Protassium+ (sulfate of

potash) per acre

• 200 lb. of K2O as MOP (muriate of potash)

per acre

• 200 lb. of K2O as MOP+ sulfur (equal to

the amount in Protassium+) per acre

• 0 lb. of K2O (control)

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONSIn both variations, alfalfa plants treated

with Protassium+ experienced significant

increase in yield per acre.

From the results, it can be concluded

that the high chloride found in MOP

contributed to lower yields. Salt, like that

found in high levels in MOP, contributes to:

• Poor germination

• Nutritional imbalances

• Seedling injury

• “Tip burn”

• Stunted root and shoot growth

Protassium+ is virtually chloride free and

has the lowest salt index per unit of K2O

among all major sources of potassium.

Plus, it contains 17 percent sulfate sulfur,

which helps support a variety of plant

functions.

The results of the field trial clearly

show that choosing Protassium+ as a

potassium source contributes to greater

yield, higher forage quality and more

revenue for growers.
