Help for children with ADHD through Rhythmic Movement Training

By teaching children movements that are rhythmic, the brain and muscles are trained to become skilful, which leads them to be able to master ‘stillness’. Rhythmic Movement Training +Brain Gym, can also help other conditions that maybe caused by retained reflexes, such as startling easily, walking on toes, pigeon feet, eye sight problems, balance problems.

After 19 years, you would think that local resident Betty Preston would be a bit fatigued trying to have a Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre (SPAC) built in Rosebud.

Not a bit of it! Betty has fired up again with an ener-getic group of supporters behind her, wearing towels at Council Meetings, writ-ing letters to the editors of local newspapers, all keen to have the SPAC.

The group comprises peo-ple from all over the south-ern Peninsula, from Droma-na, McCrae, Rosebud, Capel Sound, Tootgarook, Rye, Blairgowrie, Sorrento and Portsea.

Betty volunteered for over 20 years helping people with hydrotherapy for their arthritis, disabilities or inju-ries. At first this was in the now-defunct Balaka Street pool, then for many years

Betty would bus people over to Pelican Park in Has-tings.

A few years ago, at the age of 80 years young, Betty was ‘retired’, but she continues to lobby for a SPAC, not only for the need that she could see, but for all the community –

locals and tourists. Another vital need for a

SPAC is for our kids to be safe around water. It is now State Government policy that Primary School kids acquire basic water safety skills.

One example of this need was the recent attempts by

one primary school to have water safety lessons in the bay. The program had to be shortened due to poor water quality or poor weather.

Want to be involved, con-tact: Betty Preston—5986 4865 Email: [email protected].

In response to the work underway by the Southern Peninsula Aquatic Centre group, Mornington Penin-sula Shire Council has indicated that it is a priority to consider the options available for an aquatic centre in Rosebud.

The community’s interest in having an aquatic centre in Rosebud was one of the main topics to emerge from the recent Y our Peninsula 2021 consultation project.

The new Council has indicated it will consider the options available for an

aquatic centre in Rosebud and recently received a briefing on the work under-taken on this project previ-ously.

Following on-going con-sultation between officers and the Council in the com-ing weeks, more details will

be released to the commu-nity.

We will continue to keep our readers informed of progress.

Did you know Mornington Peninsula Shire Council’s proposed 2017-21 Council Plan is on public exhibition?

What is the Council Plan? It is a proposed plan providing a blueprint for how council will work towards achieving its strategic objectives.

The Proposed Council Plan sets out the vision, mission and the related

strategic objectives we will achieve with the Mornington Peninsula community over the next four years.

The plan’s objectives are to support our key themes. These themes revolve around things you experience every day when at the peninsula, including:

Our Place: coastline, land, Green Wedge, native plants and vegetation, our

44 towns and villages. Our Connectivity: road

network, reducing accidents on our roads, public transport, footpaths.

Our Prosperity: local economy, local businesses, employment, tourism, agriculture.

Our Wellbeing: ar ts and culture, active ageing, population, demographics.

This is a great opportunity to let us know your

thoughts on aspects of the peninsula you would like to see improved.

Any person may make a written submission on the proposed Council Plan. Written submissions should be submitted online through Council’s website mornpen.vic.gov.au/councilplan.

Residents who visit Capel Sound’s Vern Wright Re-serve are appreciative for the installation of new pub-lic toilets.

The $135,000 toilet instal-lation was completed in 2016 and features fully wheelchair accessible cubi-cles and baby change tables, robust stainless steel fix-tures and water efficient appliances.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Cr. Bev Co-lomb said “this installation was part of the upgrade to our public toilet facilities across the peninsula. We are glad to hear locals are bene-fiting from these new amen-ities”.

Seawinds Ward Council-lor Antonella Celi said “the

toilets at Vern Wright Re-serve were an initiative put forward by the Rosebud West Action Group as part of a local project for the community renewal pro-gram to enhance amenity at the reserve. With the toilet amenity complete, more users can now enjoy the benefits of an active life-style at the reserve”.

Seawinds Ward Council-lor Frank Martin added “the toilets were installed close to the playground, BBQ zone and off leash area to support families enjoying the reserve and making their day out a lot easier”.

