Profiling: Take a Look at Yourself YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS: As a member of AAUW, you have access to the AAUW Member Service Database (MSD). You can use the MSD to update your member record and contact information, make a contribution, and track your membership and giving history for tax purposes. Additionally, branch members can view their branch member roster and leader contacts on the MSD. Your personal record on the MSD is called your Profile. It is extremely important that your Profile information be accurate. WHY? National and AAUW of Virginia use mailing and emailing addresses to send AAUW Outlook, Virginia Vision, voting ballots, and other information to you.

HOW TO ACCESS THE MSD AND CHECK YOUR INFORMATION If you do not have a computer, call 800/326-2289 and ask to speak to someone in Membership, and ask about your Profile. If you have online access, visit www.aauw.org and click at the very top to login with your AAUW Member ID. If you don’t have that number, it takes seconds to obtain it by clicking on Forgot AAUW Member ID? Another way to obtain your ID is to call 800/326-AAUW (2289) and ask for it. Your ID is also on your copy of AAUW Outlook. If this is the first time you have logged in, you will Need to Register. Click on that and follow the directions to create a personal password. Now you are ready to Enter Member Service Database. Then, click on My Profile in the top left column. Is your information correct? If not, make changes as directed. You can also print out a membership card to keep your Member ID handy. MEMBER TOOLS When you scroll down to the bottom of the homepage at www.aauw.org, there is another location to login. There also you will see Member Tools. This is a password protected section for AAUW members. When you click, you must login with your ID and the password you just created, or create a password at this point. Within Member Tools at the very top, click on Resources and you will find a multitude of helpful resources for branch leaders and members. Everyone should know about the huge number of items available to members! At the bottom, click to go directly to your Profile. But, most importantly, check right now to see if your MSD information is correct! Make sure your Profile is correct so that you receive everything from AAUW and AAUW of Virginia that is sent to you. (If you do not want to receive anything from AAUW you may call the number above and ask to have your info flagged.) Patsy Quick AAUW of Virginia Vice President for Communications [email protected]

Presidents’ Letter This year 2013-2014 we have chosen as our theme and objective "Strength in Diversity" and our thrust is to make a difference in the Alexandria community. We aim to do this with your help, not only with projects like Christ House on October 30 that feed and serve the less privileged, but also with other new projects to assist young women to become leaders. As this project develops you will be hearing more about this. When we started the year as Co-Presidents, neither Ginger nor I had held any office with AAUW and we didn't know what to expect. Both of us had greatly enjoyed being members of the book club. Now with two events completed in September, I feel we can say that AAUW is in full swing! So far for September we had two successful and interesting events that each drew a score of members; already six new members have joined our branch. First, we had the "Meet and Greet" at my home where we learned about the fascinating history and archival projects from our State Chair, Caroline Pickens. We were also regaled by a song from "Les Miserables" and enjoyed a video presentation by Ruth Bennett about "On the Go with AAUW" with clips from a few of the 252 programs produced so far - all this while we enjoyed good food and good company. Our second program was an elucidating presentation by our speaker Greg Carpenter, who discussed the lack of privacy on our computers, phones, and banking, and gave some helpful pointers on how we can help restore some of our cybersecurity. For October we have two more great programs that you will enjoy. These programs are put on for your benefit and enjoyment and are significant only if you support them by making a commitment to attend. First, on October 15 we have Lawrence J. Korb, a prestigious speaker who is currently working at the Center for American Progress. He will speak on this timely topic as to why violence against women in the military is so grossly under-reported and what can be done to prevent it. Our second event is a fun community event to support the fight against breast cancer on October 26 in Alexandria. We will have our own table and t-shirts with the AAUW logo. If you wish to support this by walking, running or spending time at the table please contact Judy Titterton, [email protected]. Our success depends on each of the dedicated officers and Board members who volunteer tirelessly on your behalf and on each of you, the members, through your support and attendance at our programs. The Walk to Fight Breast Cancer, October 26 Judy Titterton The 2013 Alexandria Walk to Fight Breast Cancer will be held on October 26. All proceeds from the Walk benefit The Alexandria Breast Cancer Walk Fund for Early Detection and Education at Inova Alexandria Hospital, which provides mammograms to uninsured women and men or to those in financial need. Since the Walk's inception in 1994, over 7,000 women have been helped due to the generous support of sponsors, walkers and their pledges. Nearly 1,000 people participated at last year’s Walk, and over $100,000 was raised to help provide Alexandria's women with the best medical care available. I have participated in some capacity in The Walk since 1999. Danielle Beach has generously sponsored a Table for the Alexandria Branch at The Walk; the Table announces our presence in the community and it provides us with a golden opportunity to gain new members. I am seeking a Table Diva for this event. The Table Diva will bring the table materials to the Table at the event, host the table and market our Branch, and will ensure the table materials are cleared off at the end of the event. The Table Diva can be multiplied into Table Divas. Table materials will include items such as our membership brochure, candies, and possibly water bottles – the table materials will be decided on in the upcoming weeks. Table Divas should show up by 7:00 AM and can leave after The Walk begins around 8:30 AM. This exceptional individual (these exceptional individuals) should contact me right away at 703-795-2882, [email protected]. Walkers can register at http://alexandriava.gov/TheWalk. Be sure to add our team name (AAUW) to your registration form. The distance you walk is up to you; 3 miles or 30 feet; the Walk route is flat and smooth. Walkers will meet at the Table by 8:00 AM (earlier if you are a Table Diva Walker); we’ll listen to the speeches, participate in the warm up exercises, then start walking at the word, “GO”. Armchair Walkers can make a monetary donation pledge. Mail your check made payable to IAHF/Walk Fund to: Judy Titterton, 6223 Park Terrace, Alexandria, VA 22310. Please send pledges no later than October 20! The new location for this year’s Walk is the Patent and Trademark Office. More information will be provided on this location in the upcoming weeks. This year’s Walk is dedicated to our past president, Peggy Gross, who passed away in March 2013. Judy Titterton participated in "The Walk to Fight Breast Cancer" in Alexandria on Saturday, October 20, 2012 Dine Out for The Walk to Fight Breast Cancer, October 15 Judy Titterton Restaurants, retail stores, spas, and many other businesses throughout Alexandria contribute a portion of their proceeds throughout the day to the Walk to Fight Breast Cancer. All money raised through this event supports Alexandria's Breast Cancer Funds at Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation.

