My native city, Saint-Petersburg, is famous not only for its history and culture, but also for its sports achievements. Saint-Petersburg is the city of football club FC Zenit. Except for football, Petersburg is the home city of many famous sportsmen.

Very well known in Russia are Nikolai Valuev (world champion in boxing), Evgeni Plushenko (Olympic gold medal winner in figure skating), Svetlana Zhurova (Olympic and world champion in speed skating), Alexander Khalifman (chess world champion), Dmitri Shepel (European champion in speed skating), Alexei Mishin (world medalist and famous figure skating coach), and many others. One of Mishin’s famous pupils is Alexei Urmanov - Olympic gold medal winner in figure skating.

Alexei Urmanov, born November 17, 1973 in Leningrad, is a famous Russian figure skater, who currently works as a coach. He started skating at the age of four and trained at the Yubileini

Sports Palace in Saint-Petersburg. His coaches were Nina Monakhova, Natalya Golubeva and Alexei Mishin (since 1989). At the 1990 World Junior Figure Skating Championships Alexei

won the silver medal and at the 1990 Soviet Figure Skating Championships in Minsk he won the bronze medal and became

the first skater who performed a quadruple jump.

In 1991 Alexei Urmanov became the first skater who performed quadruple jumps at the European and World Figure Skating

Championships. At the 1992 Winter Olympics Alexei was the 5th, then in 1993 he

won the bronze medal at the 1993 World Figure Skating Championships and successfully

participated in all national and international competitions.

As the result of his and Mishin’s work Alexei Urmanov became the first Russian gold medalist in men's singles at the 1994 Winter

Olympics in Lillehammer. After his great success Alexei became the 1997 European champion, but an injury after the short

program at the 1997 World Championships didn’t give Alexei a chance to take part in the 1998 Olympics. In 1999 he turned pro

and won the World Professional Championships of 1999. He presented one of his famous programs “Fantom of the Opera”,

and as always his performance was excellent.

Alexei Urmanov is currently a skating coach and an International Skating Union technical specialist. He formerly coached Sergei

Voronov, Nodari Maisuradze, Zhan Bush, and Gordei Gorshkov. His current pupils are Nikol Gosviani and Polina Agafonova.

Alexei Urmanov is an Honored Masters of Sports of the RussianFederation and is awarded the Order for Personal Courage. In 2004 he got married to Viktoria Urmanova and they are the

parents of twins: Ivan and Andrei.

Alexei lives and works in Saint-Petersburg and is devoted to his native city and his family, to figure skating and his pupils.