Fellow Seawinds Ward

Councillor Simon Brooks concluded “the amenities

were delivered as part of Council’s Public Toilet Strategy implementation plan that aims to ensure our

public facilities meet the community’s needs”.

“I need you to pray for my hearing,” said Bruce.

A safe community Rosebud Country Fire

Authority (CFA) has been fitted with the CFA’s and Ambulance Victoria’s latest technology called ‘Emergency Medical Response’ (EMR) designed to improve the survival of cardiac arrest.

EMR is a state government funded program which will be carried out over the next three years across all of the CFA’s integrated brigades.

So far, the program has allowed 16 integrated brigades and three volunteer brigades across the state to have EMR capabilities.

To date, Rosebud CFA crews have responded to over 50 EMR events in the Rosebud area.

This innovative technology will now allow Rosebud Fire Station to be equipped to co-respond with Ambulance Victoria to medical emergencies to help treat unconscious, non-

breathing and pulseless patients.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said “The Rosebud CFA brigade have always done a fantastic job serving the community. With this new technology, the firefighters will be able to exceed even further”.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Simon Brooks said “as a past CFA volunteer I recognise and acknowledge all Rosebud Fire brigade members for their service and dedication to keeping the community safe”.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Antonella Celi added “our local firefighters do an outstanding job protecting our local community and I am excited that the Rosebud Fire Brigade has received new equipment to help them along the way”.

Fellow Seawinds Ward

Councillor Frank Martin concluded “emergency services play a vital role in keeping the community safe and this new technology will make sure they have the equipment they need”.

Country Fire Authority reminds people that firefighters take on many and varied roles.

If a Firefighter arrives at your door for a life-threatening medical emergency do not turn them away – every second counts in emergencies.

Firefighters will begin medical care until Ambulance crews arrive and then work with Ambulance where required.

Mornington Peninsula Shire to become Australia's safest and most

liveable municipality Victoria’s key road safety

agencies support Mornington Peninsula Shire’s “Towards Zero Municipality’initiative.

Victoria’s Police Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing Doug Fryer, and Bryan Sherritt Director of the new Safe System Infrastructure Program team formed from the Transport Accident Commission and VicRoads, praised Mornington Peninsula Shire for their leadership in road safety at a recent council meeting.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said an important part of the Shire’s responsibility as a road authority is to provide a safe road network.

“We are glad to be working in collaboration with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), VicRoads and Victoria Police on the Towards Zero initiative to reduce road trauma on the Peninsula.

“So far in 2017 we are extremely happy to say there have been zero fatalities on our roads.”

“We will continually advocate to the state

government to help improve our roads to ensure our community members and tourists have safe and relaxed driving experience when driving around the peninsula.

“Of course, I strongly encourage visitors who haven’t been here before to leave that little bit early to take the scenic route around the peninsula so you can truly appreciate our beautiful landscapes and coastline,” said Councillor Colomb.

Bruce Corben, from Corben Consulting – road safety specialists, will be heading to the 9th International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety Committee held in Banff, Alberta, Canada this August.

At the conference he will be taking the Mornington Peninsula’s Towards Zero initiative to a global audience by speaking about the goals and objectives of this great local initiative.

Being a Towards Zero municipality, the Shire aims to create a safe system including safer roads and roadsides, safer speeds, safer vehicles and safer

road use. Since becoming a

Towards Zero Municipality in April 2016, numerous proposals have been developed to reduce road trauma on the Shire’s roads including:

Introducing traffic-calming measures in local streets

Speed management in areas with high volumes of cyclists and pedestrians

Treating high risk local

rural roads and intersections Ensuring the vehicles in

their fleets carry five-star safety ratings

Promoting the goals of Towards Zero in their communications to residents

Applying for grants to the State Government’s Safe System Infrastructure Program to implement safe system treatments

Theodora House Cheerful Givers Group

Mornington Peninsula Shire, in partnership with George Hicks Foundation, is delighted to have pro-vided funding to Theodora House Cheerful Givers group to help them contin-ue to provide a valuable community service.

