Welcome from our Director Gene Heppard

Helping you achieve

your educational goals Hello. My name is Gene Heppard. I am

happy to serve at Phoenix College as

the Director of Disability Resources

Services and REACH/TRiO Programs.

I have been assisting first generation,

low-income students and students with

disabilities for the past eleven years.

I encourage all of our REACH/TRiO

students to take full advantage of the

many opportunities within our grant to

become life-long learners.

Our REACH/TRiO staff are committed

to providing accurate and helpful

information that supports the

educational, professional and social

goals for our students.

I look forward to assisting you with

Spring Semester Synopsis

Here’s a review of our last semester

REACH/TRiO students partici-

pated in an array of amazing

events this last semester! Work-

shop highlights included time

management and getting orga-

nized; Google Calendar and e-

mail; how to apply for and actu-

ally get scholarship money; the

value of a dollar and understand-

ing credit; résumé and job inter-

viewing skills; tips for using a

graphing calculator; and test

anxiety and preparing for finals.

We also featured stress manage-

ment and cultural sensitivity

workshops presented by PC's

wonderful Counseling depart-

ment.

Our Director, Gene Heppard,

hosted the popular monthly

“Director’s Chair” round table

with students to find out what's

hot...and what's

not. Students

were encour-

aged to bring

any question or

concern they

may have about

the our program

and/or Phoenix College. What

can we say? Gene rocks!

We also hopped in the PC vans

and traveled REACH/TRiO

style to Northern Arizona Uni-

versity in Flagstaff, University

of Arizona in Tucson, Grand

Canyon, and all ASU campuses:

Tempe, Polytechnic, West, and

Downtown. Students were pro-

vided with guided

tours and free lunch

on campus, to get a

“taste” of university

life!

The really big

events were The

Blue Man Group at

ASU Gammage, a day long visit

to the Desert Botanical Garden,

Spring Fling, and our Pre-Finals

power kits that included free

chair massages!

—Deeda Webster

The university tours

helped me imagine my-

self there. Trio tutoring

got me As in all my math

classes. Thanks, Trio!

New Programs for Fall Semester

For a listing of our upcoming events, see page 7

Staff members have been busy

this summer planning events for

the fall semester, including a

new feature called “Fieldwork

Exposure.” Based on our

students’ top areas of study —

healthcare, education, and

business — we will visit

workplaces related to those

fields. Be sure to check your

student email address for

updates.

We are also hosting two days of

REACH/TRiO Open House,

August 26th and 27th, so drop in

at your convenience to find out

about the new programs this

semester.

We are also introducing the

REACH/TRiO Punch Card.

Each time you attend one of our

events listed on our calendar or

one session of tutoring, studying,

or approved non-REACH/TRiO

activity, you will receive a

punch on your card. Greater

participation in our programs

and events will give you a better

advantage. Points = Punches =

Prizes!

Another new activity is “Make a

Difference Day.” We will join

in with Student Life and

Leadership in the largest

national day of community

service October 25th.

TEAM TRiO

Student Highlights Celebrating some our students’ accomplishments

Being a part of

REACH/TRiO

has been an

amazing

opportunity for

me. This

program has

provided

tutoring,

college visits,

and keeping

me up to date with scholarships. This

program is for students who are transferring

to a four year degree. REACH/TRiO

provides tours at each university, giving us

the chance to meet their advisors and

staying connected with counselors. The

REACH/TRiO department always shows

tremendous care and support to their

students. Reach was definitely a great

decision and I encourage other students to

become part of the REACH/TRiO family.

— Sabrina Vega

Family is one thing, but REACH/

TRiO is another. Ever since I have

been a part of REACH/TRiO, I have

exploited every opportunity they have

given! REACH/TRiO has several

amazing tools that can help any

student succeed, but one that really

caught my attention was the one-on-

one tutoring.

My math skills were mediocre before

I decided to get tutoring at REACH/

TRiO. The thing that makes REACH/

TRiO’s tutoring very distinguishable

is that the sense of intimidation is

eliminated. For those who know, math

tutors can be very intimidating and

short. However, in REACH/TRiO

they mold themselves to help the

students in any way that is most

convenient and comfortable for them.

I would encourage anyone who plans

to attend a four-year university to join

REACH/TRiO. Their impeccable

ability to help students succeed is only

rivaled by their unique, natural talent

of knowing how to have a good time!

— Daniel Váldez

Sarah Hernández won one of the

two coveted All-Arizona

Scholarships. She plans to use her

scholarship to attend the University

of Arizona starting in the Fall of

2014 to study pharmacy.

Sarah was the salutatorian at the PC

Commencement ceremony on May

9th and graduated with honors.

Gerraldine Tahere was admitted to

the prestigious Smith College in

Northampton, MA as an Ada

Comstock Scholar and will be

starting in the fall.

She was also the recipient of this

year’s URSA Student Leadership

award and will be graduated with

honors.

Two REACH/TRiO Students

Participate in LeaderShape

Phoenix College sent eight

student leaders, including

REACH/TRiO students Lirio

Orozco and Brenda Martin, to

the 10th Annual Leader-

Shape Institute this May.

The LeaderShape Institute is

the only student leadership

development program of its

kind in the country.

The Institute is a six-day, on-site

(ASU Polytechnic Campus/CGCC

Williams Campus), intensive leadership

training program for students. It is the only

opportunity of its kind in the nation to

provide this type of training for students for

this duration and on-site.

Those who attended the institute this

summer came back driven, motivated and

excited to bring the skills they gained at the

institute back to Phoenix College while

enhancing their educational, personal and

professional lives as well.

Student’s Photos Graces Cover of Magazine

REACH/TRiO student Tina Franco graduated this spring and

is on her way to the College of the Atlantic in Maine, where

she will major in Human Ecology. Tina received a full

scholarships to attend COA.

One of Tina’s photographs was selected for the cover of Green

Living magazine. According to the magazine, “Using

biomimicry, the University of Arizona Health Sciences

Building was designed with an exterior cladding skin inspired by the rib folds of the

cactus to increase energy efficiency.” Tina’s photo beautifully captures this interplay.

The cover of the August Green Living also features another

of Tina’s photographs, as well as a two-page spread.

Recently, two of her wrestling photos were selected to

appear in Turnbuckle Magazine.

Last semester, Tina served as Sustainability Clerk in the

Bio Sciences department and wrote a 10-month education

campaign about sustainability, researched how to get the

campus more involved in green initiatives, and participated

on the PC Green Committee. The campaign will begin

August 2014 and end May 2015, with one topic being

discussed each month.