Beware of ………… just beware! Greg Carpenter presented a captivating program on September 28 to members and guests about how we can best deal with privacy and security on our computers, smartphones and online accounts. There is a fallacy of security in our infrastructure which is an opportunity for hackers. There are good and bad hackers – some do it for fun, just to see if they can. Others do it for malicious purposes. Some points Greg made: • Pay attention to all your accounts – credit cards, bank

accounts, etc. • Use an anti-virus program on your computers –

Symantec/Norton, McAfee, or low-cost Avast were suggested

• Microsoft Internet Explorer is most vulnerable, more for its large market share; Apple, Firefox, etc., are less so but only because they have a much smaller market presence

• Do not use public WIFI sites if you can avoid it for email, banking, shopping, etc. • Move unwanted/unsolicited email to SPAM folder; internet provider will screen it out in 30 days.

Successful Meet and Greet Caroline Pickens [AAUW VA President and member of the McLean branch], Joan Smith, Judy Titterton and Ruth Bennett socializing at a recent Meet and Greet get together to start the 2013-2014 year that was held at the home of our new Co-President, Danielle Beach. AAUW Public Policy and LAF Initiatives by Rance Willis

AAUW has a New LAF Program Manager Mollie Lam, the new LAF Program Manager, is an attorney with a background in advocacy for women and experience in the federal appellate system.

LAF Case Support Travel Grant Available These grants connect AAUW members with current or former LAF plaintiffs who share their stories at AAUW events, in local communities and at state conventions. Grant applications are due October 15.

Supreme Court Rules on Employees Rights The U.S. Supreme Court released many important decisions in its most recent term and two of those decisions will negatively affect the rights of Americans in the workplace. In Vance v. Ball State University, the court made it easier for employers to escape liability for discrimination and harassment in the workplace. The court limited the definition of “supervisor” to include only those employees with the power to take tangible employment actions, such as hiring or firing, against the complainant. This decision means workers will now have a much harder time proving workplace harassment and discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. AAUW opposes limits on a worker’s ability to seek remedies for harassment and discrimination, and we are working with Congress to address this issue through legislation. In another case, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center v. Nassar, the court ruled that one of Title VII’s protections for claims of discrimination, based on sex, race, or religion did not apply to retaliation claims. The court now holds retaliation claims to a higher standard of proof than it does status-based discrimination claims. Under this ruling, plaintiffs alleging retaliation must meet stricter requirements in order to prove their case. AAUW is working with Congress to restore this worker protection.

Know Your Rights in the Workplace The LAF’s new Know Your Rights in the Workplace makes it easy to learn more about protections against pregnancy, discrimination, sexist practices, wage inequity and other issues.