Seventy two year old Gina Poulos is the founder of the Theodora House Cheerful Givers program which provides food ham-pers and aid to people in emergency situations

Assisted by her 74 year

old husband and 97 year old mother, Gina prepares 300 meals and 100 frozen food parcels each week for disadvantaged people living across the southern townships.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said “when Gina contacted the Shire in late-February to notify us that the fridges and freezers had broken down due to the hot weather, we were determined to help”.

“The Shire is privileged

The last area discussed was crown portion 18, Wannaeue, bounded by the beach road, Adams Avenue, Eastbourne and Jetty Rds. Portion 17, between Jetty Rd and the line of Norm Clark Walk (named after a stalwart collector for charity honoured with a wooden statue) happened to be opposite the middle of the Rosebud Fishing Village and as a result was the first part of the parish to be successfully subdivided into small building blocks.

By 1879, the developer, "Woolcote" was assessed on ?? acres, Wannaeue, net annual value 12 pounds. Crown allotment 17 consisted of 129 acres 2 roods and 28 perches and the subdivision seems to have been declared in about 1877. The only known purchaser of land in 1879

was George Peatey who had bought lot 76 in 1878 but didn't occupy it until ten years later when he had repaid Nelson Rudduck's loan.

Woolcott had probably bought the property soon after this advertisement was placed. The owner would have been one of the grantees, Glover or Wallace, who had bought out his partner. Nobody had heard of Rosebud (the fishing village), thus the mention of Dromana, which had a pier. The lack of buildings, fencing etc. shows what the owner really thought of the land. There were certainly springs and the Rosebud Lagoon remained a feature of the area for many decades until it was drained for the construction of Spray St. The land boom was at its peak by 1888.

THIS DAY DROMANA. Large Bay Frontage. To Parties Looking for an

Unrivalled Site for a Marine Residence or Farm.

CJ. and T. HAM have received instructions from Mr. J. T. M'Kean, agent for owner, to sell by public auction, at their rooms, on Thursday, 13th inst., at twelvo o'clock, All that piece of land being lot 17 in parish of Wannaeue, near to village reserve of Dromana, containing 130 acres, well and permanently watered by springs, and having large Bay frontage. (P.4, The Age, 11-1-1876.)

The land boom was at its height by 1888 and no doubt blocks on the bay frontage had sold well.

My best ideas and inspiration come to me when I’m either walking the dog, or in the shower! Both places where there's no housework, no technology, no kids (my kids are past the age of wandering into the bathroom to talk to me while I shower), and none of the million other things that take up space in my head during the rest of the day.

The things that come to me in these moments of quietness are very varied in nature! It could be something for the kids, something for my business, something for my husband’s business, something for

myself or something for a friend….

Here’s just some of the things that came to me on this morning’s walk….

A great idea for a recipe

A way to organise the subs for my son’s indoor soccer final so that it’s fair on all the kids

An idea for reorganising my dispensary

A missing piece of the puzzle with a tricky patient case I’ve been trying to crack

A party idea for my almost 12 year old

…..and the words for this blog!

I know that some of you may think that I’ve defeated the purpose of all this quiet time by filling my mind

with so many things, but that’s how my mind works. Genuine actual stillness of my mind is very hard to achieve!

To all the beautiful practitioners at my clinic who have tirelessly tried to get me into meditation classes, I sincerely apologise. I promise it is something I am working towards, and I know that learning to meditate would allow me many more opportunities for a quiet mind.... but for now I love how just removing distraction from my life can give me clarity on so many things.

My next step.......get my kids to learn to appreciate a quiet mind as well. Hopefully inspiration on how to do that strikes me on my next walk!!!

ORIGINS OF STREET NAMES NEAR ROSEBUD by Ray Gibb (Continued from Page 11)

Louis Anderson, post-master, would soon build a store which was later occu-pied by Rosebud's first post-master UNDER COM-MONWEALTH CON-TROL, John Roberts. How-ever not all remaining blocks were sold in 1888 and the 1890's depression was soon to hit. As a result, W.F.Vale was selling the remaining land (84 acres?) circa 1910.

ROSEBUD BAY.

That picturesque neigh-bourhood a little to the

south west of Dromana, on the main road to Sorrento. The remaining unsold lots in the estate of R. R. Wool-cott Esq., being part of por-tion 17, parish of Wannaeue, each lot having an area of 1.5 acres and upwards. A new jetty, state school and other improvements have recently been added to the attractions of this place, which must ultimately be-come one of the most popu-lar of our suburban watering places. Solicitor, J.S. Woocott Esq., Chancery Lane. (P.2, Argus, 1-2-

1888.)

STREET NAMES.

The streets were proba-bly named by Woolcott 1877-1890. The north-south streets and Seal St have names that could be found at any "watering spot" but Barry St and Gipps St were named after the judge who sentenced Ned Kelly to death and a Governor.

The Kelly saga took place at the time Woolcott's estate was being sold but Sir George Gipps left Australia

in 1846 when Richard Rob-ert Woolcott was about 10 years old. There was much to admire about Sir George after whom Gippsland was named. Had he been Rich-ard's boyhood hero?

Thre was no way that R.R.Woolcott would have bought c/a 17 Wannaeue for a residence. He had estab-lished "View Hill" at Yarra Glen in 1872 and lived there for decades before retiring to Malvern where he died, aged 68, in 1904.

At Seawinds Community Hub (11a Allambi Avenue, Rosebud West – opposite Eastbourne Primary School), a range of volun-teering opportunities are available that are flexible, worthwhile and can help you become part of the community. Seawinds CEO Heather Barton is keen to meet with interested people, and explore oppor-tunities that may suit your availability and lifestyle.

Please note that all volun-teers need to hold a valid Working with Children Check.

You have office experi-ence and skills to share? Come, share your skills with us – even if only occa-sionally!

Love working in a team to organise events? Sea-winds Community Hub is looking for volunteers to join a new ‘Events Team’ to provide a range of events for the local community over the next 12 months and beyond. These include the Annual Golf Day, Youth Art Competition, Rosebud West Neighbour Day, Mentor Breakfast - and some new special one-

off events. Good with children?

The Rosebud West Chil-dren’s Project is a ground-breaking approach which shows, through solid evi-dence gathered over 35 years, to really change peo-ple’s lives. ‘Talk’ is central to this approach, and so we are looking for adults to talk with pre-schoolers, read with them, and assist the teachers and educations in their work each day. Training is provided. Working with Children Check is necessary before starting.

Good with food? Our regular Wednesday Com-munity Lunches are very popular, and our Volunteer Manager Helen MacPher-son is keen to engage more people who can help in the preparation on Wednesday mornings.

Talents and skills that you would like to share with the community? We can help you to share your talents with others. Check us out on our website www.seawindscommunityhub.com.au

Feeling a bit ‘disconnected’? Want to meet new people?

Want to feel part of something worthwhile?

Rosebud Ripple hasn’t been around for a while? Unfortunately, lack of fi-nancial support meant that we were no longer able to produce this popular local community newspaper.

BUT – now - Rosebud Ripple has a New Editor! We are delighted to wel-come Bettyanne Foster as our new volunteer ‘Rosebud Ripple’ Editor. Bettyanne will be known to many of

you as the author of the re-cently released and highly successful Stories of Rose-bud West, which provides a snapshot of the early life and times of our local com-munity. Although a relative ‘newbie’, having only been living here for seven years, Bettyanne has involved her-self with the community. First with the Rosebud West Community Renewal pro-ject, Neighbour Day and now the Rosebud West Ac-

tion Group. Bettyanne’s offer to take up this role as a volunteer has made it possible for us to now bring Rosebud Ripple back to you, as a monthly community newspaper. A grant from Mornington Pen-insula Shire will cover the printing costs, and delivery will continue to be done by volunteers.

You can continue to con-tact the Editor on: [email protected].

We are sincerely grateful to Sarah Chen, our previous Editor, who earlier this year accepted a teaching position – having completed her qualifications, this is the next stage in her career jour-ney. We acknowledge the enormous contribution of time, talent and expertise that Sarah has given over the last three years, and wish her every success in her role. We certainly miss her at the Hub!