AUW Members Contact Members of Congress During the week of September 20 a record number of AAUW members and supporters used the Two-Minute Activist tool to tell Congress to do its job and pass a budget, and Congress sort of listened. House Republicans leaders announced that the House would remain in session through the end of the month, instead of skipping town for another break the week of September 23-27. They said they planned to use the time to work on a budget. So, keep the heat on your MOC {member of Congress} Keep writing your senators and representative encouraging them to pass a budget that protects women and families.

New Adelante Book Selections Join the Adelante Book of the Month Club. AAUW has established a list of diverse and fascinating books for you. Check out the 2013-14 list on the AAUW website. You can get a 30% discount at Feminist Press.

Grad School or Community Project Funding AAUW will be awarding $3.7 million in fellowships for graduate studies, and grants for grassroots projects this year. Applications, deadlines and eligibility information are now online for 2014-15 and new recruitment brochures are available on ShopAAUW.

Census Bureau’s New Data on the Gender Wage Gap The data shows that the gender wage gap remains stagnant at 23 cents, and the gap for women of color is even wider. These numbers have remained largely unchanged for the past decade. If the pace of change continues, the gender wage gap will not close until 2058. In Virginia the median income for men was $52,125 and women $41,104 for an earning ratio of 79%. In the 8th District, the median for men was $71,738 and for women $60,088 making the 8th District the highest ranking incomes in Virginia.

New Members We have been fortunate to gain 6 new members for the 2013-2014 year. Each has a wonderful background and current interests. Please meet the four most recent members here. Come to an event to meet them in person! Meet Geri Tucker More than three decades ago, I moved to Virginia to join USA TODAY—shortly after the launch of the national newspaper. It was an exciting, heady time to be part of a great experiment in journalism and part of the Washington scene. I worked in a number of editing roles at the media company, most recently as deputy managing editor for business. I retired from USA TODAY this spring and am excited about my career 2.0. I’m a Cincinnati native and still relish my Ohio connections. I am a member of the board of trustees of Kenyon College, my alma mater, and also serve on its information resources and diversity committees. Kenyon holds a special place in my heart and I’ve sponsored interns, served on reunion committees and attended other alumni activities in the years since graduation. Music and books are two of my great passions. I’m a fan of the Jack Reacher novels by author Lee Child. I play clarinet in my church orchestra, sing in the choir and have made the annual Messiah Sing-Along at the Kennedy Center a treasured tradition. But I also love the theater and have traveled to several countries including Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ethiopia, Senegal, England and France. In my spare time, I write the Asperger Ascent blog. And I’m currently working on a number of other writing projects. I reside in Springfield, Virginia, with my husband, Michael, who is a speechwriter and multimedia producer.

Meet Arlene Shapiro AAUW Alexandria Branch Welcomes Arlene Shapiro – ([email protected] ) I was a New York City high school history teacher. When I retired four years ago, my husband and I moved to Virginia to be with our family. This has given us the opportunity to be with our grandchildren. I have tried to take advantage of activities in the DC area. I have learned to play golf and belong to a ladies’ golf league. I have taken courses at George Mason University in English literature, Japanese literature and history. I enjoy the theater and have found many wonderful productions in the area. I like to relax with a good mystery or do needlepoint. I lived in Brussels, Belgium for five years. Since Brussels is centrally located, I was fortunate to be able to travel around Europe. Since that time I have traveled to many places outside of Europe. I was able to go on trips sponsored for teachers to China and Japan. A highlight of my trip to Japan was living with a Japanese family. I am looking forward to traveling to Iceland next summer.

Meet Laura Ferraro Originally from the NYC suburbs, I graduated from the University at Albany (upstate NY) in 1969, then moved to Boston for a few years working as an administrative assistant and an ESL tutor. NYC pulled me back to work there at Random House publishing, mostly on sports books for young readers' books (the 70s, a much easier decade work-wise!) with great colleagues and authors. I eventually moved to the DC area. I enjoyed living in N.W. DC but married a totally suburban man and settled in Alexandria in 1982. Before retiring three years ago from USDA as an office manager for the Nutrition branch I also worked for AARP for 21 years as a secretary/exec, PR assistant, and conference planner. Now retired, I enjoy taking courses at NOVA (free for seniors!), art and music, our dog, and some travel. I try to be outdoors often for nature walks, keep up good nutrition, and maintain a positive, young outlook. I truly

love being near DC and intend to do as much as possible exploring new venues there and around VA. ([email protected])

Meet Gail Kalin, PhD I am a graduate of Brown University (1978) and Yeshiva University School of Professional Psychology. I am a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Washington DC and Virginia (gailkalinphd.com). In my practice I work with client analysis and hypnosis, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy to create positive changes and to resolve old traumas. I also mentor GW University medical students. I am an animal lover and am the proud mother of an African gray parrot and 3 cockatiels.
